juxtaposed with Yubel taunting Judai about how he’s capable of hurting Johan despite risking everything to protect him is one of my favorite little things in the anime

Judai is not hurting Johan despite risking everything, he’s willing to risk hurting him because he’s already risked and given up everything.

This scene makes quite clear what Yubel doesn’t understand about love: Judai isn’t willing to hurt Johan despite caring about him,

He loves Johan enough to risk it.

The fact that Judai doesn’t feel interested in dueling during the graduation duels until someone actively seeks him out is so telling

Duels are his favorite thing. This is the boy who got hyped up and excited for life-threatening duels with universal stakes. Not wanting to duel

He says he’s tired and wants to relax, which is… all just cover for his depression

He ends up dueling but even that he doesn’t do excitedly. He duels Sorano and is sure to keep up a smile but there’s something that isn’t there in a duel with a stranger that there is in say, his duel with Asuka

Just noticed this parallel between Playmaker’s duels against Earth and Go Onizuka! Each of his last two major wins came from reducing the ATK of his opponent’s ace monster to 0, and then attacking it.

Earth just had to see with his own eyes that Playmaker pulled that move off again!
