Remember guys, Misawa was also suicidal back in season 2. Misawa has different reasons for his suicidal thoughts than Judai, but regardless, he knows that death is not the answer and he’s reaching out to Judai from knowledge and experience.
This scene really hit home for me; this is one of the few instances in anime (any drawn media really) where suicide is not treated with condescension and scorn. GX is a phenomenal anime that continues to amaze me no matter how many times I watch it.
Wanted to share this WIP manga panel redraw I’ve been working on during my commutes to/from downtown this past week!
Chose to draw Season-4!Judai here instead since I’ve drawn his hair a lot more, and I just started Misawa tonight lol. Also, I love drawing the Duel Disks haha. I’ll probably touch Judai up some more, though, and fix his right leg a bit.
Misawa is talking about what he could’ve miscalculated in terms of making sure they were going to the right dimension and apparently he didn’t consider relative time, but what does that mean for them? Like how did this throw them off?
Misawa is the strong first in my list called “wasted potential in GX”
The series seemed to try to have two rivals: the reformed asshole and the friendly rival who happens to be a genius.
He was the #1 in the written exam and yet he acknowledge Judai as a worthy duelist, this means that he isn’t only very smart, but humble. He can recognize somebody else’s talent and don’t feel jealous or try to bring him down, but engage a friendly competition in order to improve himself! I mean, how awesome this can be?
Misawa could also be used to show that studying and liking it is awesome. To be gifted and be a scientist is something pretty cool, and if you like it you should go for it. You should study hard and while it might take a while, usually people in the scientific community take notice of young talents and bring them in, so it was what happened to Misawa. Dr Zweinstein recognized this talent and eventually Misawa to study under him!
Sometimes raw talent isn’t enough. Judai is a genius in his own way, and even through Misawa excels at calculating, there are still certain facets to dueling that he can’t get like his ‘rival’ does. For example, Judai’s uncanny draw (if you watched season 3 it’s clear where this came from) is something that he can’t measure. Because of this, he studies harder to make up to it. Sometimes you might not be naturally gifted, but if you truly want something you need to put some effort into it. Some stuff are worth working hard if you want to live your dreams.
But apparently he wasn’t interesting enough to write. He was a useful gimmick whenever they needed SCIENCE or BRAINS to get the plot going
What I like about their appearance
Unfortunately of all the characters in GX he was one of the most unmemorable. Academia uniform and very cliche hair
Well if you compare him with this guy and let your imagination work it might get more interesting:
Do I prefer their dub names or original names?
I’m still confused why the dub had him with a British accent, changed his name to Bastion but kept his Japanese last name.
Original name all the way
OTP
Hah! I got TWO otps for him!!!
and
Sᴄɪᴇɴᴄᴇ!!
NOTP / OT3
I really can’t imagine him with anybody else. Although I must admit that his one-sided crush on Asuka in GX manga is hilarious
Favourite card they use
Favourite moment they were in
Nice ass
Ok, let’s be serious.
I loved back in episode 22 when he humbled the then-asshole Manjoume by not only winning the duel but by showing proof of the cheating. And instead of just forcing his way, he was so calm and collected and ‘no, let’s settle it with a duel’ and won anyway.
I also liked his realization (yes, the naked episode) : to figure out his path, to decide what he really wanted to. That was very important and it was a character development so much overdue. And sure, the “GOD SPOKE TO ME” was hilarious
Least favourite moment
Poor Misawa, the guy was so neglected that during the Society of Light arc he actually chooses to go with the SoL. That was heartbreaking: sure, he wasn’t much into joining the guys in their shenanigans, but he was a loyal friend —-but that was one-sided. Ouch
Would I fuck, marry or kill them
…Why I get the feeling if I chose fuck or marry the guy is only going to the nearest wall and start doing math instead of doing anything with me?
While Judai was busy initiating some gorgeous foreigners into his harem and trekking through a dangerous underground jungle trying to fight against an evil professor with a fantastic pompadour, Misawa was hanging out with Anime Einstein and by a freak accident wound up in this green desert with no food, water, or any tools to help him for miles and predators everywhere for God knows how long and is somehow still alive.
When people think of GX season 2, they tend to think of evil cults, the Ultimate D, and space dinosaurs, but no one seems to remember the fact that Misawa had an incredibly profound mathematical epiphany that caused him to throw off all of his clothes and to run around campus completely naked.
