Me casually playing Master Duel with a slightly modified starter deck while running into people with entire themed decks already, unable to taunt them ala Duel Links while they take three+ minutes on one turn 😩:
When you get around to finally updating your blog’s links after Tumblr’s recent “replace underscores/dashes in tagged/ links with %20″ update broke them:
Everything should be working correctly, so the “Subbing Rambling” link on my blog’s sidebar should take you to all of my “#subbing-rambling”s, likewise for my “#my-subs” GX subbed release posts, my “Other Things of Mine” link taking you to all the other little things I’ve worked on that I tagged “#my-work,” etc. My Music/Audio Posts link now also takes you to every music/audio post I’ve reblogged or posted, now updated with all such posts after I forgot which tag I was using for audio posts, haha. (Used this Tag Replacer to add both so they’re all captured; sharing for those in need of a Replacer after most of XKit was sent to the Cemetery.)
Let me know if you spot any navigation issues! (Or if one of the links that isn’t “#project-rambling” has a noticeable gap in content, lol.)
…okay want to make sure it’s not just me, but are some YGO-related tags broken for people or is it just me? The GX 72 photoset I put up 20 mins ago won’t show up in the #yugioh or GX-related tags I added, and that’s after I took out my rambling in the tags comparing it to the dub lol
EDIT: Well, staff’s saying the search/tag indexing issue is fixed here but that post isn’t popping into even the #yugioh tag while there’s a 7-minute-old newer post showing… 😒
EDIT 2: And we’re in after waiting overnight, lol.
Question 1: Is it any good in dub or should I seek out the sub?
Because I’d like to rent/buy this movie but not if the dub is completely terrible. Also, I watched the original in dub, GX in sub, and haven’t seen 5Ds which brings me to:
Question 2: Can I watch this without watching 5Ds?
Because quite frankly (and I really hate to say this) I’m not interested in seeing 5Ds. My sister skipped it to show me Zexal (which I’m still in the middle of, almost done with part 1) and I went back and watched the first two episodes and they were… boring? Maybe I watched it at a weird time or something but it just wasn’t fun to watch and I didn’t latch onto anyone like my instant attachments to Kaiba, Judai, and Astral which drove me to continue their shows.
I might give 5Ds another shot after I finish Zexal but I also just wanna watch Bonds Beyond Time. It looks like some dumb fun, which is why I’m even remotely considering the dub.
1) Having gone through both the dubbed and the subbed version while working on my alternate-music project, as with anything YGO for me, I’d recommend the subs more, though the dub here is at least watchable. The dub, as usual, changes more of the dialogue and makes Paradox a lot sassier than he originally was (”I’ve seen a lot of your friendship speeches, but that was by far your most pathetic” or his cutting into some effect explanations), the usual quirk with their writing for Yusei has him be a bit too sassy with his dueling lines, but on the pro side, their music isn’t used awfully here compared to GX and 5D’s’ dubs proper and they actually let it breathe (and they do what I do with the rescore in using some more GX/DM music) and the interactions between the protag trio are nice to hear dubbed (some changed lines notwithstanding). I’d also lean more towards the subbed version because, to tie into your second question:
2) BBT itself does tie into the plot in later 5D’s, as Paradox turns out to be one of three antagonists working with the Big Bad, though outside of referencing it as a flashback to tie him in, it’s not a huge deal. (And personally speaking, I do love 5D’s (subbed of course, not least of which because of how great the OST is, as usual for YGO) and it can maybe take a bit to hook you in since it starts off with the Yusei/Jack dynamic most, but I’d at least give it ‘til episode 26 before you consider dropping it–it does pick up by the Fortune Cup arc kicking off in episode 13, and 25 and 26 are a great end to it, imo. (Your mileage may vary in post-65 world, but that half does have its good sides, too, and I think it still ends strongly despite some of its flaws.))
Corollary to this reblog I did last night for my uncut DM dub masterpost (just to not make it longer, lol), but just realized (on Yugipedia) that, while the 4Kids dub premiered September 29th, 2001, DM ended in Japan literally three years later on Sept. 29th, 2004. (Though the dub just happened to premiere on that date because 9/11 pushed its premiere back two weeks.)
And then, the first of the three uncut-dub DVDs dropped a few weeks later in mid-October. 🤔
So, NAS apparently went after the four-minute clip I put on my YouTube from GX 168 (from Horus LV8 being summoned to Judai beating it and Sorano, iirc)… Weirdly, the name of the content they’re claiming was used has that Japanese in the bracket that seems to translate to “error” (so “Error - Yu-Gi-Oh!_all”), so I’m not sure what to make of that, lol. I uploaded it like almost three years ago since someone on r/ygo had posted a clip from a Korean [iirc]-subbed version of the episode; seemed it racked up over 29K views prior to being removed.
No big deal, just mildly amused by this really, though I know they went after others like Ruggington on there, too. May have to resort to brief images for the quick videos I’ve done to show off my newer finalized episodes, lol.
Little detail I noticed just re-refinalizing a few episodes’ subs (per my post last night):
Judai loses to Ryou in episode 8 after challenging him knowing he was #1 at the Academia, and part of the Kaiser’s strategy was using De-Fusion/Fusion Undone to split his Cyber Twin to go into Cyber End.
A few episodes later, Judai seems to have made it a learning experience as he debuts his first use of De-Fusion on poor Ayanokouji (Harrington).
Did he pick it up as a sign of his respect for Ryou after their duel? Possibly? 🤔
It took some annoying deranking and rank-up swings [and the RNG looking like it hated me], but my Shooting Star deck got me thereee 😭😤 *Clear Mind intensifies*
…so now what? I don’t know what to do, I didn’t think i’d get this far–it’s my first DLvMax on one of these 😂 Eh, guess i’ll see how Ranked Duels go, maybe I’ll shoot up from Plat 1 to KOG somehow lol [narrator: he might not]
(Also, quick GX Finalized-Subs!65 update: the subs have been finalized; I’m just waiting on a little assist to see about fixing the animation error I pointed out before with Multiple Slime over the next few days, so I’ll be getting started on stuff for GX 66 in the meantime. I’ll probably end up releasing both together, but we’ll see how the timing works out!)
Thanks to @paradoxi-kay’s fantastic work typesetting my translation for this magazine onto the cover, I was able to start working on getting it into the footage; first up was fitting it into the first shot it shows up in as Judai approaches the stack of magazines on the ground, which I managed to do last night.
First I took the translated cover and cropped it out into its own image, then I actually had to go in and remove some of the ghosting that happened as Judai’s shadow crept in by duplicating a few frames here/there. I then Power-Pin’d the translated cover into place in AfterEffects, applying a mask of the original cover on top along Judai’s thumbs and the general border of the cover. After that, I masked in the tied-up string on top, loops and all, and then I keyframed a mask along the shadow of Judai’s hair as it goes over the cover, the keyframes of which I then applied to a new layer of solid gray coloring–this made it so I had the general shape of Judai’s hair shadow there as it moves, which I then tweaked the opacity of, and I topped it off with a new mask on top of that of Judai’s original hair shadow outside the bounds of the cover to make it blend in more. Really like how it came out!
I’ll be getting some more editing done while I wait to hear from another editing helper on how we’ll tackle the back cover with the three Phantasms and the Shadow of Infinity pack ad (we were leaning towards just recreating it, as redrawing the beasts might be a bit hard [and the dub’s inconsistency with their edit made it sorta hard to work with too], and were looking for some help getting a solid render of Uria’s anime card artwork to then extend like a full-art render–if someone may be able to help here, it would definitely be appreciated!); stay tuned!
looking at this, it just hit me that I was accidentally very smart… i moved EXCLUSIVE!! over to the left for space reasons, but actually, that makes sense, doesn’t it? because it’s meant to grab the eye, and english is read from left to right, so in english it’s more effective over on the left.
…also, space reasons.
…I thought you did it intentionally for that 😅
You’re right, though, it definitely works best on the left to grab the eye like that, and I imagine most US magazines would have an “Exclusive” thing run like that if they had it, lol. Just kinda thankful it didn’t have as much text as some of the other Japanese covers I looked at for some inspiration, haha.
Alas, I suspect it wasn’t intentional cause the, entire episode was mixed this way. idk if they forgot the music or just, put the volume really really quiet but the whole episode was just, no bgm. Everything else was there, just no bgm.
lol wait really?
How did they manage that tho, like it actually aired like this on Teletoon? Wonder if they somehow gave the wrong masters to them–it’s like how they flubbed those 5D’s uploads to just have voices and SFX, lol.
