Animation Highlight: Junpei Ogawa 小川純平
Ogawa isn’t really talked about all too often despite how awesome he is. He’s been around the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise since DM, mostly doing key animation work under Kenichi Hara’s episodes. His style (much like Hara’s) includes a lot of high speed motion, jumpy but dynamic character animation, and extravagant, hard-hitting effects. Those are a bunch of fancy sounding fluff words, but you’ll know what I mean when you see it.
Since Ogawa’s got a LONG pedigree when it comes to Yu-Gi-Oh, I decided to make a video compiling the vast majority of his work on the series. I missed a couple of episodes, mostly just ones where I couldn’t make a solid enough guess. By the way, “(?)” means that I know that Ogawa worked on the episode, but the actual clip used is the best guess I could make.
The final video is 20 minutes long. I haven’t figured out an ideal place to upload it yet, so until I figure that out, we’ll have to live with this little teaser/gifs.
I mentioned earlier that Ogawa is similar to Hara’s style, mostly due to them working together for so long. What I want to delve into specifically is Ogawa’s action scenes, and his effects. He uses a lot of sharp effect lines, often taking advantage of multiple layers of color within the effects (especially his explosions).
His early work in DM is hard to notice, because he probably hadn’t quite gotten into his style yet. Towards the end of DM’s run, his effects start to become a little more exaggerated, and start forming into the style more like his work now.
In GX, he worked under Hara again for every OP/ED. He made a random appearance in GX #8’s climax, bringing a level of animation generally not seen with the vast majority of its episodes being outsourced to Dong Woo Animation. #8 was no exception, but for some reason or another, Ogawa handled it.
During 5D’s, Ogawa really gets to shine with some great effects animation, unique and great to look at action scenes, and every now and then handling the climatic parts of important duels.
ZEXAL brings over more of the same from 5D’s, but Owaga tends to get locked into doing the same kinds of scenes over and over again. His parts are very often during the duel’s climax, and he animates a shot of the loser flying away into the background, and crashing hard into the ground. It still looks cool, but editing together the ZEXAL portion of the video became very tedious, with the same kinds of shots getting used again and again.
ARC-V brings back 5D’s-era Ogawa to an extent, but his scenes are usually shorter, occur more frequently. This is probably due to ARC-V having generally lackluster animation (especially compared to ZEXAL). A lot of the key animation staff is just scattered around. Production-wise, ARC-V tends to be a bit of a mess sometimes, but good ‘ol Ogawa is there to at least give us some eye candy every now and then.
I hope this proved to be at least a little bit informative! And I hope I can get people talking about this great animator, who tends to not get much time in the spotlight because he’s never stepped into an animation supervisor role himself. (He’s been doing only key animation for over a decade now!)

Yo guys, just wanted to repost this link in a newer post (thanks to everyone who reblogged my original post and follow-up for it) so more people would be aware of this petition.
As most GX and 5D’s fans know, a lot of music from the Japanese versions of those shows went unreleased, despite two (for GX; 3 for 5D’s, two of which were 2-CD releases) Sound Duel soundtracks, and they were a lot of the good ones. In GX’s case, there was an incredibly huge delay with Sound Duel 2’s release, and in that time, we basically got two CDs’ worth of new music during the Seven Stars/Shadow Riders arc and Season 2 (notably A Powerful Threat, All-Out Duel, Reconciliation, Camula’s Theme, Saiou’s Theme, Standstill, Enjoying the Duel and a few here), as well as Season 3 (notably A Strong Force, Johan’s Theme and his Gem Beasts’ Theme); none of the new tracks during the former were released, and most of the Season 3 songs were released with tracks from Season 4 on Sound Duel 2 when it did come out. Also of note: Sound Duel 2’s only TV-Size OP/EN were Precious Time and Endless Dream (while 5D’s had all of its TV-size OP/ENs released). I’d say that leaves 60% or so of GX’s soundtrack unreleased.
With 5D’s, while maybe 80% of the soundtrack was released, there were 10-15 tracks during the Fortune Cup/Dark Signers arcs that weren’t released yet they were used during memorable moments (among them JACK Battle 2, Yusei’s original battle theme, Hopeless Battle, and Lamentation), and the WRGP/Ark Cradle arc saw another 15 or so go unreleased (like this remixed Speed World, Sherry Battle, and Tactics). A smaller pool of unreleased stuff compared to GX, but it still would be nice to have them in perfect quality.
Sure, ripping the tracks is a solution, but unfortunately, it can be hard to keep a lot of what defines the tracks intact, and it wouldn’t be the same as listening to it during an episode (example here).
Thing is, I started this petition back in October, and there are only 60-ish signatures! The goal’s set at the default 1000 on the site, but I suppose more realistically, getting 200 might be a good start (right?). Now, this is the YGO fandom, and I know there are a bunch of GX/5D’s fans who liked/loved the series and a lot of the music that didn’t get released. There were also a lot of ZeXal fans out there who were pleasantly surprised when an unexpected Sound Duel 5 was announced, made thanks to fan outcry:
放送終了後も未収録音源のCD化を望むお声を多数頂きましたことを受け、今回の発売が決定致しました。
*quick translation by me*
“Many of you voiced your wishes for CDs of the soundtracks that went unreleased even after [ZeXal]’s broadcast concluded, and that led us to this next release.”
It came out a few weeks back and put a huge dent in ZeXal’s “unreleased music” list. Getting the same done for GX and 5D’s (but especially GX since it has a ton more) would be great, and is the general goal here. I mean, YGO series in general have awesome soundtracks, and it’d be nice to appreciate GX’s and 5D’s in full. GX especially has a great pitch going for it: this year was its 10th Anniversary!
If fans’ voices helped ZeXal, it can help GX and 5D’s. If you’ve already signed, thanks so much! If not, well, help us out, fandom! It only takes a minute or two to sign. We can do it!

Arc-V Writers:
Zexal Fandom:
I really wonder what more I can do to try getting more people to notice my GX/5D’s Unreleased BGM petition. I mean, it’s posted on here, I’ve given it the occasional reblog, it has a decent amount of reblogs and–as a result–a good bit of word-spreading behind it, I’ve posted about it on my Twitter (albeit once, but also once in Japanese), and yet it’s only gotten 53 signatures at this point–and while I definitely appreciate everyone who’s signed it so far, it’s been almost two months since I started it. Which is why I kinda hoped there’d be more support than that from the fandom lol. And I don’t know where else to post about it. Or maybe I’m just not using social media properly OTL
I mean, hey, aren’t there a lot of GX and 5D’s fans out there who liked/loved a lot of the music that didn’t get released? ZeXal’s unexpected Sound Duel 5, made thanks to fan outcry, came out last week and put a huge dent in the “unreleased music” list, and getting the same done for GX and 5D’s (but especially GX since it has a ton more) would be great! Don’t you want that tune playing when Ryou goes all Hell Kaiser? Or that tune when Ryou’s starting his game strong against Johan? OR that tune when Yusei gives Rudger his “WHY DO MY FRIENDS LIKE ME” speech? OR THAT tune when RALLY SACRIFICES HIMSELF? OR THAT TUNE WHEN JACK ATLAS MUSTERED ALL THE BADASSITY HE COULD DESPITE ALL HIS MAJOR FLESH WOUNDS TO PUSH HIS D-WHEEL? All among many others, all in absolutely flawless quality?! or most if they do make it onto a CD I mean, hey, GX’s 10th Anniversary is a better time than any!
Then, if you haven’t already (and again, thanks if you have!), consider signing that petition and spreading my post about it around. :) Because as much as I’m willing to rip these, there are some that are impossible to get perfectly (example) and it’d be nice to get the tracks as originally intended. Or at least some explanation as to why they were never released. I’m also working on a video in Japanese to boost the petition over on Nicovideo, so hopefully that helps, too.
