Not a bother at all!

Hmm… that’s actually interesting.  I mean, I’d always interpret it as “my servant/loyal monsters!”, given the grammar there; “no” is possessive (in that the “servant” descriptor applies to “monsutaa-tachi”) and “waga” is referring to oneself, so I’d translate it as “My monster servants!” or “My loyal monsters!” (admittedly, the second has a slightly better ring to it for me).  Buuut until we find out more about this darkness that’s in Yuya that triggers his Berserk Mode, it’s really hard to guess otherwise.

No problem, haha.  So, basically, it all originated from ZeXal episode 30, which involved a guy who was all about tomatoes.  From what I hear, the actual episode was so ridiculous that, once the subs came out (or once they’d been around for a while), they were put on other episodes “for the lulz,” generally serious episodes, and eventually they were put on the other series; some people have even put them on other non-YGO series! 

Really, it’s just amazing how well they fit their new context sometimes, haha.

Hey there! Good question, haha.  

So I basically just picked up this book called Japanese in Mangaland (I forget the author) back in early high school–pretty much on a whim–and thought, “Hey, this looks cool!” The book basically teaches you by using manga panels; it’ll have a few pages of lesson material, then shows it in action before giving you some exercises to try–definitely a good start for learning from scratch.  I kept renewing it and had a notebook I used to take notes from it in with me, even sometimes using it when I should’ve been focused on my Italian classes haha (logic being “Hey, I’m doing so well anyway, so…” [and I pretty much aced it for 2-3 years; forgotten much of it now haha]).  Then, I just took classes once I got to college, which really helped cement things, and that was when I was really picking up with my subbing, leaning less on summaries and more on my listening/Google-fu for phrases I could make out; even had one of my professors help me here/there!

So, yeah, that book would definitely be a good start! I’d also look into the Genki series of textbooks; those were the books we used in class, which were also great, with a lot of exercises, and they also come with CDs of dialogues to practice your listening comprehension.  Watching dramas and other such shows in Japanese is also helpful; when I’m not subbing, I keep my Japanese in check basically with the new ARC-V episodes (seems I know enough to get about 80% of what’s being said, save for any words I don’t make out in a first listen).  It’d also be helpful. once you get used to hiragana/katakana and basic kanji, to look into Japanese newspapers to read.  something i’ve actually been meaning to do whoops

Yuzu of the Fan

Fyusi–I mean Yugo the Dork

Definitely those two.  Yuzu’s development has been good, liked her resolve to get better through learning Fusion and rocking at it (honorable mention to Selena, but knowing more about her would be great), while Yugo’s also been fun to watch, and it still kills me that he and Yuto clashed because of Yuri’s making it a misunderstanding.  We do have some more to learn about Yugo too, and I’m still waiting for them to explain his sync with Yuya from a few episodes ago.

Though Yuri’s also up there too, just because he’s really interesting.  I remember there was an Animedia article saying Yuri does what he does with the Professor because he just likes it (I think), so seeing how his character development goes’ll be nice.  And an honorable mention for Yuya given how he won me over back in episode 4, has been nice to see him slowly grow, and now seeing his ideals clash with the City’s ideals, him taking Jack’s words to heart, dealing with this war’s fallout–it’ll be interesting to see.  Also, Berserk Mode.

Not a bother at all! So, YSDS and LDS, as I understand it, are just different extra-curricular cram schools that the students go to; they all still go to the same main school. That’s why Yuya has the same uniform as Sawatari and his goons.

Well, with Rex’s exposition in episode 7, we were led to think Yliaster was this super-secret organization responsible for the big phenomena in the world like wars, droughts, economic turmoil, etc.  Then suddenly, time-warping robots.  We also never found out who mystery man is, either, and he’s seen also talking to Yaeger in a scene or two.  Pretty sure he’s the voice that talks as the Dark Signers are taken over against their will, too.

What could’ve been, if either Tomioka got to keep head-writing for the show, or the story didn’t have to get changed so much…

But hey, it’s good to see you around again, haha.  Sure, I’ve been meaning to post up some thoughts about it since I’ve already shared some with skelenator-rainbow, I just haven’t had much time with IRL shenanigans.  I also haven’t seen past episode 1, so I do want to reserve full judgment until I get their 12.

That said, things I’ve noticed, based on just episode 1:

-Awkward wording here and there.  Shining example: “It’s a lucky card. It wants to know where you’re going.” wut

-Calling the examinees “exam”s, like “I’m exam #110!” wut

-Decent subs, for the most part, just literally translated in some spots, liberally translated in others (respective examples: “duel elite”, Professor Chronos’s title at DA as Chief General Director of Practical Application: “I oversee the academy’s practical training”

-Speaking of Chronos, they translate “kyouyuu” as “Instructor” and use “sensei”’s literal translation.  Instructor does work, but I’d have liked to see them use “Professor” for “sensei” given the context.  “Kouchou” gets translated as “Headmaster”, which is also a good one to use.  Maybe I’ll go back and use it for mine… Also, his “-na no ne”, from what I saw, wasn’t really adapted, which could’ve been easy enough to do with some “no?”s or fancier speech here and there.

-The awkward sub timing’s also irked me a bit.  They’ll have an entire line split into 2-3 subtitles, and in cases where it’s 3 or more, the middle part doesn’t last long enough to actually be read.  I’m sure that’s just because of the format it has to be in on their site, but still.

-Manjoume-san became “Manjoume, sir”, which I approve of; I have liked “The Manjoume”/”Use ‘The!’”, but it was a bit more inspired by the dub, and admittedly, “sir” does lend itself to the “Thunder” pun a bit better.  I’ll be using “Sir Manjoume” also, and it does go well with “Miss Asuka” now that I think of it, lol.

-Also, the OP/EN don’t have subs to them atm.  Hopefully, they’ll get back to them and it’s not just laziness.

But yeah, otherwise, the subs are decently translated so far, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they handle a few of the lines I couldn’t figure out when I first went through 13-17.  Like I said, I’ll have a slightly more in-depth post ready after I get further in, lol.

Personal preference? Hmm… Guess I’d say 5D’s (1-26)/ARC-V>GX/5D’s (rest)>DM>ZeXal.  

Though it should be noticed I don’t dislike any of them, and they all get points for an awesome soundtrack to make things more enjoyable, lol.  

ZeXal’s last by virtue of not having seen it through yet; it could change when I finally watch it.  DM’s there because, while it’s enjoyable, the manga might overtake it once I get past Yugi VS Malik; I’m still waiting on a YGO:Brotherhood to get things properly adapted! 5D’s’ Fortune Cup arc and ARC-V are a bit tied for me, given the awesome writing going on in each (and Yuya pretty much won me over in episode 4).  GX is high up for obvious reasons, haha (though my favorite thing about it is how character-driven it is, and the development Judai and Shou get), and I like it about evenly with the rest of 5D’s; enjoyed the DS arc, and the rest was watchable at least, though I appreciated the quality increase in the Ark Cradle arc, Sherry and Yusei=/=Zone mostly aside.

As for faves, I’d say GX, but like above, ARC-V and 5D’s are up there.

Iunno if he’s a writer, but it’s the Director of 5D’s, Katsumi Ono, who’s gone on to be Director for ARC-V.  The head writer for the series is Tsutomu Kamishiro (believe he’s written for the 2011 HunterXHunter and some of ZeXal?).  And yeah, Atsuhiro Tomioka was head writer for 5D’s 1-26, then Yoshida swooped in after for the remainder, though I believe he wrote the DS Arc mostly using notes left by Tomioka.  Tomioka went on to work on Pokemon Best Wishes, IIRC.

Sorry for the late reply, lol.  I do still collect the cards every so often, but I don’t bust my decks out much.  Really enjoying Yuya’s deck myself, but Shun’s is also cool to watch.  17400 ATK FTW.

I haven’t yet, but I’ve actually been meaning to.  I just translated Future Fighter! too, so as soon as I get the lyrics off NAC, I’ll be giving it a whirl.

Faith = YuAki, Scoop = JACK/Carly, right? Shippings aren’t a thing I’m that huge on in fandom, unless the show hints to it lol.

That said, I’m with both of them, especially Scoop given the whole love confession that was promptly swept into the Netherworld.  Also, Carly demanding that Jack give her heart back? FEELS.  Did like the YuAki finale scene in 154 too, and a kiss would’ve definitely worked there, but I like it as is too.
