Favorite deck in the show: Kind of a tie between Elemental Heroes and Yuya’s Entermates, but I also like Masumi’s Gem-Knights, Johan’s Gem Beasts, and Reiji’s D/D/Ds! I’ve been trying to get enough DP in Tag Force Special to build a D/D/D deck (or minimal one, since not all the cards are there), and it’s suffering getting multiple copies of some of the cards. May shoot for EMs…
Favorite generation: original (what arc?)/GX/5Ds/Zexal/Arc-V: In terms of the show, I’d say 5D’s is still a favorite (despite the shortcomings after the DS arc) because Riding Duels are fun to watch, but I’m really enjoying ARC-V so far (the music definitely helps that), and of course GX will always be a favorite. DM does get a shout-out, but now that I’ve been reading the manga, it’d get more points if it was a closer adaptation of it. I do enjoy it, though, and I’m looking forward to DSOD.
Merchandise you own: Hah, not a lot of it, I’m afraid! Aside from cards, which I’m sure I still have 1000+ of from high school, lol. I also do have my WC2007 and 08 games lying around, and GX Spirit Caller should be somewhere too. I’ve been meaning to buy that DA pin I saw around, though…
Thanks for the ask! :) (x)
Ah, no worries. Looking up the names, we’ve got
94:
- Director: Kimiharu Mutou (also an Animation Director in 5D’s)
- Storyboard: Katsumi Ono
95:
- Director: Kan Min Lee
- Storyboard: Naoki Kotani
96:
- Director: Ippei Yokota
- Storyboard: Masahiro Takada
As for the difference, @ygoanimation would know more, but as I know it, storyboarders draw up the idea for scenes (like I remember seeing Ono’s storyboard for 5D’s episode 1′s Junk Warrior attack scene way back), which then get fleshed out by the animation team. The episode directors likely choose how they want the actors to portray their lines and whatnot. Not too sure on that myself haha.
Episode Directors are a weird concept that is kind of hard to explain. They’re kind of like an assistant director in that they have more power than most of the animation staff, and defer to the director themselves. The Japanese term, 演出(enshutsu) implies performance within a production. So a lot of what they do is translate the characters’ “acting” from the storyboard sketches and give guidelines to the animators about how the motions should be acted out.
They also have a good amount of influence over the timing of characters’ acting. In the case of animation, think how long a character might hold a particular pose before moving into the next one, etc etc. As such, they also have the power to revise an animator’s work (more on a timing sense, not directly drawing over them like an animation director).
Episode Director or Assistant Director is probably the best translation for the term, since they do often swap out on a per-episode basis, and make decisions the director may be too busy to deal with.
Favorite villain: Hmm… Dartz in DM is a favorite because–unpopular opinion time!–I’ve always liked Season 4 and the whole thing with the Orichalcos. He also had a neat design to him. Also, Saiou in GX; I enjoyed writing his lines, lol.
Favorite dialogue line(s) in the manga or show: Ryou’s speech to Judai in their Graduation Match comes to mind. “In a way, being perfect means you won’t chase your limits… Judai Yuki, you have infinite potential.” Also, Shou’s flashbacks to Judai in 137 and following up with “Why? Why’s his face all I can think of?!” with the sad music in the background. :’(
Favorite episodes and/or duels: I hate this question because it’s always hard to choose haha. In DM, Yugi VS Jou and Yugi/Kaiba VS Dartz are favorites, as is episode 217 because of how pretty it is. GX: Ed and Judai VS Saiou, along with Judai VS Cobra. 5D’s: Yusei VS JACK in the Fortune Cup, Jack VS Carly, and Yusei VS Antinomy, though plot-twist aside, I also enjoyed Yusei VS Z-ONE. Can’t choose from ZeXal as I’ve yet to see 90% of it, and for ARC-V, I’ve got a bunch haha. In no particular order, Yuya VS Shuzou, Yuzu VS Masumi (both), Gonny VS Yaiba, episode 21, LDS Trio VS Shun, Shun VS Sora, Shun VS Dennis (FC), Yugo VS Sawatari, Yuzu/Gonny VS Halil and Olga… And a good few more. ARC-V’s been way too enjoyable, and I must’ve rewatched the pre-50 era about 4-5 times by now lol.
Favorite OP/End theme: Teardrop and The Sun have a special place in my heart, since S3 was where I started subbing GX. So does Warriors, since it was one of the first OP/ENs I discovered before that. Otherwise, I also hate this question because I really dig everything. ^^; ARC-V’s themes have also been on-point; I love Unleash (I also like 9mm Parabellum Bullet, so their guitarist being involved definitely helps), Burn!, Future Fighters, and Speaking, but everything’s good! Elsewhere, Last Train - A New Morning, Shuffle (really dig the newer version, too), Unstoppable Overflowing Feelings (Afureru Kanjou…), Overlap, EYE’S, -OZONE-, START… There really is a lot, lol.

Sorry for the late reply!
Usually, that’s because the guy who tends to translate the previews with the info on NAC (DMC4444) usually omits the Director, but if the previews come from the monthly magazine scans (occasionally others), they usually have all four there. And they’re also credited in the episode’s ending credits; they’re in the first set of credits, going Screenplay->Storyboard->Director->Animation Director, before the cast list.
Favorite duel monsters card(s): Winged Kuriboh’s a favorite, but then Judai’s one of my favorite characters, so I also love Elemental Heroes. I’d like to try building a D/D/D deck, too.
Thanks for the ask! (x)
I know, right? I really liked those shaded manga-esque shots of JACK and Sergey, too!
Digging around the Preview thread on NAC, looks like Toshi Shishikura was the Animation Director, and I dunno if he’s worked on other ARC-V episodes so far, since ANN doesn’t show anything. I know there was an Animation Director Chronicle thread on NAC but I can’t find it to find out, lol. Next week should be good too, thanks to Yuya Kawamura; Kimiharu Mutou (another good 5D’s-era AD) is also Director, and Katsumi Ono’s Storyboarding for it. That one Sergey face in the preview works as an example, haha. Hopefully, Ebina and Hara are planning to chip in sometime during Yuya VS JACK.
Hey, sorry for the late reply! It all really depends on when Monosubs (who actively subs it the week it airs, if GX_ST isn’t caught up) releases their subs; you can check their Twitter @monoker0s for updates/releases, then check sites like KissAnime after a release. And GX_ST’s subs (as well as my GX subs, if that strikes your/anyone’s fancy) can also be downloaded over on NAC (NeoArkCradle).
Yeah, I’ve been seeing a lot of good stuff about it haha. Might start it once I catch up on DB Super, though I’m also rewatching Pocket Monsters. (I still have JoJo I’ve been meaning to get back to, too… And Attack on Titan… No rest for the wicked D:)
Good to have an ARC-V VA involved too! (Partly why Digimon Tri’s also been nice, since Reiji’s VA is Yamato’s, lol.)
Rule #1: Never trust Google Translate 100%, lol.
But really, “sore wa dou ka na” is the more correct way; “ka” and “na” are two different particles, and shouldn’t be joined together like that if it’s not the word “kana” for “simple characters used to write Japanese or loan words” (or a word period). The long “ou” is also kind of important, as a certain banana dork likes to point out.
I like my head the non-electric-shocked way it is, thank you.
Ah… I just saw two posts there, and they’re already gone. Go figure. XD
Honestly, the way it’s going, it doesn’t sound like rumor so much as fact, lol (and it seems it might go the same way with Emily Jenness and the Yuzu counterparts; at least she has a lot longer before Rin and Ruri have speaking roles). I mean, he has potential, and as others have pointed out, he’s had some good moments as Yuya. His Yuto voice has let some Yuya slip out, though haha, but overall, it’s just okay; if he lightened up on the gruff, it might sound better. And then Yugo… I wasn’t expecting it to be as deep as he made it, lol. But I guess it’s also okay, just makes me wonder how it’ll work for the dorkier moments. As long as Yuri can still get a colder voice like he originally does, I’ll be satisfied.
And I mean, the ARC-V dub has a really solid cast going, for the most part; with better dialogue and direction in a few cases, I wouldn’t complain at all. I really hope 4K decides to do an uncut dub at some point, because ARC-V is one series that could really use it (especially because of the music, and hearing Shipman delivering Shun’s lines would be amazeballs).

ALL ACCORDING TO KEIKAKU
