From the 20th Remaster
Yu-Gi-Oh! 20th Remastered Vs Original Duel Monsters
Episode 1 - The Blood Curdling Blue-Eyes White DragonSo the main differences are the changed up animation of the opening and ending (not pictured). More shots have been added from the series itself (as American openings tend to do), I presume that’s as they assume most people watching saw YGO the first time or since! Another big difference is the original episode is - episode, preview, ending whereas the remaster is - episode, ending, preview. Not sure why that change is but there you go!
Viewing the remaster episode by itself it doesn’t seem that different except appearing bigger, which I’ll get to in a moment, but watching side by side you can clearly see that the lineart is gorgeous and so much sharper and cleaner looking!
The colours have been changed and I’m not knowledgeable enough to pinpoint what has been done to them but you can clearly see the difference!
On to the things looking ‘bigger’ thing. This is down to a lot of shots being chopped at the bottom and top (for example the Pegasus screenshot). This is down to the fact that YGO DM would have been made in a 4:3 ratio originally (traditional TV standard), I believe 5D’s was the first YGO anime to be made in a 16:9 ratio (HDTV standard) but obviously this remaster will be 16:9 as it’s now in glorious HD! I’m pretty sure that this ratio change is what has caused the trimming of the image - you can read more about it here!
I’m not sure that I’ll do this every week but it was super fun to compare things :D

A few comparison shots.
Remasters are on the left. I used a DVD rip in mkv format for the screenshots on the right.
