30 Day Anime Challenge, Day 9: “Best anime villain.”
I choose Kiryu from Yu Gi Oh! 5Ds, because his story was just so compelling. He tried to wrench control of Satellite from some corrupt, powerful people, but in the end was corrupted by the desire for power himself, culminating in him brutally and bloodily attacking a Sector Security officer (which was HELLA dark for a Saturday morning cartoon). Then, Kiryu was tragically abused by prison guards (which really hit a chord with me, because the rights of convicts is a personal cause of mine) and died in prison (have I mentioned that this is a “kid’s show”?), believing that his beloved Yusei has betrayed him.
Then, he comes back from the dead as a fantastically creepy Dark Signer, hell-bent on revenge. He cackles sadistically as he injures Yusei and sacrifices human souls to summon an eldritch abomination. He becomes unquestionably villainous. But, by the end of the duel, you still pity his plight and, like Yusei, don’t want him to die. If you’re like me, you might have even become a Yusei/Kiryu shipper.
But one of the most interesting things about Kiryu is that when he returns once again from death and realizes that Yusei did not betray him after all, he becomes so consumed with guilt for hurting his
boyfriendfriend that he acts legitimately suicidal. Yusei has to convince him that just because he did villainous things, does not mean he is undeserving of life. It’s the way we see Kiryu from so many angles, not just as some one-dimensional villain, but as a flawed but ultimately good person who deserves a second chance to atone for his villainy, that makes him my favorite.
I thought you’d all like to see these couple of lines where he’s talking to the Player, and explaining a few things, and there’s this face. Most of the time here he’s got this deadpan… dead look on. Which doesn’t change much.
And then there’s this.
Maybe it’s just me, but I love how they linked it here. Because this shows how he’s not just guilty over what he did while a Dark Signer, but understands that the events that had caused it were essentially his fault. Because now, after that, Yuusei’s words got through to him and he gets it, gets that he’d been wrong back then.
I mainly get guilt over his Dark Signer deeds from the anime’s Crashtown episodes, so this is a nice touch, in the games.
