If someone says anywhere on the Internet, “I will wait for Little Kuriboh to abridged Dark Side of Dimensions.” or anything along those lines, don’t. Stop right there and don’t even think about going any further. Even if you meant it as Joke, to me it’s kind of offensive because apparently that’s the only thing you’re looking forward to.
So tell me then. In all the years you watched Yu-Gi-Oh! The Abridged Series, did you ever consider that Yu-Gi-Oh! is an actual manga and anime series? Did you ever stop to think that there’s more to Yu-Gi-Oh! than just Brooklyn Rage, My Voice Gives Me Strength, or Screw the Rules I have money? Have you? Somehow, I highly doubt this.
Ygotas and ygo aren’t mutually exclusive. People can enjoy both. I promise. & it’s pretentious to assume people who enjoy ygotas don’t understand (and cant appreciate) ygo as a show on its own. It isn’t special to like just ygo. I’ve watched the damn show since I was a fetus but you bet I can laugh like hell at all the stupid shit in it. Like fine. You don’t like it! Cool! That’s great. But when you act like people who do like it are somehow lesser or can’t grasp the show, it’s rude. & this fandoms prejudice against ygotas fans (Most of whom are. In fact. Fans of ygo who later found it) is getting old. They aren’t ruining the fandom. Rude ass people are.
I personally loved the series since I was 6. Yu-gi-oh was my favorite anime and I could not think of missing a single episode back then. One of the main reasons I never got out of this fandom, WAS YGOTAS though.
I was going through a hard time a few years back and this series literally kept me sane. So what if it misinterprets the characters? It IS supposed to be a parody. Not to be taken seriously. I didn’t see you have any issues when the dub did that, making Kaiba an asshole and Anzu not shutting up about friendship. Hell, Jonouchi is the one who always talks about it most of the time.
I have read BOTH the anime and the manga and watched all of the series so far(except arc-V but I am getting there) and I enjoy the original AND the abridged versions. Yes, I view them as two separate things. I also buy cards and merchandise as often as I can, so I will have to agree with @sebastianmicgaylis on the lesser factor. I know people who watch the abridged version and buy a shitton of cards every month, even though the anime never interested them that much. Aren’t those true fans? Don’t they support the merchandise?
I am sorry, but hating on something that someone spent years on making, just to please other people on the internet, is not something I can relate to. Majin, I really respect you, but I will have to disagree with you on this 100%.
Honestly, I probably wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the abridged series either since it was my introduction to the franchise. And while there are some aspects of it that annoy me and I do understand how seeing people repeating catchphrases from it or using the characterizations from it can be frustrating, overall I think it’s been a positive thing for the fandom. Little Kuriboh wouldn’t have put so much work into making it if he didn’t love Yugioh as much as the rest of us. And like others have said, it’s not fair or accurate to assume that people who like the abridged series have never watched the actual show or read the manga before.
