(The following post contains some degree of SPOILERS for both Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s and the weird mecha/horror anime Betterman.)

Re:  5D’s is basically secretly a mecha anime:  I can’t believe I didn’t notice before now that Aki was so referential to the Betterman character Kaede (who I don’t have a good reference for; also be cautious doing searches on her because she’s definitely a fanservice character and you never know what you’re going to get with those when you search).

• Psychic powers.
• Manipulated by a trusted male authority figure (who is a total asshat) associated with an organization of psychics.
• Under the influence of psychic/behavioral conditioning linked to a completely nonsensical hairclip/barrette/whatever the hell that thing Aki uses to keep her bangs up is supposed to be (Kaede’s is actually worse; it’s just sort of a circle that gets stuck to her hair like her head is magnetic).
• Ridiculous sexy clothes.
  

…Though Aki’s ending is a lot happier than Kaede’s, which plays into the comparison I made (note: that’s a slightly different link to a different part of the overall Tumblr thread than the previous link; it’s directly to the first readmore) between Aki and the “unfortunate psychic girl on the enemy force” archetype.

Probably I missed it because I don’t really like thinking about that bastard Divine.

…Or the fact that Aki, who may be my favorite 5D’s character, wasn’t really done any favors by the plot.

I need to actually rewatch 5Ds (this was brought on by hunting down references in an episode for my sister) and see what else I missed.
