[Yeah. About that.
From what I’ve observed, Shun usually gets angry when….
….he doesn’t know enough/ information is being withheld from him,
like, when Nakajima and Reiji refuse to tell him what happened to Yuuto. Shun
actually cares a lot about learning/ finding the truth, as seen in
episode 33, where he put a special emphasis on the word “learned”,
when talking about his war experiences (“we learned from
these hopeless fights”) and the summon chant of Force Strix
(“expose the truth with your dark insight”)
….talking about/ confronting his enemies. Instead of being afraid of them/
running away like the prey Academia portrays them as, he detests them and fights back (“We’re no longer the prey you can
kill so easily!”) In this case, Shun’s anger is a healthy defense
mechanism that keeps his self-esteem intact, which is veeery necessary, considering how his enemies keep dehumanizing him and his comrades.
….he knows
exactly that he has to make do with a suboptimal plan because he has
no other options/not enough time/resources at his disposal (“This is the only
way to get Ruri back!”) - something he hates. If we take a
look at his dueling style, we can see that Shun is capable of setting up elaborate combos and uses lots
of trap cards to be prepared “for the worst” and he’s also able
to predict what his opponent intends to do (he has multiple cards
that can take back monsters that have been stolen by his opponent).
So…yes, he basically gets angry when he can’t make proper
preparations outside his duels, because it is completely against his
nature/values.
Something else that might be interesting: let’s take a look
at his two of his three ace monsters – and what we always get a
close-up on when they are being summoned:
It’s their eyes.
Of course, one could say that this is just another falcon reference,
but in my opinion, there’s more to it. If you look up “eye as a
symbol”, you’ll get something like this:
And since I’ve considered Shun an intelligent character since
episode 34, this seems very accurate to me.
But why is Blaze Falcon different, then?
Well, my headcanon about his
three Falcons is that each of them represents Shun in a different
stage of his life and his development.
Rise Falcon: Shun at the beginning of the war. While he lacked
strength, he learned to adapt and use their enemy’s power
against them (which means that he had to act rationally/ make good
judgments).
Blaze Falcon: Shun’s present self: Having realized that “the only
way to survive is to win”, and that he’d always have to make do
with suboptimal plans/ decisions, he focused on becoming stronger and
overwhelming his enemies, whose number is just too large for him to
handle” with sheer force, while relying on his strength of will.
But what is the adjective used to describe Blaze Falcon in his summon
chant? Ferocious – anger. And
when is Shun usually angry? When being rational doesn’t get him anywhere. Hence,
there’s no eye close-up.
Revolution Falcon: Shun’s ideal self that represents his true values
and his goal. Nothing new to say here, as I’ve already mentioned what
his true values are. But let’s take a look at those sharp eyes
piercing through the mist and the adjective used in the summon chant:
Prideful/ Proudhearted (depending
on which translation you prefer). It’s what he could be, if he
had more time/ resources at his disposal. It’s what he could have
become if the writers had actually given him a character development
worthy of him.
And, well, this is what I have in
mind for “my” Shun because, like I’ve already mentioned many,
many times, this is a RP blog for pre ep.46!Shun only.]
“That girl learned Fusion in front of my very own eyes. There is no way our comrade, and your sister… would ever learn Fusion with a smile on her face!”
