Hey all, a little Social Media PSA if you have the Facebook App on your phone. 

With the last update, Facebook began tracking something called ‘off-Facebook Activity’ which keeps up with all apps and browsing you do off of Facebook and collects that information with the purpose of targeting ads… which means they’re selling it to ad agencies. This includes access to any banking apps on your phone and your spending habits. 

 Not only is this a major breech of privacy that Facebook didn’t have to tell us about when they updated the app, it’s, of course, automatically turned on. 

To turn it off, go into your Facebook app, pull up the menu from the main screen [the button with the three horizontal lines] scroll down to security and privacy, find ‘Off-Facebook Activity’ and hit the button that lets you manage your history to see all the apps it’s been collecting from. From there, you can clear the information it’s already collected, and there will be a button regarding ‘Future activity’ where you can turn the ‘feature’ off, at which point Facebook with give you an ‘ARE YOU SURE YOU DON’T WANT US COLLECTING YOUR INFORMATION TO SELL YOU THINGS???’ screen. Yes, yes you are sure. Because this is disgusting.

So after talking to a few people, AN EVENT WILL OCCUR.

This Thursday (30 April 2020) at 12pm MST/3pm EST/7pm GMT, I will be livestreaming a reading of GOOD OMENS by @neil-gaiman​ and Terry Pratchett (GNU) to fundraise for the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 relief and research efforts.

HERE’S YOUR INFO:

Who? Me. Where? My YouTube channel, right here. When? The reading will be Thursday, but the donations start first. Why? Because I’m going crazy in quarantine, you probably are too, and extra money to the WHO will save a lot of lives and also maybe, possibly, shorten the period in which I cannot find laundry detergent because of hoarders. Also, Trump just pulled all US funding from the WHO. So like … they could really use it right now.

HOW THIS WORKS:

1) Donate any amount you like to the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Response Fund. (The link will take you directly to the relevant page.) PLEASE NOTE I WILL NEVER TOUCH YOUR MONEY. Your donation goes directly from you to the WHO.

2) You should get a thank-you email that will (probably) say it can be used for tax purposes or “should be retained for your records” or something similar. It will include the amount of your donation. Screenshot it.

3) Use the photo-editing software of your choice to black out your identifying information (any credit card info, your real address, your name, etc.); the only things I need to see is your email address as the recipient, and the donation amount.

4) Send your edited page to covidcharityevent@hotmail.com. (Yes, I made a Hotmail address in the year of our Lord 2020 just so I wouldn’t have to log out of my primary email. Bite me.)

5) I will tally up the donations received by 12pm MST (my time zone) on Thursday. Every $10 USD equals one page read. If you donate in another currency, I am aware Google exists and is free and I can convert it to USD. (Since the most likely “another currency” is euros, I did the math: we’re within just a couple of cents of being identical right now. $10 is about €9,20.)

6) You can continue to donate past this point until one of two things happens: either I have stopped reading for more than an hour due to lack of donations, or I finish the book. (You can also donate after that and it’d be really rad, but I can’t exactly make up more pages.) I will stop for ten minutes every hour-ish, at the end of a chapter, for stuff like bathroom breaks and obtaining additional beverages, because reading aloud is thirsty work, and to update the donation total.

7) The total minimum amount to finish my edition of the book is $3 960 USD. Yes, if we hit that amount I will keep reading until I finish the whole thing–no matter how long it takes. You don’t have to donate in order to listen in, but if you can that’d be really bomb.

8) Yes, I will probably do voices, even if I don’t intend to. It’s how I read in my head and if I go on long enough it comes out when I read aloud, too.

9) This project is made possible by @neil-gaiman​ being a generous angel and giving his express permission for people to read his work publicly, as long as it’s for free.

The subtitles are…. well, below par however. Which is strange bcos Netflix says the subtitles come from the originator, but we have Totoro on DVD and the subtitles on there are perfect so

To report an issue you may need to access the movie for a moment so it appears on your watch list (as far I am aware America and Canada don’t get the Ghibli films on Netflix, idk why). Then go into your account -

Select Viewing Activity

What you’ve watched will show up in reverse chronological order, so Totoro is at the top of the list, and on the right it’ll say ‘Report a problem’, so click that please

Select the last option on the next page which is ‘Problems with subtitles or captions’, and explain that the subtitles are inaccurate to the dialogue in the film.

It takes a max of 3 minutes, it doesn’t feel like you’ve done a lot. But remember Netflix had to be taken to court to implement subtitles in the first place and the last thing they want is for that to rear up in the media again, so please do report this problem and encourage your non-US/Canada based pals to do the same!
