  • Here’s To You, Arc V

    homura-bakura:

One year ago today, Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc V came to a close.  One year ago today, it we had reached the end of the first show I had ever followed so closely, the only show that I stayed up until 3 or 4 in the morning to watch it air without subtitles in Japan, the show that, to this day, I still say with no exaggeration probably saved my life.

I had had other big favorite shows before Arc V.  But none of them have stayed as long, or as deeply, as this one.  This was the first show that grabbed me by the heart and refused to let go, the first one that gave me characters that I resonated with so deeply that I knew I’d never untangle myself.

So here’s to you, Arc V.  It’s been a year, and I still miss the rush of excitement that came with waiting for each Sunday for whatever would come next.  It’s been a year and I still haven’t let go, and I don’t think I will.  It’s been a year and I still find myself coming back every single day and finding something new, still finding something that even in my lowest points makes me want to get up and keep walking.

Here’s to you, Yuya, the first character that I felt such a deep kinship with; you suffered with so much of the same feelings that I did, and your journey was one that gave me the strength to believe that I could make it through, too.

Here’s to you, Yuzu, you’re still my favorite female protagonist, and your determination and initiative inspired me to believe in myself, too.

Here’s to you, Reiji, you’ve become one of my ultimate favorites in such a deep way over the last few months and seeing you try so hard during every rewatch while knowing what you’re going through in full, now, is something that won’t leave me.

I wish I had the time and breadth for a personal remark on every single one of these characters, because there’s barely a single one that didn’t reach me right down to my heart and leave me changed.  So here’s to every one of them, I love all of you and what you brought to the story.

Here’s to the writers, who put their all into creating such a long, single story arc that all came together in such a beautiful way by the end.  For giving us characters that were so artfully and subtly made that even without direct screentime, so much of who they were could still be understood.

Here’s to the character designers, who left us with my favorite aesthetics and designs in anything I’ve every enjoyed, characters so distinct and beautiful that I can’t forget even one of them.

Here’s to the animators, who worked so hard and created some truly stunning episodes and sequences, even with the added stress and obstacle of the other problems in the studio and the extra work that had to be done on multiple projects.  Your hard work truly shines through.

Here’s to the voice actors; this show had some of the most raw and emotional voice work I’ve heard, and every character felt so real.  Your love of your work and your characters were visible.

Here’s to the composers, Arc V’s music touched me so deeply and there are still tracks I can’t get out of my mind.  I’m looking forward so much to the release of Sound Duel 4 and Vocal Best, and I can’t wait to have the fruit of that labor in my hands.

And to everyone else who put their time and hard work into this project, here’s to you, too.  Something so big as a long series anime takes so much effort and teamwork to pull off, and something truly beautiful came of everyone working together.  Even if it’s just the job, something truly incredible was made here, something that transcends the glorified card commercial that the franchise could have been.  Every Yu-Gi-Oh has been such a labor of love that I never would have expected from a franchise made to sell trading cards, and yet every time I’m blown away by the extra effort that every part of the production process puts into it.

And finally, here’s to you, the friends and people I’ve met through or because of this show.  Staying up on steams with you guys, circulating speculation posts, crying and loving our faves together, making content and sharing the love for everything this show was for us, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.  Your enthusiasm and love helps mine never flag, and all troubles that plague every fandom aside, I wouldn’t trade y’all for anything.  Thank you <3

Arc V was the story that I wanted and the story that I needed, and I legitimately don’t know who I’d be without it.  It’s become so much a part of me now.

So thank you, Arc V.  I wasn’t going to make such a long, sappy post, but I can’t help myself. and once I started, I just couldn’t stop.  There will probably be another on the anniversary of your airing, but for now, here’s this one.

It’s been a year since you ended, but I don’t feel that it really ever ended.  Thank you, and here’s to every year after that I’ll still be here, loving every bit of Arc V. <3

  • favorite Manjoume moment?
    Anonymous

    ojamayellow:

    Whenever he’s on screen.

Okay, to be honest, I have a few.

When we first see Manjoume, we see him as a snobby Obelisk Blue, ready to take down anyone who stands in his way, especially any Osiris Drop Outs. (I prefer to say Slifer Slackers but, yeah). Eventually however, we see that he’s more than that, and that there’s a reason why. His family. His family are the proud type who are leaders, and push their youngest to be the best, which gives Manjoume a sense of duty, having the “I’m the best, only strong Duel Monsters matter” type attitude for his own reputation and belief given by his older brothers. And after with his duel with Misawa, he left to find his own path to greatness, which led him to North Academy.

    image

This is one of my favourite moments, as without it, we wouldn’t have the Jun Manjoume we all know and love.

After running out of drinking water, ending up in a submarine, meeting Ojama Yellow, being shot out of the water, finding 40 Cards to be granted entry into North Academy… And this is all on the ice. Damn.

Anyway, after all that, he faces numerous students to challenge and ends up defeating the top students, making him the new ‘King’ of North Academy. And this was all without his original Cthnonian deck. This was out of 40 odd cards (including Ojama Yellow). Manjoume is a strong duelist and he continues to show it with his new persona (Manjoume Thunder!) when he represents his new school at a rivalry face off with Duel Academy.

This was where Manjoume’s character was developing, but it wasn’t ending there.

At the duel with him and Judai, he had his two older brothers watching. They told him to use Duel Monsters cards that they had, all rare and powerful monsters guaranteed to knock out the competition. But Jun only used the Armed Dragon deck North Academy provided, and ofc Ojama Yellow. As evident from his talk from his family and breakdown in the bathroom, Manjoume knew he had to win for the sake of his family and reputation. Not to mention the duel was being held live on TV. Being pushed to make your family proud is a heavy subject for a few, and one I can heavily relate to (in fact, my earliest GX memory was watching these two episodes on weekday morning TV!)

    image

Anyway, Manjoume loses, despite doing his absolute best. His brothers approach him and yell, making the youngest feel weak. However, Judai steps up and talks against him, with the crowd from both school’s cheering on Jun. “THUNDER! THUNDER! MANJOUME THUNDER!!!!” This results in the older brothers to leave, but as Judai acknowledged, Manjoume didn’t win the duel, but he won the battle against himself and his brothers. (I believe this is right, memory is hazy).

This is so important to Manjoume. Even though he lost, he won. Does this make sense?

And to top it all off, due to his absence and wanting to come back to Duel Academt, he comes a Red! However, being a Red is important, also. Even though he may not admit it, he becomes more comfortable with Judai and the gang, and are good friends. So of course, he can joke around with his new friends and become more obvious with his crush on Asuka, which is downright adorable in my opinion. (It rly bugs me when ppl say his affections ruined his character? Let the kid be, he’s a young teen being a young teen.)

Jun’s duel with his oldest brother Chosaku is an important moment in GX too. I won’t go too into detail with it but basically in order to save Duel Academy’s destruction, Jun must defeat his oldest brother (and his deck of rare and powerful Dragon cards) with cards with only 0-ATK. This goes on to prove that Manjoume is a powerful, strong duelist and person himself, even when facing someone who would put him under a massive amount of peer pressure in the past and present.

I’m also fond of the famous moments of Manjoume being OjaManjoume. It may seem funny that Jun is dressed up as goddamn Ojama Yellow, but it’s a very important part of Manjoume’s life that would help lead to his future career as a Pro League duelist. He goes through the stress, travel and constant work of being Edo Phoenix’s understudy, and gets framed by Mike, resulting in Edo to lose his position in the Pro Leagues. Thus, becomes OjaManjoume with Mike sponsoring him. Edo and Jun duel each other however, and after much realisation, Jun removes his Ojama suit and reveals that he’s no OjaManjoume. He’s Manjoume Thunder!!! He ends up defeating the young prodigy, and with what card? Ojama Yellow.

    image

”You’re the ace of my deck!”

The Ojamas are a very important deck for Manjoume’s character. They are weak by themselves, but when together, they are powerful and can wipe out their opponent with the right cards and tactics. Manjoume understands this, and he also understands through his re-birth from North Academy that Duel Monsters isn’t all about power or the strongest cards. It’s about understanding your deck and that all monsters are useful, even if they are weak.

…..I ended up going on a huge tangent there, my bad. Oops.

Uh, to answer your question, all the moments I’ve mentioned plus the (one-sided) Valentineshipping duel in Season1 are my favourite Manjoume moments. And when he had to duel an Obelisk freshman and even defended his place in Red! (Which got him stuck in Red for another season by mistake… Oops.)

    image

Basically any Manjoume-centric episodes are my favourites. (Except when he died. Yikes.)

  • Oh thank God, someone else who doesn't hate the synchro arc ;-; Like... I'm lost?? Cuz I can tell them of DOMA arc, the KC Grand Prix, the Big 5 virtual arc after duelist kingdom, the world grand prix, world duel carnival, etc. Like... there are worse arcs. With a lot less pacing. And development. And filler. This arc really is not bad...

    entamewitchlulu:

Dude the Synchro arc was GREAT.  I can’t actually think of an episode that could be considered filler; pretty much every episode they were addressing some plot or subplot point and the story just kinda keeps rolling and rolling and rolling with, I think, pretty deft writing.

A lot of people I’ve seen have complained that it’s slow, but I would counter that it only seems that way because we’re only getting a twenty minute episode once a week.  When I went back to rewatch a few episodes in sequence I thought it moved pretty fast.  I think everyone’s just too used to binge watching that they feel like things are slowing down when they have to wait between episodes.

I’ve also seen people say that it drags on much too long, but it’s not much longer than the time spent in Maiami as far as I’m aware.

I know the arc has issues, like fridging the girls a tiny bit too much, having too quick of character development for some charas, etc, but honestly I think Arc V has some of the tightest writing for Yu-Gi-Oh that I’ve ever seen, almost every character gets a chance in the spotlight without taking too much time away from the plot, and everything is just very well connected to the overall plot in general.

(I actually loved DOMA haha, but yeah as much as I love Leon and Noa I thought their arcs were a little slow and unnecessary at points, bogged down by filler that didn’t have anything to do with the actual plot….I also liked WDC but I just like silly happy things and since it was the beginning I wasn’t too upset with all the plot-less episodes.  But yeah, I mean, put this one up against the WRGP and I have no idea how you can like Synchro less).

Dear God yes. I was thinking of sending something like this in myself, but seeing other people feel the same way still helps a lot. The Synchro arc is not perfect by any means, but it is also extremely far away from being the worst anything in my book. While I think it might be more flawed the first two arcs of the series were, I still don’t think I’d call it the weakest or worst arc in Arc-V simply because there have been so many good episodes, duels and moments throughout it. I love the world building of the Synchro dimension, the Tops and Commons conflict is honestly much more complex than what we got in 5D’s, which makes it more interesting to me, and I love that the 5D’s characters/elements provide impact on the characters and story as a whole, as well as provide some nice fan service for long time fans. The pacing hits that perfect sweet spot of not being too fast or too slow for me. They use their time effectively and I don’t think they could have significantly shorten the arc. The Friendship Cup has been full fun duels and there has been solid character development throughout the arc for quite a few characters, especially Yuya, Reira and Sora. It’s because of these strengths and just enjoying the arc in general that I’d have a hard time choosing between the different arcs as my absolute favorite one thus far.

There are points from those who dislike the arc that I can agree with. I’m pretty sure the majority of people would agree that the arc was lacking in character interactions, especially for the Lancers, and there have been some duels in the tournament that were just okay, but the hate just feels so overwhelming and exaggerated to where I almost dread seeing reactions to the newest episodes, even though I love them and there’s not an episode in this arc that I’d personally consider flat out bad or terrible. Negative experiences with people insulting me for liking this arc doesn’t help matters either, but I don’t want that to ruin the arc or the series for me, so I’m working more on that. I think fans not expecting a year long arc was a factor too, but as I said, I think that they have used their time effectively and I don’t think the arc being longer than people expected is a bad thing either.

I can think of so many other arcs from other series that I think are far worse than the Synchro dimension and it honestly boggles my mind that there is so much hate towards it. It’s fine if people don’t like it and as I said, there are valid points people have against it, but it is really frustrating and upsetting to immense hate for an arc that is still pretty darn solid and enjoyable in my opinion. I’ll defend this arc, as well as Arc-V in general most likely, until the end.

    millenniumpedant:

There are some stories in the first 7 volumes that are pretty compatible with the tone of the anime, or that made it in with only a few card-game-related changes. Then there are some that are just so over-the-top ludicrous, so unlike a children’s comic, that you have to go check your books to remind yourself that yes, they are actually canon.

Guess which one this chapter is.

I love 5D’s with all my heart and soul. I love all the characters and the amazing world building and all the stories.  But a large part of that heart and soul basically aches and what this series could have been.

I’m sure we probably would’ve gotten some of this if Tomioka had stayed on as the Series Layout guy instead of Yoshida.  Hell, I’m sure the development we got in the DS arc was most likely a result of the notes Tomioka had left for Yoshida when he came on.  Shame he didn’t leave any for post-DS stuff…
