who was tortured mentally and physically to save the memories of a 3000 years old Pharaoh who sacrificed himself to save his kingdom.
Malik Ishtar, who had said memories carved with a knife on his back at the age of 10, serving as a literal human memorial tablet to preserve and deliver the message - in case he will meet the Pharaoh’s soul in his lifetime. Even if he was never meant to meet the Pharaoh the carvings were still going to happen (like they did to the past generations of the Ishtars - including Malik’s father) for the possibilty that the Pharaoh might return during their lifetime. The Ishtar clan exists ever since the death of the Pharaoh, for 3000 years…
Malik Ishtar, who has the symbol of the Winged Sun carved on his upper back…
…a symbol associated with divinity, royalty and power in Ancient Egypt. The symbol was clearly carved to convey the importance and divine-status of the message that follows underneath, giving little or no regard at all to the holder of the message - the one bearing the scars.
The Tomb-keepers of the Nameless Pharaoh were born for their mission and their mission only. After delivering the memory to their Pharaoh they were no use to the world anymore and were meant to die.
Malik Ishtar, everyone, said fuck that.
He decided to end these standards with which he was born in, that fated him and the generation before him, as slaves for the memory of a king long gone.
He claimed the symbol of the Winged Sun, etched for life on his skin, as his own. He decided that he - and the generation of Tomb-keepers of the Nameless Pharaoh before him - are and have always been the ones meant to be divine, royalty and powerful.
If you don’t love him for that i don’t know what else to tell you.
So, in the manga during Battle City, Anzu/Téa is only ever shown wearing one outfit, and it’s this one:
This is despite the fact that Battle City stretches over the course of two days, but it makes sense since the overnight of the tournament was spent on the Kaiba Corp blimp and I doubt any of the characters planned to need a change of clothes.
It should be noted that while the outfit shown above is shown as a white shirt and pink skirt, these colors appear to be a change made by the Bunkoban release, which release the entire manga in full color. During the original run of the manga, a handful of color pages showed Anzu’s outfit as instead a yellow shirt and red skirt. Here’s an example of the original outfit color from Duel 170 as it was originally shown in Weekly Shonen Jump compared to its Bunkoban recoloring.
Anyway, the anime started off the Battle City tournament with Anzu wearing her outfit from the manga with its original coloring, albeit with one very noticeable difference.
For some unknown reason, the “SPIRIT” message on her shirt was removed. And no, this wasn’t an edit made by 4Kids. I grabbed the above screenshot from the original Japanese version of the anime.
This change is odd because the shirt was left completely unchanged in the intro during this season
(Which, ironically, did get removed in 4Kids’ version of the intro. So much for 4Kids being completely free of blame for removing SPIRIT)
But this isn’t my main point. My main point is that, for seemingly no reason, Anzu changes outfits in the middle of the day during the first day of Battle City. Starting in the episode where Jonouchi starts his duel against Insector Haga, Anzu switches over to this outfit:
And this is probably Anzu’s best known outfit, as she wears it for the entire remainder of Season 2 and all of Season 3, which includes the Virtual World and the final rounds of Battle City.
It’s just so weird because there was no change of day in-universe. Anzu apparently just spent the morning wearing one outfit and then in the afternoon decided to change clothes to wear for the remainder of the day.
I don’t have a problem with the anime putting the characters in different clothes from what they wore in the manga. Jonouchi wears completely different clothes in the anime version of Battle City after the manga just had him in his school uniform. But it’s bizarre that they would give themselves a continuity headscratcher like this one.
(For that matter, Honda also suddenly changed clothes in the same episode that Anzu did. His is a reversal of what happened to Anzu though. In his case, he switched into his manga clothes after he had previously been wearing different clothes earlier that day)
Now that I’ve finished listing each chapter of the manga and detailing which anime episodes use material from each chapter, I thought I’d make this bonus guide of all the anime episodes that didn’t use any material from the manga. I’ll also make a note of episodes that are predominantly filler but used a sliver of manga content.

Episode 213
This episode contains very brief elements from Chapters 323 and 324, but is otherwise almost entirely anime-only material
In general, Episodes 212-219 were heavy in anime-only material, but all but 213 had enough manga material to not point out specifically
Ceremonial Battle
Episode 222
The episodes surrounding this one make changes where this episode can’t be outright skipped, but almost nothing in this episode appears to correspond to a chapter from the manga
This is part 5, covering the Memory Arc and Ceremonial Battle. This was a pain to go through. Several plot points were rearranged or heavily altered. There would be some episodes that were mostly filler but would have the slightest amount of a manga chapter in them. I did my best with this final part, but out of every entry in this guide, this was my least favorite one to do.
Note that episodes 144 to 198 were entirely filler in the anime and do not adapt any of the manga. These 53 episodes of filler include the Orichalcos Arc and the KC Grand Prix Arc.
