Just to spitball, but does anyone know an episode of 5D’s post-65 where Yusei had to deal with a monster that kept reviving itself in a duel? I’m checking some on the Wikia, but thought I should ask if someone remembered, lol. I’m trying to see if I can recreate an “Even if Frozen Fitzgerald [his monster] is destroyed in battle, it’ll keep coming back, and I’ll keep losing monsters” line for “dub-uncut” 28 and I’m looking for lines I could vocal-isolate to make it happen 🤔
my files for those episodes are corrupted, so i can’t confirm, but possibly the team unicorn duel where they had to keep dealing with thunder unicorn coming back and destroying their decks?

Yeah, this was most definitely a dub addition–his stoicness aside, Japanese Yusei’s never shown any inkling of a fear of bugs. And considering how he keeps his cool for much of episode 2 when it’s brought up, it… doesn’t make sense…

And all for the “payoff” when they get to the first Yusei vs Rudger duel 43 episodes later and Underground Arachnid gets Dark-Synchro’d where Yusei then says, “Oh, great, another Insect duel…” …before it never gets mentioned again lol

Hmm, so if I post that 5D’s 26 post as a text post and not a link, even though there are links to YouTube with the WIP videos in the body of the text, it’ll still show up in the tags–but as soon as I add a link to Videa where the episode is, it drops out of the tag. So, what, does Tumblr have a list of approved sites to link to for posts in any tag? Hmm…

I’ll have to get creative with maybe making a private Tumblr post to link to that has the links to things like finalized!GX or these 5D’s dub-uncuts that I’m trying to share 🤔

so, say hypothetically i wanted to start watching yugioh..... is there a place to start or can i just watch what ur watching? all i know about yugioh is the 4kids dub and the abridged memes on youtube.

Heh, seconded on GX! Though it does help to have read/seen Duel Monsters going into it, but they kind of fill in the blanks anyway. If you do choose to watch DM, Crunchyroll’s subs are good to use as they seem to be mostly serviceable. Though they’ve been currently hung on the early 200s for a few weeks now.

As for my GX subs vs Crunchyroll’s re: accuracy, here’s what I said about it over on NeoArkCradle a while back, which is still pretty true:

you can just start with GX!! crunchyroll has good official subs and @kaiowut99 has done subs that are probably even more accurate, but they are both great.
Obviously I’m a bit biased, but I would likely prefer mine over Crunchy’s. Typically, they’re about as accurate, but the difference can come in how the subs are presented; theirs often comes across to me as a bit stiff a lot of the time, and they can have some odd choices for some translations and then others that I think were translated better than how I had it. Also, there's this unforgivable sin.
Some thoughts I had when I first watched episode 1, to give you an idea:
-Awkward wording here and there. Shining example: “It’s a lucky card. It wants to know where you’re going.” wut
-Calling the examinees “exam”s, like “I’m exam #110!” wut
-Decent subs, for the most part, just literally translated in some spots, liberally translated in others (respective examples: “duel elite”, Professor Chronos’s title at DA as Chief General Director of Practical Application: “I oversee the academy’s practical training”)
-Speaking of Chronos, they translate “kyouyuu” as “Instructor” and use “sensei”’s literal translation. Instructor does work, but I’d have liked to see them use “Professor” for “sensei” given the context. “Kouchou” gets translated as “Headmaster”, which is also a good one to use. Maybe I’ll go back and use it for mine… Also, his “-na no ne”, from what I saw, wasn’t really adapted, which could’ve been easy enough to do with some “no?”s or fancier speech here and there. (as I’ve watched more of it they do have him speak a bit fancier)
-The awkward sub timing’s also irked me a bit. They’ll have an entire line split into 2-3 subtitles, and in cases where it’s 3 or more, the middle part doesn’t last long enough to actually be read. I’m sure that’s just because of the format it has to be in on their site, but still.
-Manjoume-san became “Manjoume, sir”, which I approve of; I have liked “The Manjoume”/”Use ‘The!’”, but it was a bit more inspired by the dub, and admittedly, “sir” does lend itself to the “Thunder” pun a bit better. I’ll be using “Sir Manjoume” also, and it does go well with “Miss Asuka” now that I think of it, lol.
So I do think their subs are decent enough, but I’m irked with the stiffness and sometimes questionable translations; I definitely do like to put effort into my translations so that they 1) seem like it’s in-character for them to speak what I placed there, and 2) they’re accurate while still being in actual native-English-speaker English, so there’s that. Ultimately, I’d suggest mine, but I’d also say to give theirs at least a watch per episode–or do what I’ve recommended and play their episodes on mute in the background while you watch mine so you’re still supporting the official release. Win-win!

I also do put in some work for things like fixing animation errors, translating the OP/ED credits, and translating onscreen Japanese for a good experience; here’s my subbed-episode masterpost, if you want to give GX a shot!

Also, for 5D’s, I’d recommend the TnKP fansubs that should be up on Kissanime and the like for episodes 1-78 and Crunchyroll after that because of the questionable fansub quality after that. ZeXal still doesn’t have official subs outside of like the first 27 iirc that were put on Hulu ages ago, and ARC-V and VRAINS are fully subbed on Crunchyroll.

So, those three are in BBT, in the DM-5D’s verse, but also in ZeXal? ZeXal’s spot in the YGO timeline really is screwy, huh? 😭

(I mostly joke, weren’t these three confirmed to be more gag characters since real-life parodies? Maybe ZeXal could take place alongside 5D’s instead of in a parallel universe somewhere… [maybe containing it to its own timeline might be best haha])

I have been watching more of ZeXal in the past couple weeks, and I think I’ve gotten myself settled in well! The Kite episodes were A+, and coming from seeing him more in ARC-V than ZeXal, it was definitely interesting to see his original self, and immediately tower over Yuma and Astral after he nearly destroys them; it spurs the first time Yuma and Astral start to feel fear over losing with higher stakes, and leads well into the Duel Lodge episodes where they learn about Duel Spirits and how they can fear losing or being destroyed too, to set up that lore. Then the Jin episodes were great, the Chaos Xyz powerup was neat, and the scene with Kite coming in after the statue breaks and steals Jin’s number was really good. The backstory to Yuma and Akari’’s parents was well done, and it was cute how it was layered around the concept of the Saturday Parents at School Day. The Black Mist episode! It was good to see Tetsuo doing something by helping to free Yuya, and then his coordinating with him and Astral was a nice touch–though it was interesting that #96′s form changed like that…

21 episodes down, and yeah, safe to say I’m enjoying actually watching it through finally so far. The OST has also been stellar, and I should probably work on downloading the rest of the ZeXal Sound Duels (have only had SD1 for the longest lol).

So, I don’t know who might know, but is Shinkichi Mitsumune’s DM soundtrack now royalty-free or something? Because I was watching some ad on YouTube [mobile, so no adblock] for this Rise of Empires game, and it was playing this one track that sounds a lot like it’s from DM’s Sound Duel 4 (so, Memory World arc-ish) but I can’t seem to pinpoint it lol

So, while I’m doing my 99% editing to gear up to finalize my GX Season 2 subs, I thought I’d finally work on watching through ZeXal properly (I only ever really saw up to like episode 17 or something like every other week when it first aired, and with all the politics content I watch I could use some variety in these times lol). So far I’m liking it better than I thought I would, though maybe because it’s years out from 5D’s airing right before it, and because I already had ARC-V to settle me into the idea of a younger cast if a show’s done well (last episode aside). Yuma’s not a bad main, has his moments but when contextualized as his being 13, it makes sense. Kotori and Tetsuo are okay so far, I actually felt something for Ura-boy’s backstory, Cathy’s was a fun episode, and the Yuma/Shark dynamic is getting good; just finished episode 12 and their tag duel. Yuma empathizing with Shark about being afraid to lose and fail was nice, and they both came out knowing more about the other and being more friendly with each other–as we know happens with dueling being a way to learn more about each other in anime world. Next up’s my proper Kite intro, so looking forward to the refresher there, but I’m eager to get to when the plot beats pick up later on (in due time).

That said… I was always a fan of the theory that ZeXal happened in a parallelverse to 5D’s, where 5D’s was GX’s sequel where Synchro led to the future Z-ONE sought to stop and ZeXal was the sequel where Xyz was the norm instead, to explain why, say, that episode with the legendary monster statues didn’t have a Stardust Dragon one featured. But then, this happened:
