Firstly, English-translated chapters will be released simultaneously with the official Japanese release of new One Piece, My Hero Academia, Dragon Ball Super, and Boruto chapters for free!
Now if you are not interested in any of these series, know that “more series are coming” for this free simultaneous release!
There is also an optional membership of $1.99 USD for access to every chapter of many Jump series! There are over 10,000+ chapters in this collection, and many series can be read from start to finish.
This is a huge step forward for the anime/manga industry as a whole! To my recollection, this is the first time ever that new English-translated anime/manga content is being released at the same time as the official source without any monetary cost for us.
If you are a fan of Jump series (or manga in general), please show your support by spreading the word and/or downloading their app and checking out either or both of their services! If enough support is garnered, not only will this encourage Jump to continue, but other anime/manga companies may also follow suit and provide similar services in the future!
With the new movie apparently being set in the universe of the manga, it’s certainly worthwhile for the superfan to take a read.
The manga and anime follow the same general plot, but there are several differences to be aware of. The anime has some filler arcs – most fans are aware of these. But there are also major backstory changes (Otogi’s), characterization changes (Mokuba!), un-fillers (cramming “The Cards with Teeth” and Death-T all into one episode), scene changes (like how Yugi reacts to losing to Kaiba at Duelist Kingdom), and even subtle differences (like which Yugi is talking to Yami Bakura at the beginning of Millennium World) that change how the story reads.
So go read the manga! I’m sure there are still scanslation sites out there, though I haven’t gone looking for them in years. But I’d also encourage you to be a conscientious capitalist and *pay* for the manga, when or if you can.
The least expensive option is buying used copies on Amazon. They run about $4. If you don’t want to have to explain to your parents/roommates/significant other why 38 comic books just appeared on your shelf, the Kindle versions are $4.49.
Also, check your local library, no joke! Yu-Gi-Oh! was a big enough franchise that they just might have a couple volumes.
Here’s how the manga is numbered (bc it is not straightforward):
Yu-Gi-Oh!, vol. 1-7 — this is the “Season 0” or “School Days” section, everything that happens before Duelist Kingdom
Yu-Gi-Oh!: Duelist, vol. 1-24 — this is Duelist Kingdom, DDM, and Battle City all together
Yu-Gi-Oh!: Millennium World, vol. 1-7 — all the Ancient Egypt stuff
Yay, finished it! Finding this is what cheered me up last night because YUYA. :)
From what I understand, this is from a one shot comic that ran in Weekly Shounen Jump. I don’t have a subscription to the online mag so I haven’t seen the whole thing. I just found this one on the Yugioh Wiki page and decided to color it.
