“He’s still at it? It’s been eight years. He doesn’t give up. That’s my grandson. But, it’s said that the person who solves the puzzle receives the Shadow Game. It might be better if he doesn’t finish it.”
For my finalized episode 75 subs, I translated the front cover of the town guidebooks held by Shou and Kenzan in the eight scenes it’s visible in. I first blanked it and applied the translations in the second-to-last shot it’s in–the closeup as the two show them to Sugoroku, which I also used for 75′s preview in ep. 74–then isolated it to manipulate into the other scenes, mainly using AfterEffects’s CC Power Pin effect and then masking in the right side of the original cover (with the landmark photos, but above the bottom “Legendary Duelists’ Stomping Grounds” text) on top to make it blend in.
(Bonus: little tidbit I noticed with those first two scenes)
So discord has reminded me of one of my least favourite Yu-Gi-Oh! GX dub changes.
Making Yubel female? Not the end of the world I can, live with it.
Weird accents for characters? I’ll suffer through them.
But this? This makes me straight up uncomfortable.
In season 2 Judai and co meet Solomon Muto while in Domino City and he basically tags along for the entirety of their trip. It’s revealed that he wrote and put together a guide book about the events of Battle City and published it and more or less takes the kids on a tour. He’s a man well into his late 70′s or even early 80′s, but he still keeps up with the kids and is actually sort of mentor-like and helpful.
So what did the dub do?
Lol he’s a senile old man.
That’s it, he’s reduced to a bumbling, perpetually confused old man who’s like ‘where am I?’ and ‘what’s happening’ half the time, is convinced that Yugi ‘went to the store 3 years ago and never came back’ (this line is not in the sub, he just says that Yugi’s ‘probably out having an adventure with his friends’) and really seems like someone who should probably be under the care and watch of someone rather than being left alone. Basically, he comes off as someone with severe dementia(which also has the side effect of making Yugi look like a neglectful grandson, just leaving his grandpa alone in such a state).
And as someone who had a grandparent with dementia, let me tell you, that is REALLY uncomfortable to watch. It’s not ‘lol funny’, it’s squirm in my seat because it’s uncomfortable and upsetting.
