I think what I really love most about subbed!YuGiOh are the quiet moments. In a lot of these scenes, 4Kids threw in additional dialogue/additional (and godawful) BGM. In some cases, I kinda get it. KINDA. Otherwise, completely unncessary. Mind you, this is coming from a 22-year-old SEQA major.
For example, when Yugi threw the match to Seto on the tower, the original did it right to have Yugi in complete shock the entire time afterwards, until Anzu defeated Mai. He didn’t speak, he didn’t even have any real thought until about halfway through the girls’ match.
THAT’S SMART STORYTELLING. THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT WOULD HAPPEN WHEN A PERSON GOES INTO SHOCK.
Buuut then 4Kids decided to throw in dialogue/thought from Yugi over these quiet scenes, beating it in home how he’s terrified of his other half, blah blah blah. I get their intention why this was done, kinda; considering the age demographic they were going for when dubbing (which, when this episode aired in the states the first time, I was in that range, like 9-10) you need to have that shit explained flat out. I get it, but I appreciate the original route so much more due to that little bit of realism thrown in.
Growing up and revisiting shit you loved as a kid and then realizing the changes made and why is FUN, kids.
