  • Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episode 21 Subbed (Finalized)

The One Where the Thing Gets Stopped

To decide the Academia’s delegate for the Academy Face-Off Duel, a duel occurs between Judai and Misawa.  Misawa prepares his seventh deck–based on detailed calculations–in order to thwart Judai.  While scuffling with Misawa’s Water Dragon, Judai faces him with his E-Heroes, but he plays right into Misawa’s strategy.  Elsewhere, a man out to get rich quick by making a scoop out of the academy’s mysteries is lurking about when he comes into contact with Judai.

Episode 21! This was a fun one; this duel’s one of my favorites because of Judai and Misawa’s early rivalry, and it’s a shame it went the way it did.  It was actually pretty clever of Misawa to use Cursed Seal to stop Fusion, and like Misawa points out, Judai’s easy to beat if you strip him of being able to fuse, lol.  Kunisaki’s also interesting–seems his character could be a bit like Koyou in the manga from how he apparently used E-Heroes in that flashback where he loses to Kaiba, except for the lack of connection to Judai.  We’ll see a bit more about him next episode, but it’s also nice that he let us get a nice moment of Hayato showing his development so far.

Also, I’m using Tune.pk because Cloudy keeps giving me issues, and Dailymotion password-protected vids don’t seem to work anymore.  Lemme know of any issues!

And, of course, this episode also saw a few more fixes! Ten all together; all but one involved cards, and some of those were fun to try and do given the ghosting on some frames, lol.  All listed below the cut, if you’re interested.  Enjoy! I’ll start work on 22 soon. :)

    FIXES!

    1. As Misawa’s draws for his first turn, there’s a quick 2-frame shot of his deck on his Disk that has it missing the detailed card backing.  I was originally going to just place the card back on there like I place the regular cards, but the curves on the top card was hard to work with.  So, I just drew it on in Photoshop! Drew the yellow border and the grey/black “hole”, then masked the deck holder over it, adding a slight shadow to it.
    2. In this same shot, Misawa summons his drawn card–Carboneddon–in Defense Mode, but places it on his Disk in Attack Mode.  Blanked the zone in Photoshop for the three frames needed, temporarily also blanking Misawa’s finger on the first to help the card placement, then placed the card in AfterEffects in Defense while masking Misawa’s finger back in over it.  Easiest one since after the third frame, it stays in place for the rest of the shot, lol.
    3. As Carboneddon’s summoned, it zooms out to show Misawa behind it, but the card’s nowhere to be seen on his Disk.  Just added it in AfterEffects, then zoomed out that zone accordingly in Vegas.
    4. Once Burstlady attacks Carboneddon, there’s a quick shot of her standing there admiring her work before it asplodes.  But she’s missing her strap and arm cuff.  As it’s a quick shot, it’s not too noticeable, but I did do a quick edit in Photoshop to add it on her, then masked it in in Vegas, adjusting for brightness as the first impact dimmed.
    5. When Misawa summons his first Hydrogeddon, he’s placing a yellow art-less Normal Monster on his Disk instead of an Effect Monster card.  Added the card in AE, then slow-zoomed it accordingly in the shot.
    6. A repeat of the above one, as the two Hydrogeddon Misawa has when he plays Living Fossil are shown as blank Normal Monsters.  Placed the cards in AfterEffects for the first frame (which was moved accordingly as the screen panned), then as ghosting frames happen, I did a bunch of keyframe and transparency work to make the placements look smooth.  Finally, once they were in their final positions, I zoomed them in accordingly as it zooms while Misawa explains it.
    7. As Misawa plays Bonding - H2O, it’s a rehash of the above fix (panning, ghosting, zooming, and everything), only adding Oxygeddon into the mix. heh The Bonding card is also kind of cut off just under its effect box, but with the lighting effects that happen that I’d find hard to replicate–on top of zooming it–I avoided replacing the card, lol.
    8. As his Hydros and Oxy mix, Misawa summons Water Dragon, but the image of him that shows up has him placing a Normal Monster on his Disk.  Replaced the card in AE, adjusting it as it zoomed out and masking Misawa’s fingers over it for most of the frames, making it just semi-transparent enough that the original card’s not visible, as well.  Lemme tell you, these last three were fun~
    9. This was actually the first one I did, since I needed it for 21′s “Thanks for Watching” clip.  As Judai’s fusing for Tempester, he’s holding two blank Normal Monsters and one blank Effect Monster in between–which should be Featherman, Bubbleman, and Fusion.  Added the cards in AE then scaled them accordingly as it zoomed out, lighting them up a bit for a few frames as the F/B cards that slide in start to glow, and then masking in Sparkman over them.  Once that was done, I took it into Vegas, where I moved the shot up as the split-screen slid that half upward.
    10. In the preview, we see Bubbleman destroying Mathematician, but the panning shot as he’s destroyed has Bubbleman on Judai’s Disk in Defense Mode; I blanked that zone in Photoshop, then added Bubbleman in Attack Mode in AE, then moved it accordingly in Vegas.  Whoo~

And from what I’ve seen already skimming through, there’s a bunch more for 22…
