Seto rescues Kisara from slavery, and then the bandits who were going to sell her burn down his village and kill his mother in front of him as revenge. But then the Blue Eyes White Dragon appears and vaporizes the bandits.
I guess this explains why he grew up to be such a hard-ass priest. I also like to compare and contrast his backstory with Bakura’s. His village was obliterated by the army, who’s supposed to uphold the law, so he started hating the law and dedicated his life to viciously destroying the Pharaoh and his court no matter what it took. In contrast, Seto’s village was destroyed by criminals, so he dedicated his life to upholding the law and viciously destroying them no matter what it took.
It also might help explain why Seto became so loyal to Atem (and his father). The two of them were both very passionate about justice and defending the innocent. And Seto even eventually learned the error of his harsh ways thanks to Kisara (who never became hateful or bitter despite all of the horrible things that happened to her, possibly because of her love for Seto, who was very kind and selfless towards her), and discovered that the way to banish darkness is through love instead of more hate. (Three cheers for Mizushipping!)
