yo I think I got a reason for why Kaiba is so obsessed with beating Yami even tho he basically doesn’t need to.
It stems from here.
LIKE, PRIEST SETO NEVER GOT TO DUEL ATEMU FOR THE THRONE, IT WAS JUST KINDA GIVEN TO HIM AND I GUESS HIS SOUL COULD NEVER HANDLE THAT SO NOW KAIBA HAS THIS UNCONTROLLABLE URGE TO WANNA BEAT YAMI SO THAT THE PRIESTS SOUL CAN SHUT UP AND MOVE ON.
Yes, this is a perfect explanation as to why their rivalry goes so deep, totally
Guys I think my heart just stopped!
Oh my god

I guess Kaiba figured that if Ra can have a chant that summons him then so can Obelisk.

Kaiba spends plenty of time chasing power and boasting about it, but we don’t often hear his thoughts on what the word means to him. I love the quietness of this scene where it’s clear that power means safety and protection to Kaiba. For a long time, it’s been the only weapon he’s had to fight for his and Mokuba’s future.
Refusing to trust, relying on no one but yourself, using your own anger as a driving force forwards – each personally destructive ideal has worked for Kaiba. It’s ensured his and Mokuba’s survival. Up until now, he’s had very little reason to question any of them.
But that’s exactly what he’s doing here. Kaiba’s standing here, a god card in his hand, wondering if the man who handed him his worst defeat is right. He’s rethinking all the beliefs that have guided his life. He’s questioning whether the beliefs that he forged out of the pain in his past will lead him to his future. Kaiba’s honestly asking whether he’s been wrong for all these years.
When I think of Kaiba and courage, it usually involves using cards as weapons or doing whatever it takes to protect Mokuba. But here, questioning his life, Kaiba might be at his most courageous.
I also like the way the lighting changes from dark when Kaiba’s thinking of how he usually views power to a bright blue sky when he wonders if the power of cooperation is stronger.
…That’s actually rather sweet and touching coming from him. He’s finally acknowledging that Jounouchi does have the true heart of a duelist, that he’s stronger than Kaiba had given him credit for before. That’s a pretty huge compliment for him to hand out, seeing how much dueling and the pride of a Duelist means to Kaiba. He’s finally not looking down on Jou and is respecting the fallen in his own way.
I love this bit because it shows Kaiba’s thoughts from an angle we usually don’t get to see. We get to see him get increasingly power hungry as this arc progresses, but I think it’s interesting to remember that he doesn’t really seek power just for the sake of being able to push people around, he does it to avoid feeling powerless and afraid. That’s the biggest gift that Obelisk gives him—that ability to crush fear. And I think feeling powerless is Kaiba’s greatest fear, which makes sense considering his past experiences. I think that is why he is so resistant to accept his connection to ancient Egypt—it’s not so much that he’s some hyper-rational guy who rejects anything that isn’t 100% realistic—it’s because he sees Atem’s, Isis’, etc. interventions as an affront to his sense of self and self-efficacy in much the same way that Gozaburo was

I love this sequence. In their tag-team duel with the Light and Dark Mask guys, Kaiba has just sacrificed his Blue Eyes White Dragon so that Yami no Yugi had time to combine his magnet warriors into Magnet Valkerion. When Yami hesitates instead of attacking the Light and Dark Mask duo, Kaiba immediately jumps to the conclusion that Yami was just using him and that he’s about to be betrayed.
I love Yami’s response. He immediately tells Kaiba that if he needs Yami to attack he’ll do it, regardless of consequences. For possibly the first time since his parents died, someone has not only taken Kaiba’s emotional needs seriously, but has actually put Kaiba’s emotional welfare above their own agenda. Then Yami does something just as remarkable: after telling Kaiba to calm down, he backs off and gives Kaiba the time he needs to focus, think things through for himself, and to understand what Yami was trying to tell him. Yami waits until Kaiba gives the word to attack – and I love the smile on Yami’s face when Kaiba comes through.
Earlier in the duel, Yami asks for Kaiba’s trust. Here he shows why he deserves it.
Kaiba’s fucking insane
Kaiba is just like “Okay yeah whatever. When’s Ra coming out?”
