An EVOLVING Duel! Stardust VS Red Daemon’s | Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s OVA Uncut “Dub” (WIP #1)
Whoops, meant to post this here a few days back 😅
Happy new year! Since it was just the Christmas/general holiday season here in the US, I figured I’d finally get around to throwing up a little preview of this thing I’ve slowly been working on. This is a very rough WIP, since I’m still working on compiling dialogue (which I’ve been doing through quite a lot of use of the UltimateVocalRemover AI tool to rip and isolate vocals from the dubbed episodes, and which I used for a near-perfect rip of the OVA’s music and SFX which prompted this idea in the first place–started this while I was bored waiting for my last hard drive to eventually fail any file recovery efforts back in October, and had finally gotten UVR working on my newly-reinstalled-with-Windows laptop, so I thought “…what if I did a thing”)–ergo, I haven’t done any volume-mixing or SFX touch-ups yet. This has also involved a lot of browsing through the dubbed episodes on Crunchyroll, then grabbing the audio in HQ to then run through UVR, lol.
As of now, I’ve done up to this part here after Shield Wing’s destroyed, using lines from the MC throughout the series for the beginning, and then assembling/stitching together what works for some move explanations or comments from Rua/Ruka/Aki in the stands, trying to stick to the original script as able (for example, Rua’s line about Shield Wing’s effect had to be stitched together, since annoyingly the only time someone non-Yusei describes it, it’s Crow during the WRGP arc), though I’m still trying to find a line that works for Aki’s “You’re being pretty loud yourself, Ruka” line earlier (as she’s complaining about Rua cheering loudly; I made Ruka say “It’s not that big of a deal” so I need a similar response lol).
And for Rua and Ruka, I’m focusing exclusively on Eileen Stevens’s performances for both as of episode 65 going into the WRGP arc and her Duel Links lines for them, as 1) there’s more to work with there, but also 2) it’s a smoother performance imo.
And some lines here could be subject to change if I find another one with a more fitting inflection or something. Also eventually want to do some on-screen text translations for things like the landmark pop-ups early on if I can–maybe even use English card proxies if able as I’ve seen some do, but we’ll see, lol.
Anyway yeah, hope this sounds interesting! I’m slowly working on this as I prioritize finalizing my GX subs so this’ll mostly be on the backburner, but wanted to throw this up as a rough preview of what it’s looking like!
It’s neat that this 5D’s Duel Chronicle event included this Nazca arc on a map, given how the dub left the corresponding episodes undubbed; lets us see how it would’ve probably been dubbed, and while most of the event text here is pretty accurate iirc (save for Jack’s “[Bommer]’s a fortuneteller, is he?” 4K/KCMism line early on), a few observations here:
It’ll be interesting when we get the next 5D’s Chronicle event that includes the Ark Cradle/Divine Temple events, since they still included Aporia saying “ThE tEmPlE iS gOnE aNd ThE cItY aNd ItS pEoPlE aRe SaFe” lol. I figure Duel Links was eventually going to have to give us stuff from what the dub didn’t get to; since we already have Judai/Yubel, it was at least a given we’d get GX S4 stuff too. But at least only GX and 5D’s have this unfinished-dub problem, to KCM’s credit.
5D’s Dub-Uncut Episode 29 WIP Clip #2 - The Rise of Foreshadowing
So, about ¾ths of the way through editing the episode, and I wanted to show off a bit more of what I’ve done so far–starting with the big “Road of the King/Atlas Rising” gala scenes. I translated the movie’s poster, using the dub’s version without the text for simplicity, and used the dub’s name for it as I worked it into the footage (I also did versions using “The Road of the King”, in case I ever, uh… need more to eventually do lol)–I first added the text in Photoshop and redid the zooming shots in the outdoor scene, then adapted the translation for use in the indoor shots.
For the audio, as I mentioned last video, I used some Duel Links lines for Carly over the poster shots since there was a dub commercial here, I used a Carly Duel Links line to make her line to Angela “No way! Angela!” instead of “Angela! Fancy seeing you here!”, and during the gala, I used the Japanese audio to take out the unneeded MC lines before Goodwin steps down the stairs, shortened his teasing lines about the movie, and used Duel Links lines so that Jack’s dialogue in the movie was actually consistent with what was said in those scenes originally in the Japanese version. (Also didn’t show it here, but I had to keep the reporters who react after Angela breaks that Jack’s a Satellite in Japanese, because of the way 4Kids decided to have the two that talk talk back and forth after each other instead of one having the most dialogue.) I also had to tweak Misty’s foreshadowing line to Carly because 4Kids gave her added lip flaps; I think it came out well, and works if I try to do a later scene for fun, lol.
Most of this sounds about final since I’ve tweaked the audio levels for this section already, but let me know what you think!
5D’s Dub-Uncut Episode 29 WIP Clip #1 - Yusei Makes Moves/Carly’s Fortune
So, work on dub-uncut!5D’s episode 29’s been coming along well, I’ve gotten the dialogue and music drafted, so now I’ve been going back and adjusting audio levels and adding back SFX; currently up to the commercial break on this front, and I figured now’s a good time to show it off a little bit. I haven’t shown off how I translated the Showcase/Noteworthy Cards segment at the beginning, so there’s that (and I managed to use some Duel Links lines for the twins to try and translate their original lines, recycling how I handled “check out the show for more!” in 27 [but I noticed after upload that Sony Vegas botched my mask for Rua on top of the English banner so some of the Japanese is visible… Will fix this before release]), and then I used some Duel Links lines to get Trudge’s dialogue in the cold open more accurate to the Japanese script and dial down the whole in-your-faceness of him working with Yusei rather than Yusei willingly letting Ushio take him to Godwin; as that was already established at the end of 28 since I couldn’t edit around it, thought I’d be able to do something here.
Also thought, since this is the last full episode I’ll be doing (for now), that I’d work in Mark de Groot’s awesome English Last Train - A New Morning cover, so there’s a preview of that, as well. Then there’s the Carly scene, which uses a pitched-up/sped-up version of Carly’s theme which took some playing around to get recreated just right; just need to grab the SFX that plays as Carly’s dejected over her fortune to get it sounding right. Also worked in some Duel Links lines to do a good translation of the line about Fortune Fairy Sui’s fortune, and had to work in some more to cover for the commercial break the dub has between Carly getting her second wind and the Road of the King/Atlas Rising red-carpet event (and I’ll also try to translate the poster for this).
5D’s Dub-Uncut Episode 26 Clip - VS [Elite 4?!] Jack
Just a random little edit I wanted to throw together; I’ve been rewatching Pokemon–well, Pocket Monsters since I’m doing so in Japanese now–and as I’m almost through Advanced Generation (Haruka’s off to the Kanto Grand Festival! also no huge VA scandal neat), I’d been wondering what 5D’s would be like with some of the OST, and I thought the Hoenn Elite 4 theme (a personal fave) would work really well with this part of the episode. Not making this a thing (…maybe), just wanted to have a little fun, but I do like how it ended up coming out since I also had to recreate the SFX for a few shots where I used the Japanese audio when editing the original dub-uncut episode with the Japanese soundtrack (and had to borrow the roar used for Red Daemon’s in the old 5D’s promo clip 4Kids made, along with a game SFX for Stardust’s roar I had handy [don’t mind how it kinda sounds inconsistent haha]).
It’s a shame Shinji Miyazaki didn’t work on an anime version of the Hoenn Gym Leader theme (apparently–or Emerald’s VS Frontier Brain theme, for that matter…), or I think that could’ve worked well too. (I may look into isolating the Japanese vocals sometime to do this with the Japanese version, lol.)
Keep an eye out for some 5D’s Dub-Uncut 29 clips coming soon as I get started on it!
“A Darkness Engulfing All - The Immortal Dark Signer”/”A Web of Deceit (Part 2)″
Everybody listen!
So, took a bit longer because IRL stuff/finalizing my GX 58 script and I got a bit ambitious (lol), but finally finished my dub-uncut take on 28, as Yusei closes out his duel with Dark-Signer!Dick Pitt! More details under the cut, while I’ll now get started on finalizing GX 59 to work on releasing 58 and 59 together before working on 5D’s 29.
In case this is the first you’re hearing about my mini-project here, let’s get you up to speed:
So, the official Spanish YGO channel on YouTube flubbed a few uploads of the 5D’s dub such that they ended up uploading a few episodes of the English dub instead of the Latin American dub (21-29)–but with none of 4Kids’s background music! Which meant that I could swoop in and re-insert the original Japanese soundtrack (which I did by matching each track to how it was looped in the episode), but I wanted to do more by also tweaking the dub itself so that not only was it matching the original footage, but the dialogue was more in line with the original dialogue timing-wise (since I couldn’t salvage much of what they changed). Hence, the “dubbed uncut” gimmick here. To this end, I’ve also used dialogue from Duel Links where applicable, or even borrowed audio from other episodes with the vocals isolated to lend to that effect.
Check out the masterpost of episodes I’ve done here!
5D’s Dub-Uncut Episode 21 WIP #4: Revenge
I’m almost done with the episode! Here’s another preview showing off my edits to this scene, but with a twist: I’ve always thought the original track playing here, “Rage” from 5D’s Sound Duel 2, sounded a lot like “Standstill,” one of the unreleased GX tracks. So I thought I’d mix it in to see how it’d look in the scene proper, and I think it did work pretty well! This won’t be in the final dub-uncut episode, this is just for a little fun!
Edit-wise, this one was a doozy–edited around all the talk of Greiger breaking into Goodwin’s office just before this starts to make it bear some resemblance to the original, and between recycling some of Greiger’s lines and reappropriating them in other spots, I think it came out decently enough! Also had Yusei call after him like he did originally as he rides up to try and stop him (dub!Yusei just shouts “No!” which is fine but to try and match the original and all~), and I got rid of Yusei’s extra line before Greiger screams at Goodwin by recycling some of Greiger’s grunting.
Thoughts? Stay tuned for a link to the full thing, as I give the episode some quality-checking now that I’ve pretty much finished it.
5D’s Dub-Uncut Episode 21 WIP #3: “Something I Must Do”
Here’s a third preview! Here, showing off the changes I made to this unfortunately rewritten scene to make it flow with the Japanese script. There’s not much I can do with the staff member so I opted to keep the idea that Greiger snuck in, but make it a lot more subtle and implied rather than having all the dialogue that makes it super obvious he did, but do note that this is actually his own contestant room he’s in, and the staff member was originally seeing if Bommer was ready to start his duel. I also kind of recycled some of Greiger’s whimpers to match where Bommer was doing so as he read the news about his village.
I ditched Greiger’s turn-starting “and you’re in my way” line for a recycled “It’s my turn!” so I could tweak the billboard SFX a little, then recycled his explanation for Chariot Pile from later and tweaked it to match where Bommer says Yusei can release his Monster to negate it, adjusting Yusei’s dialogue accordingly by recycling a later line. And his lines for Junk Warrior were taken from Duel Links; I may see if I can tweak some of them to recreate his original chant. And for some SFX tweaking, I replaced “Send his LP to the scrap heap” with a Duel Links “My Monster attacks you directly!”.
I had to snip this preview a little to get this under the time limit before it’d get blocked. Also I know it’s kinda noticeable when the JP audio is used, thanks to having to use the fan-recreated “Hopeless Battle” here; will see if I can make it less so.
Lemme know what you think!
5D’s Dub-Uncut Episode 21 WIP #1: Recap!
Getting to work on dub-uncut!21 for 5D’s!
In case you missed it, I started doing this with episode 23-26 (26 being my most recent one), and now I’m going back to do 21 and 22 before I do 27-29. But here, I had an interesting situation: a mostly-recap of episode 20, which wasn’t accidentally uploaded musicless. I looked into how to isolate vocals and came across PhonicMind.com, which I did a test on, and it actually removed the music really well! I prepared the recap audio I needed from episode 20, then saved it to a wav file that I uploaded there, and threw in the good results into Vegas.
I do need a good Greiger gasp I might get from 20 if the one I sampled in from later in 21 doesn’t sound quite good here, but we’ll see. Also had Japanese Max and Annie scream as the quality on their musicless scream in the dub was decent but couldn’t figure out how to place it behind Greiger’s thoughts… May revisit.
Stay tuned!
5D’s “Dub-Uncut” Episode 26 WIP #3: The King Strikes Back
Here’s another peek! I think I may have finalized how the sound here will be, but I’m sure I might end up tweaking it more as I look it over at the end. Really doesn’t help that Jack’s VA doesn’t sound as strong in certain parts in the original episode’s audio, which kinda makes his levels go all over the place… Had a few more Duel Links lines mixed in to get rid of the dumb trash-talk lines about Jack’s and Yusei’s time in the Satellite which was a bit improv’d; let me know if it sounds okay? Also got rid of Yusei’s “That was then and this is now!” line for a Duel Links “I activate my Continuous Trap” line; Duel Links’s really going to be a blessing~
Do let me know how you feel about the overall levels, too; I tried to match the volume of the BGM with how it seemed to be in the original, but sometimes the vocals ended up sounding lower so some had to be tweaked more in spots… It’s kind of annoying, actually. 😅
I’ve timed the music and lines up to about the People of the Stars bit, so once I finalize the mix pre-commercial break, I’ll draft things up some more.

Everybody, listen!
So, this was something I started a few weeks ago–the official Spanish YGO channel on YouTube flubbed a few uploads of the 5D’s dub such that they ended up uploading a few episodes of the English dub instead of the Latin American dub (21-29)–but with none of 4Kids’s background music! Which meant that I could swoop in and re-insert the original Japanese soundtrack (which I did by matching each track to how it was looped in the episode), but I wanted to do more by also tweaking the dub itself so that not only was it matching the original footage, but the dialogue was more in line with the original dialogue timing-wise (since I couldn’t totally salvage what they changed for no raisin). Hence, the “dubbed uncut” gimmick here. And Duel Links giving us 5D’s World also helped a lot, as it gave us the English VAs performing lines right from the Japanese version, which I did my best to squeeze in, along with some summon chants from later on. It was fun working on this!
Along with the more accurately-paced dialogue, I’ve also translated the OP/EN, the title cards, and previews (where I also threw in the corresponding lines to the Japanese preview from the next episode, if able) to give this an actual “What if they actually did this uncut” feel. Episode 29 also features the awesome English cover of Last Train - A New Morning that Mark de Groot did to that end, but the release I’ll post on NAC will have it as an optional audio track. I go into more of the specifics with each episode’s own release post, so check out the tag here to see what I’ve done with them! If you’re curious about how they look/sound as I edit everything, check out the work-in-progress videos I’ve done here.
Anywho, check ‘em out below! And always check this post in case any of the links break!
Current Update (2/22/21): I went back to all but episode 22 and finalized these episodes to make some things consistent across all of them and reduce some of the hardsubs I included in some episodes that I may have gone a bit overboard with–but this mini-project is officially done!
Previous Update (2/18/21): After starting with 23-26, going back to do 21-22 and redo 23-26, after over 2.5 years (somehow), episodes 21-29 are all done! 🎉 Unless 4K/Konami Cross Media decide to flub up more episodes somehow, I won’t be doing more full episodes, but you can keep an eye on my WIP-video tag or my YouTube channel for the occasional clips I might do~
21. Second Round Showdown – Part 2 (A Vengeful Bommer – The Sorrowful Trap, Chariot Pile)
22. The Profiler (A Disclosed Past! The Duel Profiler VS the Black Rose Witch)
23. Duel of the Dragons – Part 1 (The Final Match – A Heart Hidden Behind the Mask)
25. The Fortune Cup Finale – Part 1 (The Fortune Cup Finale! The Lone King Jack Atlas)
26.The Fortune Cup Finale – Part 2 (The Fate of the Signers! A Future Shown by the Crimson Dragon)
27. A Web of Deceit – Part 1 (A World Without Light – The Dark Synchro Frozen Fitzgerald!)
28. A Web of Deceit – Part 2 (A Darkness Engulfing All – The Immortal Dark Signer)
29. Good Cop, Bad Cop (A Looming Threat! The Dark Signer Ushio?!)
Bet you thought you’d seen the last of these… 😛
I realized I’ve been neglecting my sub/dub comparison site for too long (IT’S ALMOST BEEN A YEAR WHAT), so as I went back to finally update the images for episodes 1 and 2, I thought I’d finally re-publish my 22 comparison; I’d held onto it for a little while at first because I wanted to rewatch it to add a Final Thoughts bit for consistency with the rest, but then eventually forgot as things came up, lmao. So here, just have it and read up on how irked I was with the changes episode 22 got and having to hear Akiza’s whole “Sorry, but you brought this upon yourself!!” cringe bit…
I’ll still be looking into volunteering a bit going into November, and I’ll still be finalizing GX (getting 41 going now!) and doing those 5D’s dub-uncuts (I can’t wait to use this new Duel Links audio ahhhh), so my time still might be a bit constrained, but I do want to at least knock out the Fortune Cup by the end of the year. Also might need a new webhost; I was paying a decent bit on Bluehost but then I let it expire accidentally and had to renew it by paying $54 for three months or something… a month or two ago? Yeah, might be a bit pricy…
Stay tuned!
“The Fortune Cup Finale! The Lone King, JACK ATLAS”/”The Fortune Cup Finale (Part 1)″
Everybody, listen!
Here’s the newest installment of this short Dub-Uncut series! (Check out a quick preview here of the final thing~)
So, to catch people up, the official Spanish YGO channel on YouTube flubbed a few uploads of the 5D’s dub such that they ended up uploading a few episodes of the English dub instead of the Latin American dub (22-27)–but with none of 4Kids’s background music! Which meant that I could swoop in and re-insert the original Japanese soundtrack (which I did by matching each track to how it was looped in the episode), but I wanted to do more by also tweaking the dub itself so that not only was it matching the original footage, but the dialogue was more in line with the original dialogue timing-wise (since I couldn’t salvage what they changed). Hence, the “dubbed uncut” gimmick here.
This one was actually kind of pleasant to go through; 4Kids gave it a decent dub, at least if you remove all the fluff like I did! Jack/Yusei’s backstory being mostly faithfully translated helped, and the lack of any overdone trash-talk during the duel was nice. Applying the normalizing effect to the audio that I realized I could do as I finished editing 24 did help the quality overall, too.
So, to give a quick rundown, I removed the MC’s unneeded lines over Aki leaving with Divine (I left in the Japanese audio for a second later, so there’s a hint of Japanese Yusei, but he sounds almost like dub!Yusei in that scene, so it’s hardly noticeable if you haven’t rewatched this episode hundreds of time like me lmao), Rex gets to sound a bit less cheesy (”and UNITE YOU ALL” is gone before the OP, for example), I added a dub!Jack grunt from one of the BGM-less episodes so I’d get to keep in the COCKROACH STOMP, Lazar’s a bit less snotty as he makes his debut, JACK loses his unneeded monologue as he rides away with Yusei’s D-Wheel, I timed dialogue overall to sort of overlap more with the Japanese audio (like for Yusei’s thoughts pre-duel), I recycled a line or two from dub!24′s BGM-less audio to undo some of the trash-talking (like “It’s my turn!” from Yusei; likewise, we’re still undoing Let’s Rev It Up as I use my now-stock “I Synchro-Summon/Junk Warrior” clips), and… yeah, I think that covers it all. Oh, for the preview, since JP!Yusei is using his Stardust chant and I can’t use the dub equivalent from Season 3, I used the clip of Yusei near the end of 26 as he’s about to attack with Stardust. And I used an MC line from 26′s start that I’ll be editing out anyway over where Yusei reads the title.
(UPDATE [6/28/20]: As I’ve been revising my older releases after working on 21-24, I just briefly revised my crack at 25 to match how I’ve been handling those and updated the above link accordingly. Luckily, I was already pretty satisfied with how it came out originally, but I still did a few minor tweaks, like in line timing to make sure some of the dialogue didn’t look too out of sync with the lip-flaps, as well as splicing in/tweaking Duel Links lines so I could add in JACK’s chant for Red Daemon’s [which for some reason still doesn’t match the translation Yusei has for it in DL…], as well as Yusei’s Junk Warrior chant from later on which I previously added to 21 [you can see these in action here]. I also added his Stardust chant back into the preview and spliced a “Let’s go, Stardust!” to match the Japanese script. Sounds very nice.)
I ended up vocal-removing the DVD audio clip of the Speed World remix that’s played here to work with, which helped since it retained the background D-Wheel whirring to help the dub track, but I did that since the rip GoldenUmi on NAC had worked on skipped a bit or two so it was sort of unusable. It’s a real shame it wasn’t released or used more often. 😭😭😭
Lemme know what you think, folks! Going back to work on GX 41 soon, so stay tuned!
5D’s “Dub-Uncut” Episode 25 WIP #4: Riding Duel!
Here’s one more preview! This one’s to show off how it sounds with a ripped version of the “Speed World” remix playing in the background; a piece of this version only played in episodes 1 and 25 before being used in full in episode 119; it’s one I’d really like a by-ear recreation of from the Japanese fandom (or whoever’s good at it, really). D: I was going to use the version GoldenUmi was able to rip, but there’s a skip a bit into it that I couldn’t work with, so I vocal-removed the DVD audio and got a clear-ish rip to use here (the D-Wheel whirring is still there, which helps here since the dub track can be a bit quiet SFX-wise).
I also tweaked some of Yusei’s thoughts to match JP!Yusei’s, and Jack loses a second of added fluff. And also readded some SFX as Speed World activated, since the dub track was a bit quiet. I finished the credits, so I should have this up and ready soon-ish; I’ll post it with a preview of the preview (since I haven’t shown off the custom previews yet) later. Lemme know what you think!
5D’s “Dub-Uncut” Episode 25 WIP #1: THAT SCENE
Just a little preview, as I’m getting things started with uncutting dubbed!5D’s episode 25, and I couldn’t resist showing it off a bit with this clip. I’d have tried editing Yusei’s line out, but it’s too good to leave out. [and also how would I replace the grunts’… grunts 😅] Stay tuned!
(If you’re new, the “Dub-Uncut” project is where I take the accidentally BGM-less uploads for 5D’s on the Spanish YGO channel and restore the Japanese OST, while also editing the dialogue to match the Japanese script a bit better in terms of where it happens, not so much what’s said in most cases given the rewrites. It’s been pretty fun to work on!)
