So I just re-finalized my episode 52 subs because
CamsterdamSPguy on YouTube tipped me off to missing this error in my last pass-through. After Ryou’s Treasure from a Different Dimension makes them draw, Judai originally draws Fusion Undone/De-Fusion with Miracle Fusion, but 1) he used it a turn before, and 2) on his next turn, in a move that exhausts his hand, it’s Fusion Recovery that he uses.
The shots from the Japanese version above are from my fix of the error, where I made a Fusion Recovery proxy and applied it in AfterEffects, masking back the original card’s black border around it to blend it in and Judai’s thumb above it. The dub, meanwhile, misses this and dubifies De-Fusion, but… they do so a bit too awkwardly that I’m surprised it hasn’t been touched up at all with how this episode’s been re-released now multiple times lol (TV airing, original DVD release, Cinedigm DVD, now Crunchyroll upload, by my count [and probably missing some]).
crazy how judai is so gay-coded that the sun added some flirty lines to his character to make him look even slightly straight it really makes you think
It’s even funnier when you realize that some of these attempts did, the exact opposite.
The part that comes to mind is from S1 when the boys (Judai, Shou and Hayato) are talking about their luck cards or w/e (basically cards that bring them good luck in duels or just have special meaning to them-Hayato’s card for instance reminds him of his mom).
In the dub they decided to change this to ‘card crushes’, since Shou and Hayato’s cards were female monsters (Thunder Nya-Nyan and Dian Keto the Cure Master). Idk. I guess guys can only talk about cute cards by way of attractiveness or smthn.
Which ultimately leads to an exchange between Sho and Judai where, in the dub, Sho asks if Judai has any ‘card crushes’ and Judai mentions having a bunch in his deck.
His deck. Which, need I remind you, is FULL of muscle bound, male superhero monsters in skintight outfits that leave very little to the imagination(and the few that aren’t are animals so). This deck has ONE (1) nonmale humanoid monster in Burstinatrix/Burstlady.
So. By the logic of the DUB itself, Judai has ‘card crushes’ (plural) on his beefy MALE MONSTERS.
Kind of amuses me how both versions of this scene don’t get away error-free, lol. In the original, you just have Hero Kid misidentified as a Normal Monster (odd, since 99%’s S1 OP shows it as an Effect Monster, as it was when used by Judai in 25 & 26 against Manjoume), while the dub keeps that error, but then also 1) reverts Edgeman from his OCG art back to his first anime artwork, 2) replaces Tempester with Fusion Failure/Mispolymerization, 3) thinks the Wind-Attribute Featherman/Avian coming in from the bottom left is another copy of Fire-Attribute Burstlady, and 4) of course in totally-out-of-left-field fashion replaces Dark Catapulter with Yellow Gadget???
This then gets flashbacked-to twice (that I’ve noticed so far) in episodes 67 and 105 (there, as part of a clipshow), and the errors are still there. Though at least as of the 67 version of the shot, the dub got Avian right, lol.
4Kids: Tsk tsk no no no, we can’t have a character that’s gender ambiguous, that’ll confuse the kids! We have to make her undoubtedly female! Let’s give her a second tit just to cover it up so the kids don’t see her sinful body! Muahahaha give us money!
Have I mentioned that I fucking hate the GX dub?
Not to mention, even after this, the dub forced the whole “Yubel is the guardian”, doing their best to ignore/wipe out the romantic aspects. I have been annoyed for a long time because of that.
Also they gave xir the weirdest little girl voice. It was so disconcerting.
I regret to say that Eric Stuart (voice of Kaiba) was actually the director. You’d think he’d know better.
Yeah, I much preferred Yubel’s dub voice in Bonds Beyond Time, and I thought that’s who they’d bring back in Duel Links, but… welp. (IIRC, Dunstan likely voice-directed for BBT since he was directing 5D’s post-64, so that’s possibly why the better choice was made.) Hopefully, if GX does get a proper redub eventually, they’re able to bring that VA out for Season 3. There’s also the note that dub!Yubel speaks exclusively with a female voice (to go with the edit made to the design).
Also, speaking of Duel Links and @higuchimon‘s point about ignoring/wiping out the romance, I mentioned before a while back that they’re still doing that in Duel Links–Yubel’s duel dialogue omits virtually any reference to love that’s made in hir Japanese dialogue. Don’t know why, since this is a game environment that’s not on TV, but…
