So a little while ago, I live-tweeted a side-by-side comparison on 57 in this tweet thread, since I’ve been doing way too much politics retweeting lately, haha.  Notable changes: we lose Yugo and Yuzu’s whole “I never knew my mother…” conversation for something about Security being there 24-7, with an awkward cut to Yugo quieting her down because of nearby Security, Frank and Amanda keep their names but Tanner->Tarren (likely because they used Tanner on Himuro in 5D’s), we lose the funny record-scratch moment when Frank and Tanner notice Yuya and Selena, and we also had some big time cuts (Crow assuring Yuya he’ll find Yuzu/Yugo and the TELL ME MELISSA intro, some effect-explanation time later on to make up for the additions early on, 4K ironically passing up a chance to break the fourth wall with Melissa) mixed with some smaller ones (like Crow elbowing Frank and Tanner’s heads).

Overall, I thought it was decent; I just wish they’d stick to the material as is instead of reorganizing or cutting in shots to split a scene, or adding lip-flaps for line padding, which happened a bunch here.  The worldbuilding stuff Crow gives us on Tops[iders] and Commons is kept, save for a wine bottle and glass (sorry, Peggy!Roget, no fruit juice for you), and his “When I went out for tuna, I must’ve picked up some nuts” line was gold (re: dimension-hopping).  The Gong/Dennis show is done well enough, save for some extra/cut dialogue.  Dennis still sounds dastardly evil setting his Scales, and his VA overall did a good job with him.  Gallagher is now “Luca Swank?” At least from what I could hear; why this.

Also worth noting that there were some touchups here, like in the scene with Dennis throwing his cards into his other hand (the card backing’s the normal swirl instead of the old oval).  Likely a DVD master, and I wonder if the city backdrop in that wine edit was like that on the DVD or if 4K did an iffy Photoshop job.  Still waiting to see if 61 gets any good touchups…

Now, to look forward to how bad the FOOD VS SMILES rewrite’ll be next week.

So, I gave ARC-V 10′s dub a look last night, and since it’s one of my favorites, I’m doing some side-by-side comparing now.  Overall, I thought it was a lot better than episode 9′s dub was–the dialogue wasn’t as cringe-inducing, and the half with Yuzu VS Julia/Masumi was actually well-done; hell, aside from a tweak or two, Julia’s chants for her Gem-Knights were pretty much lifted from Masumi! On the other hand, for some reason, Kit/Yaiba didn’t get any chants, which gave those Synchro shots a good deal of awkward silence.  Also, is it me, or did it sound like some of Kit’s lines were cut short during editing? They don’t sound like they ended naturally, if that makes sense lol.

wow I thought the clock episode in 5D’s was kinda bad but it figures the dub made it worse

-Zola explaining why she’s so calm with Yusei and not Crow->“oh I’m just yelling at you because my son’s coming and I need PRACTICE” also the fact that she already knew he was coming

-for some reason, Lyndon wants to be a duelist and just randomly squeezed in a clock-repair class; pretty sure Leo left to study clocks.

-“I used to tie my father’s bowties too”->“psychic dueling and bowties, my specialties”

-Leo trying to fix the clock by starting up the stopped gears->Lyndon just tinkering around. also WILL. NOT. SHUT. UP. during his flashbacks.

-apparently Yusei knew Crow planned to lose on purpose, even though Crow set Mirror Force possibly still trying to win, and JP Yusei mentions it being a turnaround card

-JP Crow’s “You don’t get do-overs in life!” line is replaced with something else

-ALL THE TIME PUNS

-also Lyndon calls his Clock Knight a “Clockwing” at one point. there’s a joke in there somewhere

See, in 108, before Judai/Jaden got hit hard by the Dis-Belts/Bio-Bands, Shou/Sy went to him with a dilemma he was facing: with the Survival Duels being about winning or losing, he says that’s not what he’s about; he’s more about respecting his opponents through his respectful dueling.  But since he wants to inherit the title of “Kaiser” from his brother, he won’t be able to if he can’t win his way through these duels and protect his Blue uniform.  Judai can’t really answer him since he’s dueled just for fun, which leads Shou to wonder if he has to duel as passionately as he does, and Judai notes that they’re really different. Disappointed by the answer, Shou runs off, still confused.

Then, while he’s hanging off a cliff, he has the realization that dueling with passion and respecting your opponents weren’t things that shouldn’t mix, which–when Judai’s knocked out and he comes to–leads him to say that, since they’re different, he’ll move on in his own way.  He thinks he’s not fit for Blue just yet, so he’ll work his way up to Kaiser from back in Ra Yellow.

Meanwhile, the dub? Syrus is all worried about Viper being evil and Jaden is just “lol nah he’s not out to hurt anyone” (also, Tyranno talking about the “survival of the fittest” in the Survival Duels–what gets Shou thinking–becomes “if you see a pipsqueak besides you let him know I’m on the hunt for him” or something idk).  Then Jesse says, “But what happens if he’s right?” *points to everything going up to 136*

And that realization? “Nah, let’s break the fourth wall and have Syrus fantasize about his own spinoff.” And his reason for leaving Blue’s to stay by Jaden’s side and make sure nothing like this happens to him again.  A lot of good that does

Shou: “That’s right… The first thing I need to do now is forget about Judai Yuki right away!”

Judai (ep7): Shou! If you’re really my lil’ bro, then you’ll suck it up and do the best you can.

Judai (ep8): Quit whining already! I made up my mind! You're my partner!

*more shuddering*

Judai (ep11): You try to have fun when you duel, and you care about your cards. That’s something we’ve got in common. [in present] I want to duel with you again, too.

Shou: “But why?! Why is his face the only thing I see?! Get out! Get out of my head! *looks at Disk* As long as I have this on my arm, I won’t be able to drive him out…” *chucks it, gasps at what he just did*

THE DUB: completely 180’d ACTION-y music in the background

Syrus: “All right, a new saga begins–the Syrus Spinoff Show! Starring Syrus and ONLY Syrus! Episode 1: Our hero is lost in a creepy new world far from home, and never ever EVER thinking about Jaden! EVER! Not ever! Not–”

Jaden (ep7, except not really): Hey Sy, you’re not getting rid of me that easily! We’ve been friends for far too long, buddy!

*Syrus gasps. shudders*

Jaden (ep8, except not really): Friends don’t give up on friends! They stick together, even when things get rough!

*shuddering*

Jaden (ep11, except not really): Here’s the thing, Sy: anyone can make a comeback, no matter how low they’ve dropped. A duel isn’t over until the last card is played! [in present] You gotta keep it together ‘til the very end! You gotta believe!

Syrus: “Jaden! You’re the one who’s forgotten about his friends! I’m not the one who gave up, Jaden–you are! *looks at his Disk* That’s it! If I give up on dueling, then… there’s no more Jaden, so… *chucks it, gasps* That did the trick… Now, he’s gone forever…”

Manjoume: “[Judai: "Sit tight! I’ll save you soon!”] Wait, is… Is he dueling?!

*growls*

Judai, you damn idiot! Weren’t you going to save Johan with us?! Getting yourself all flared up… You didn’t even stop to think about us at all, did you?! That’s just how you are! You were the only one in your kingdom from the get-go! We were the idiots for getting all motivated with you and feeling some sense of friendship with you being like that!“

*sparklepoof starts*
