Hey, I'm an old GX fan rediscovering the series and I just wanted to thank you for all your hard work with the GX subs! <3 You do an enormous amount of work and as someone experiencing the series properly subbed for the first time I can't say how much I appreciate it!
Aw, thanks for the kind words! It’s a labor of love really, haha; it’s nice knowing they’re helping folks get into the show nicely 🙂
Hi! Probably an odd question, but are you the same GymLeaderLance who used to hang out on the Janime forums waaaay back when?
Heya, not odd at all; if it’s “GymLeaderLance99” you’re thinking of, that actually would be me! 🙂 I’d then joined the migration from there to NeoArkCradle once Janime’s site went down, lol.
Hey man bless you for fansubbing Yugioh GX still. I've loved Yugioh GX since I saw the shitty dub years and years ago as a child. I've never finished the original subbed series (I've tried many times throughout the years but got distracted multiple times), and recently I got the desire to try and finish the original subbed series. However, since Crunchyroll locked the subbed version behind a paywall, I was dejected until I found your fansubs. Thanks for doing good work!
Thanks for the kind words, glad you’ve been enjoying ‘em! 🙂
I did hear about that move by Crunchyroll, bit odd on their part given how much traffic I’m sure the official subs and VRAINS simulcasting were bringing to the site, but then I’m sure that was part of the idea (thanks capitalism). I do love GX, hence why I’ve been going through finalizing my subs and all now.
(Was also first exposed to the dub, then one random Season 2 ep in Japanese left a great enough impression, lol. While I have mellowed out on the dub over the years and can appreciate some of the good in there when it tries, it really feels more cohesive in its original Japanese, all things considered.)
And would def recommend seeing it through; I’m sure you’ll easily want to keep going once you hit late Season 2 as things pick up, haha.
showing my friend gx for the first time and he keeps laughing his ass off every time cronos speaks. like I never even noticed it before but as he points out, cronos speaks japanese with the inflection of a stereotypical italian. like "desUUUUU no ne" it's so funny. every day I find more reasons to love cronos.
Friendly reminder You can turn off reblogs on certain posts if you need to ^^b
See, I thought I could but I could never spot the option so 😅
Looks like it’s also not a thing on the previous post editor, but I see it with the new one now when making a new post; it looks like I can’t edit previous old-editor posts with that, so I’ll keep that in mind for those sub link posts going forward, lol. Thanks for the heads-up! :)
i came accross your account looking for yu-gi-oh uncut dub edits, and was wondering if you ever thought of doing something like that? ie, taking the dub audio but putting it over the jp visuals for scenes that were censored
Heya!
So I kinda have done that already–between my 5D’s “Dub-Uncut” project (triggered by official accidentally musicless dub uploads, though I went beyond just slapping the audio on the JP visuals and edited the lines as able for more script accuracy and added the JP music and OP/ENs; see my related tag for more details lol) and the nine DM uncut dub episodes I uploaded here (taking the short-lived uncut dub and putting it over the JP footage with some consistency and SFX fixes)–and have done that occasionally with clips, some of which I need to reupload to my YouTube since they were blocked a while back, like this ARC-V one I started on for episode 10.
Dunno if I’d do that many full episodes like that, let alone full series, partly due to the investment, partly due to some scenes being cut that I’d have no dialogue for and would likely have to keep in Japanese with subs to fill in the gap (depending on whether or not Duel Links/Cross Duel audio or AI vocal generators would help), but I do want to at least do stuff for the GX episodes that were accidentally uploaded with vocals only (98-100). But if boredom strikes, I’d probably do more lol. (Actually have slowly been working on an edit for GX 61, but shhh stay tuned there)
Do you happen to have any new streaming links to your 5D's uncut episodes? The streaming links currently listed are broken as they seem to have been removed due to copyright.
Heya, I think you’re looking at the preview clips I’d uploaded to YouTube, which, yeah, some of them were copyright-blocked. But the links in the masterpost I have here for those full episodes are still up and working!
Hey, Mr. Lance. I have a music question. In MAKEMAGIC, there are those parts that go like (Lucy ku ku Lucy) that are translatable words. If you made a singable english version of the song for any reason, would you leave them be or translate them?
(sorry for the late reply, I was busy bu bu busyyy this weekend)
(Also, for readers’ reference [did you know there was an official music video for makemagic? You do now!])
That’s a good question, and I thought I might’ve started a singable translation but seems I haven’t lol. I didn’t think they were translatable words tbh, but I checked with other folks over on NAC who know Japanese, and I’m surprised I didn’t catch them, though the rhythmic stuttering might’ve caused that. The stuttered words and the words they’re meant to be:
Kurushii (lucy ku ku lucy; painful/tough)
Munashii (munassy muna muna nassy; empty/futile)
Sabishii (savissy sa sa vissy; lonely)
Scary (scary sca sca sca)
Kanashii (nassy ka ka nassy; sad/miserable)
Negative (negatty ga ga ga)
(Also just picked up from this that the “pri hani fei” in the last break of the song is meant to be “pretty honey face” which… I can see now, lol.)
So, tl;dr yeah I should be translating them. :)
I love how when you tag characters, they have regular capitalizations, but when it comes to tagging posts that have Jack, his name is in all caps. XD
Old habits die hard, I can’t do the absolute KING dirty like that 😅
Any thoughts on Go Rush?
Hmm, I mean not particularly, if only just because I haven’t been paying much attention to SEVENS 😅 I’m only up to episode 4 (it’s been on my to-get-back-to list since I do want to give it a chance, but I’m also slowly going through the WDC in ZeXal for the first time too), so I don’t have much context for it and its being a SEVENS sequel and not a ZeXal II situation, though I do think it’s interesting that SEVENS isn’t running past 90 episodes, lol. From what I saw of the main cast designs, they’re also not too bad. So I’m neutral on it atm. 🙂
Been wondering for a long while now. What does your URL mean? Was "kaiowut" taken from something?
It was taken from my love for DBZ:Abridged years ago 😅
[Unfortunately, there isn’t a peeeerfect compilation video of the running gag, so this was the best I could find, but basically in DBZ:A, every time the Kaioken move comes up, someone gets hit; one of my favorite gags in the show thanks to how well they write it in in spots, lol.]
in Duel Links do you know what Judai/Yubel says to Johan after he loses to him in a duel because I'm pretty sure the English translation is all wrong though I can't tell what he actually says
Heya, you mean these, right?
It’s actually fairly decently adapted! It’s his line just after Fujiwara realizes that Judai and Johan tricked him into thinking they were going after each other in 175 (just need to strip out the context referring to Johan that I’d included–I may try to make the lines more general when I finalize these subs, lol):
The bit about feeling like wanting to get [his opponent] back is left out of the first line, and Johan’s left out of the second line, but it’s serviceable enough. Most of the lines that reference Season 4 dialogue are for the most part fairly adapted, from what I’ve noticed, since there’s no 4Kids material to reference, lol. (I think one that bugged me was in the OW when they replayed Judai showing up at the end of 156 and they replaced Shou’s fried-shrimp nod with Syrus referencing… something else I can’t remember)
I've always been curious - do any of the transfer students in gx ever talk with a slight accent or anything like that or do they all just speak perfect Japanese?
Hmm, good question. I haven’t rewatched Season 3 in a while (waiting to until I’m there to finalize my subs), but offhand, I wouldn’t say any of them have accents to them so much as just slightly different ways of speaking, like Johan using “ore” and particles like “ze” the way Judai does. Austin and Jim maybe are who I’d say might not speak “perfect Japanese”–Austin because he sprinkles in a fair amount of English into his speech (“daddy,” “mission complete,” “yes sir,” etc) and he’s more or less formal with Cobra until he realizes he’s up to something, but otherwise his Japanese is pretty normal, I’d say, while Jim definitely throws more English into his speech but otherwise has more normal Japanese, which I think leans more informal than formal.
If anyone else has thoughts, feel free to add on, since I’m just going off memory, lol.
for the GX65 magazine cover, could the third point be starting with 読者(から)? and the fourth point ending with 攻(?)法? sorry lol that's the best i can guess. i hope you figure it out soon!
(sorry, left for the day after posting that lol)
Ah thanks, that’s a great call! That makes line 3 like “readers’ top best duels” or something depending on what that kanji before “best duels” is (”読者が[?]ベストデュエル”). For line 4, looking at it a bit more closely, it does look like it reads “タイプ用デッキ” first–your tip on 攻 and 法 led me to think the phrase it ends with is 攻撃法 (”attack strategy”) based on a dictionary check (so “Strategic attack decks by type/etc”), so it looks like we’re set on that one!
So, looks like I still need bullet 3 and the heading above the bullets… 🤔
