I had bigger plans for this occasion, but right now this is all that I can manage. Thank you for making me believe in the goodness of my heart. Without you I would be somebody less brave, less kind, less free. I love you, Yusei. I mean that with all of my soul.

part of my motivation to finish this despite all the things going on in my life was that i just found out about @ygo5dsmonth-week and that’s like so hype! not sure how many days i can actually contribute but congrats on your 7th anniversary!!

Can we talk about the fact that Aki and Yusei are both at their lowest point in this duel? Aki just lost Divine and what she thought was her home, the place she belonged—and Yusei is still spiralling from his recent duel with Kiryu, not to mention he’s still injured! They’re both having a crisis of faith, they’re both at emotional rock bottom, both shaken to their foundations and here they are, duelling about it because neither of them knows what else to do! Aki’s modus operandi up until this point was to let Divine make every decision for her and duel her anger out at whatever target happened to be present and Yusei, here, is just this once doubting his usual “our bonds will save us” mentality because he just faced off against a person he used to trust with his life, who’s now dead set on ending that life! They’re coming from completely different angles, yet the parallels are still there and they’re driving me up a wall!

Man, by the time Yusei ends up at Rua and Ruka’s place in episode 12, he has had a rough couple of days, hasn’t he? Escaped Satellite while being pursued by a rabid security officer, had a big duel with Jack that ended up summoning a supernatural entity and throwing them both off their runners, got thrown into prison, got humiliated by the prison chief and tortured twice, ended up staying with a dubious guy he found through a shady bar for a little while (Saiga/Blister ily but you are dubious), stole his runner back from security, got chased by a rabid security officer again, got electrocuted on the way out for the third time only to end up crashing into a trash heap. I’m honestly surprised he wasn’t knocked unconscious sooner.

so this is fansubs bc i can’t afford crunchyroll premium anymore & thus can’t access the official subs on crunchyroll but i think about this a lot. and the fact that both fansubs and official subs give the line “yusei would probably be king in that stadium” and it also appears in the dub… this is like. consistent enough for me to say with confidence that yusei is like. like if you’ve ever listened to breathe from in the heights? it’s like that. he’s got such first gen immigrant energy. the one who always made the grade. the one who made it out.

and the other consistent thing is yusei insisting that’s not what he ever wanted. yusei would never have left satellite if it wasn’t for jack stealing stardust dragon. he’d have no reason to leave. but everyone sees yusei a future duel king. as the pride and joy. and it’s a lot of pressure to put on one dude.
