The thing with GX is that all of the heartbreaking things that happen in Season 3 completely lose their impact without the the frame provided by the first two seasons. The show basically thrives on making the viewer like these ridiculous, dorky teenagers… and then breaking them mercilessly on-screen and off-screen.
This is doubly true for the protagonist. Judai’s character development in Season 3 hinges on his failings and shortcomings in the previous seasons, on everything coming to bite him in the ass all at once.
