I have spent far too much time thinking about how that promo special could fit into canon to not type it up and throw it to the other 5Ds gremlins in the void that is tumblr dot com.
In case anyone seeing this isn’t aware, there was a 5Ds special released to promote Buster/Assault Mode cards. As such, it technically doesn’t fit into canon anywhere. But I made it fit. So there.
You can make it work if it’s set in the first couple of years after everyone leaves the city.
The twins are still very young, but you can argue they’re just late bloomers. They and Aki are back in the city while on holiday from school.
Crow is notably missing. Why? Had a tournament. Couldn’t get out of it. Sorry, guys, really wanted to be there, maybe next time…
Still using the original Speed World instead of Speed World 2? Nostalgia. No one uses the original anymore and they just wanted to. (I got nothin’ here, work with me, lol.)
Canon also supports this placement. In the future scenes, Jack states that he will not consider himself King of Riding Duels until he’s defeated Yusei. This was simply one of those (failed) attempts.
Yusei himself says that he’s staying so that everyone has a reason to come back. Well, everyone did come back then (at least once, though minus Crow).
At the start of the duel, Yusei says, “Sorry for making you wait.” This could easily imply that Jack has been trying to challenge him again for a while but it just hasn’t worked out because they are both very busy people.
Aki also notes at one point that Jack is much more motivated to win than Yusei is. Which absolutely tracks since Jack went pro and Yusei didn’t. There’s more incentive for Jack to win; Yusei is just there to enjoy himself.
Why would Jack challenge him again so soon after leaving? Easy: the whole point of the episode is that its a promo for New Shiny Cards. Problem is, Jack and Yusei are more alike than anyone likes to think, so while Jack thought he was probably getting a leg up over Yusei with Buster/Assault Mode, he didn’t consider that Yusei would also see new support for his deck. They both saw the new stuff and instantly went, “ooooh Shiny” and picked up some new cards.
This placement also explains, while this promo was actually released fairly early during the series’ run, why these cards don’t show up in any other episodes.
(If you’ve ever seen the promo, then you know this isn’t perfect, but also I Do Not Care, lol. This is where it fits. Fight me.)
god ok like. there are a Lot of issues with s2 of yugioh 5ds compared to s1 that you can discuss, especially wrt to the way s2 does feel like. an entirely separate show Often, the way it shifts away so drastically from the show’s early really engaging and insightful commentary about classism and on the whole the way the show’s two halves really struggle to mesh as one consistent work.
BUT! but!!!! i do think it’s super neat that over the course of the show 5D’s does hold on tight to a few long-spanning themes, like the power of the bonds we have with our loved ones (in true yugioh fashion, of course), and I’m especially entranced with the way the show really plays with the notion of “what does it mean to be a person? can anyone be considered more or less of a person due to circumstances outside their control?” Season 1 fleshes this out with the question of “Is a person from Satellite less than a person from New Domino City?” (of course not, but god if yusei jack and crow dont have to fight tooth and nail to make that clear), and then in Season 2 you see this explored through the lens of “Is an android or an android copy of someone less of a person than their original flesh and blood self, even if the copy has all their memories and emotions?” (yusei thinks not, but Z-ONE very much thinks so, and the tension of that dynamic RULES imo.) It’s just cool stuff!!! I love when yugioh presents different flavors of these heavy moral/philosophical questions, especially ones about identity (which is, at yugioh’s core, probably one of its biggest franchise themes overall.)

I headcanon that Every is the “good” of the Fortune Ladies because her design is slightly different from the rest. (The light background and white dress (is based on DS Carly’s dress btw).
So, I always imagined if Carly’s character was continued after the DS arc. Her new deck are mixes Fortune Lady and Fortune Fairy as a symbol of her devolopment. Although the Fortune Lady deck comes from Carly’s evil past, she doesn’t hate it at all and wants to use them to prove these cards can do good, too. And she also learns how to Duel so she can protect herself.
And Jack can also stop ignoring Carly (as a way to protect Carly - he said), instead, he can help her better in Dueling. This is truely the best way for Carly’s safety in the long run.
doing nothing but watch 10 hour games walkthroughs
Interestingly, in the first Yusei vs Ghost duel, Ghost is actually running a non-Speed Spell Reload (which I guess still works because technically Speed World 2 doesn’t outright ban regular spells, just imposes a 2000 LP penalty for them). That’s kind of interesting, implying that Ghost is perfectly willing to break the usual consensus/unspoken rule of only using Speed Spells (and to take a bunch of damage) just to make sure he gets his Wise Core combo
