The One Where They Go Down a Well
Manjoume’s brothers try to buy Duel Academia, and as a condition of their purchase, a duel between Manjoume Thunder and Manjoume’s brother Chousaku begins. Manjoume has a handicap imposed on him, making it so he can’t use Monsters with 500 or more ATK, and he somehow scrapes together wimpy Monsters to make a deck. All he can do is stall with his summoned Monsters in Defense Mode, while Chousaku wages an offensive with dragons in the 2500-ATK range. But when the Ojama Trio are all out together, it marks the beginning of Manjoume Thunder’s counterattack…
i feel like that’s an appropriate screengrab for this episode
Here’s episode 35! Gives us an interesting premise, forcing Manjoume–someone who’s relied on a power deck thus far–to battle with weak Monsters, as his brothers decide to cut the middle man and go right to a certain cocky rich guy to buy the Academia and rule the “card game world” (yes, that is an actual line; neat cameo tho). Also, the Ojama Trio is finally complete, and that helps Manjoume develop some more through this episode, trying to show his Brothers that he actually has grown.
Had a few card fixes and one typo fix to work in here, and I also recycled the translated “Go, Trio of Avid Bravery” shot of the three Manjoumes from episode 12 for the hardsub (thanks to @enbynoctis again for initially working the text in!); full list below the cut, as usual.
Enjoy, folks! Expect it on NAC by tomorrow. 36′ll get us into the third of our Seven Star encounters, and it’ll be an… interesting one.
Fixes!
- As Daitokuji goes to answer the phone in Samejima’s office, the words “MONITER ON SCREEN” appear on the phone, with the typo on “Monitor” included; just dumped the frame into Photoshop and duplicated the “O”, moving the text from the “r” onward over a tad to fit it, then threw the frame into the video in Sony Vegas, masking Daitokuji’s hand over it.
- As Manjoume summons Soul Tiger out, the card showing below it is reversed; I slapped a proxy on top of it in AfterEffects in one of the later frames, then zoomed it in as needed in Vegas for the zoom shot, masking the DEF counter over it as I did.
- A repeat of #2 as we have the rapid zoom-out after Emerald Dragon is summoned and Soul Tiger’s card is reversed; after slapping on the proxy and zooming it out as needed, I masked ED’s ATK counter over it as needed. Then, I also gave Shou lip flaps for his “ikinari” line, as he doesn’t move his mouth originally there, by rotating a frame of his opening mouth as he moves his head to fit where it should.
- As Chousaku summons Diamond Dragon, he has four Monster cards on his Disk: three Normals as he should, but one Effect Monster where King Dragoon should be, and it’s a Fusion Monster. I slapped the appropriate cards on each frame as needed in AfterEffects. Worth noting how the dub decided to handle this though, with both of King Dragoon’s Fusion Materials still there…
- A repeat of #4 as Chousaku goes on to attack with King Dragoon right after it.
- A repeat of #4 again as Chousaku attacks with King Dragoon again, but this time, there’s an… interesting gaffe the animators did where it looks like part of the Duel Disk from later in the shot is left there at the beginning? This would be a bit hard to clear up, but luckily, the dub did a decent job clearing it (except for putting an Effect Hyozanryu where King Dragun should be and Divine Dragon Ragnarok where Hyozanryu should be), so I just used the frames I needed there to cover it up with the whooshing background from it. Also, the cards’ art boxes are literally transparent and show the background, which gets fixed thanks to my proxies.
- After Chousaku sets Huge Dust Tornado, it zooms out as Manjoume draws, but we see Chousaku’s face-down HDT, and it’s… sideways. Not sure how they did that. And the dub actually kept it like that, too, and caught on his shoe, no less. I slapped a proxy the right way, facing Manjoume, and zoomed it out appropriately.
