The helicopter pilot was like “Don’t you want to land first and go through the front door?”
Ed: “Nope. Here in the air is good. Bye!” And proceeds to jump out of helicopter through the air into a sixth story window like he’s James Bond.
Ed just killed his foster father by setting him on fire.
Well, he’s avenged his father, retrieved the Ultimate D, and is gonna go save ex-boyfriend from an evil alien entity. I’d say this is a good productive day for Batman!
I hope you die a slow and painful death.
You know, I never thought much about Ed’s life and what this duel really meant for him. Of course it’s about avenging his father and all, but it goes even deeper for that.
I’m not the type of person who’s able to see symbolism easily (which this series is really full of) but over the course of this liveblog I now realize that Ed’s deck symbolizes his entire life after his father’s death. His Clock Tower of Seclusion is dependent on time passing for its effect, his Destiny Heroes are all about one’s own future and being able to defy fate. But Ed, who has been so focused on hunting down his father’s murderer and the belief that destiny cannot be changed, has caused him to not change either. He’s the same six year old boy stuck in a sixteen year old body, frozen in time. Only by avenging his father and believing that destiny can change can he himself also change, move on, and make time move for him.
There was the obvious symbolism on how the D-HEROs represent the British and their literature, but that’s also a very interesting way to look at it.
To think about it, one of the most powerful D-HEROs, Dreadmaster, is set free by destroying the Clock Tower and unleashes his power. Edo Phoenix’s true potential can be reached as he breaks free from his own personal Clock Tower hindering him.
I’m pretty sure there’s also symbolism on Bloo-D and how Edo’s fate seems to be around tragedies and grim events, but I’m too sleepy for that.

Ed’s life just became ten times shittier.
Ah, the only scene where the dub got as close as they could to saying someone died; “The one who took your father from this world… was me.”
and then we’re back to “kidnapped” in the next episode
In other words, he’s looking into your soul to see whether or not he should give a shit about you.

If this isn’t the coolest way to win a duel…
Oh god, I love this duel so much.
Am I a bad person because I laughed at this picture…
for a long time??
*cries*
Damn, this episode. ;^;
I have started to like Ed a lot more throughout the last two episodes. Despite everything that has happened he wants to help Judai because he had also helped him and Saiou. Also, he cared about Echo, whom he has just met, and wants to prevent Amon from sacrificing her.
And in the scene above, my jaw dropped and I really had to pause because it left such an impression on me. Killing someone because of power is basically what had happened to Ed’s dad, and this explains his reaction right here.
Additionally, Judai (who has been quiet and emotionless throughout the duel) realizes that Amon is going to do the same mistake that he did and tells him to stop (the sound of Judai’s voice at that moment almost made me cry D:).
And Amon… I never liked him.
This is one of the episodes I am going to remember, because it was so powerful and heartbreaking (actually, many parts of this season are). It really left an impression on me and I cannot even put it in words properly.
Yeah, realizing that Ed is getting so emotionally involved because he’s (subconsciously?) drawing parallels between Amon and DD throws a new light on everything, and it’s great. I think Ed also sees himself in Echo. He cared deeply for DD, but in the end DD admits that he was just using him and that his usefulness has come to an end. Echo loves Amon, and Amon is going to use and then discard her (whether or not Amon loves Echo is a complicated issue and I think Yubel does a better job of picking that apart than I could, so I’ll leave that to zir). DD killed Ed’s father to obtain power, but he also almost did the same thing to Ed — IIRC his duel with Ed was supposed to prove that he was a suitable host for the Light.
Not to mention that Saiou was basically supposed to be a sacrifice to the Light as well. It’s really no wonder that Ed has a problem with the concept of sacrificing others to gain power. He has a problem with the concept of sacrifices in general, really — he refuses to let his own death be called a sacrifice, because screw that, he was only doing what he felt was right. Ed might not have been able to save his father, and he ultimately had to rely on Judai to save Saiou, but he’s going to try his hardest to save Echo — and when that fails, at least he can save the rest of his friends, and repay his debt to Judai in the process.
The first time I watched this episode, I missed all that subtext and was just like, REALLY SHOW? ED’S REALLY GOING TO DIE TO AMON BECAUSE OF SOMEONE HE JUST MET? But when I rewatched it, I thought it was a really great crystallization of Ed’s character arc up until this point.

Hey Ed, was it destiny that you stole Judai’s golden egg sandwich? Hmm?
This and the bit in the beginning were nice throwbacks to the drawbread from Season 1; of course, the dub removed them for some reason. I like that it’s referenced later in Season 4 too, in that one scene in 164.
