To decide the Academia’s delegate for the Academy Face-Off Duel, a duel occurs between Judai and Misawa. Misawa prepares his seventh deck–based on detailed calculations–in order to thwart Judai. While scuffling with Misawa’s Water Dragon, Judai faces him with his E-Heroes, but he plays right into Misawa’s strategy. Elsewhere, a man out to get rich quick by making a scoop out of the academy’s mysteries is lurking about when he comes into contact with Judai.
Episode 21! This was a fun one; this duel’s one of my favorites because of Judai and Misawa’s early rivalry, and it’s a shame it went the way it did. It was actually pretty clever of Misawa to use Cursed Seal to stop Fusion, and like Misawa points out, Judai’s easy to beat if you strip him of being able to fuse, lol. Kunisaki’s also interesting–seems his character could be a bit like Koyou in the manga from how he apparently used E-Heroes in that flashback where he loses to Kaiba, except for the lack of connection to Judai. We’ll see a bit more about him next episode, but it’s also nice that he let us get a nice moment of Hayato showing his development so far.
Also, I’m using Tune.pk because Cloudy keeps giving me issues, and Dailymotion password-protected vids don’t seem to work anymore. Lemme know of any issues!
And, of course, this episode also saw a few more fixes! Ten all together; all but one involved cards, and some of those were fun to try and do given the ghosting on some frames, lol. All listed below the cut, if you’re interested. Enjoy! I’ll start work on 22 soon. :)
It’s not often I cry about the genius, but hooboy lemme tell ya he’s such a good character that ended up thrown on a bus and played for laughs. It makes me really upset for him, ya know?
I mean, here we got this pretty fuckin brilliant duelist who focuses on statistics and study rather than the luck of the draw, and he seems rather friendly too.In his first year Misawa seemed to made great friendships with Judai and the gang, spending time with them and such. But in the next season, which was hinted in the final eps of season one, he was becoming a joke for the show.
Now, there’s not rly anything wrong with that, but it gives an impact on Misawa himself. He was beginning to get ignored and forgotten, making him stressed and anxious about his status. What happened that made others not notice his existence anymore? Could even his calculating mind solve this equation?
He had nice friendships with Judai too. Episode 12, he shared Ra meals with Judai and Shou, and helped paint Misawa’s room and had a bit of a paint fight, which was rather cute. In the Judai VS Misawa episodes, where they duel to see who will become Duel Academy’s representative for the Interschool Duel against North, Misawa and Judai were having fun dueling each other. Misawa analysed Judai’s deck and tactics and almost had him, but lost because nobody loses against Judai.
But losing to Judai doesn’t mean he’s a bad duelist. He won his duel against (Obelisk) Manjoume and was close with his duel with Tania. He was about to win his duel with (Light) Manjoume too, however his mind and Saiou had gotten to him. This is where I get really emotional.
Throughout Misawa’s life seen in at Duel Academy, his struggle with athazagoraphobia (fear of being forgotten, ignored) and possibly athagoraphobia (fear of being abandoned) was getting worse. People who occasionally be like “Misawa who?”or “Oh! Misawa? I didn’t see you there” where he had been, in fact, present the whole time. This bothered him so much. The Ra’s friends weren’t paying attention to him, he was becoming the minor/supporting character. I heavily relate to being ignored, abandoned etc and it has seriously stuck with me.
Misawa originally wanted to duel Saiou to prove his dueling strength, as he was not being considered for the Society of Light but Manjoume was his opponent instead.
Fighting against (Light) Manjoume in the last minute made him give in. He joined the Society of Light, a brainwashing cult, willingly. People say that being a member of The Light (via brainwashing) is somewhat a representation of losing your self, aka dying. Misawa joined willingly, without being brain washed. Dying willingly can be interpreted as suicide.
Earlier in the same episode, Edo was spying on Misawa during his calculations and anxiety attacks, and revealed to Judai + crew how Misawa’s need for attention and recogniton from his peers was getting to him and how he was eventually going to destroy himself. (This is going by memory of subs since I cannot watch videos so forgive me if I’m wrong.)
So, Misawa notably has depression.
Even in the Light, Daichi was an impressive duelist, getting GX Medals quickly by defeating many duelists. However, he was still being pushed aside. He even bleached his hair white to how his devotion to the Society, standing out and hoping for recognition.
Thankfully, after much discussion with Dr. Zweinstein, Misawa left the cult and had his ‘Eureka!’ moment, which contains the famous scene of the intelligent duelist stripping of his White uniform and running outside, naked.
So, things get better from there, right?
Nah.
Well, I mean, the treatment of the character was still bad. Misawa himself was having a great time with Zweinstein, becoming his apprentice. (Misawa saw Zweinstein as a ‘God’.) However he gets flung into the other dimension where Duel Monster’s reigned. He gets stuck for a bit, grows long hair, has tattered clothes, gets attacked by Harpies…
Anyway, the Ra Yellow was by himself for an indeterminate amount of time. That certainly wouldn’t of helped his mind. He helps with trying to find Johan, who was stuck in the other dimension, (and after reuniting with Tania once again), Misawa tells Judai about how he needs to accept the Supreme King as a part of himself to defeat Yubel and stop them from uniting all the different dimensions together. This was a very important part in the GX story, and idk many ppl tend to forget about it?
And after that, the writers made Misawa stay with Tania in the other dimension, never coming back. Never coming back to Duel Academy. Never coming back to his friends. Never coming back to challenge Judai again and try to become an Obelisk Blue. Never coming back for more adventures in Season 4. Never coming back to impress his other decks WE NEVER FUCKIN SEE unless you see his deck recipes in Tag Force. (We only see his EARTH and WATER deck, as well as his deck created to duel Judai in Season 1.)
Misawa Daichi deserved better is what I’m saying. I wish his friends paid attention to him more, I wish he was part of the cast more. I wish the fans remembered him. I sure do, I love him! He could’ve had more potential interactions with other characters, more interesting duels to show us! And I mean, look at him!
He’s a cutie! Misawa is probably that sweet big brother type that would help you with your homework a lot, he is a math and science nerd after all. He writes equations on walls and has to paint over them later. He dresses up as a goddamn Tiger in the Duel Spirit festival, which he apparently he made himself. So, Misawa is pretty good at costume making? Also random but I bet he’d be a good cook too. In one episode we see him playing baseball (and LOVING IT, he’s great at it!) and when he streaks his impressive build is notable, so the guy is rather athletic.
Also in the Tag Force games, it’s revealed that the nerd loves vegetables but dislikes fruit? What…. (And is favourite sandwich is the ‘Tomato Sandwich’….) He deserves many hugs and a warm cozy blanket by the fire with a hot chocolate and plenty of affection.
Anyway, what I’m trying to say here is that I love Daichi Misawa. I dislike how he was treated in the show, I heavily relate to it. I wish he was remembered more often and appreciated, and idk I wish his friends were there for him more often.
I apologise for this long post. Here’s an image of the dork blushing.
