Okay going over episode one again because there’s so much information packed full into there and since everyone’s combed through the obvious information I’m gonna comb through the “doesn’t-seem-too-important-but-I’m-gonna-scream-over-it-anyways” information. Namely, about the special group of people Kusanagi talks about when bringing up the infamous Data Storm of the VRAINS.
Ok so we have Yuri and Yugo’s duel coming up. And I’m willing to bet Yugo’s not winning it.
Imagine this for a second.
The duel is over, Sora and Ed have since left(maybe Sora’s taking Ed to find the Doktor), Yugo’s down, having had the crap beaten out of him Yuri.
Battered and bruised he’s on the ground, watching as Yuri advances on him, disk raised. Yuri presses a button and there’s a flash of blue light.
Yuri picks up the cad and, it’s blank. Which isn’t right, Yugo was too hurt to run(or cornered and otherwise couldn’t go anywhere). But there’s a blank card, and no Yugo. Yuri is upset, but decides to pursue Sora(or something) and leaves.
Then we pan over to Yugo as he’s opening his eyes, and we’re shown him floating in a sort of, void-space thing which is gradually revealed to be Yuri’s mind-space.
Also please consider Yugo hearing someone say Fusion and(because Yuri is unaware of the ride-along in his head so it’s only due to element of surprise he manages to do this) managing to take control long enough to yell ‘It’s Yugo not Yuugou!’ in Yuri’s voice.
And Yuri’s left trying to explain why he did that when he regains control. And realizing that the annoying Syncho duelist is in his head.
We have Yuya, Yuya who’s touched so many with his dueling and opened so many hearts. Yuya who is also probably this ‘Demon Duelist’ (or at least a part of it) and a violently destructive force at that. Yuya who is probably going to succumb to darkness.
Wouldn’t it be a poetic turn around if everyone that Yuya touched, everyone whose hearts he opened, now has to turn around and save him?
He saved them, now it’s there turn to save him and remind him of his philosophy about dueling to bring joy to people.
This just feels like it would be the sort of thing that would happen. Yuya being saved by the people he saved/helped save.
The fact Sora doesn’t realize that Yuzu is no longer in the safehouse worries me because he’s probably going to spend the entirety of the next episode trying to get there, only to arrive just when Yuri shows up, and then they’re going to duel, and Sora will most likely lose. Then he’ll either be carded or forcefully sent back to Academia (considering Yuri, he’ll probably be carded…). Hopefully the writers aren’t that cruel!
I’m with the rest of the fandom in agreeing Shingo is likely going to lose that duel. It’s a darn shame, since this will be the third Yuu-bae to defeat him, in different four duels at that. Poor little snot can’t catch a break.
But, I think this might also be some good character development for him, in the long run.
I don’t think it’s really hit Shingo yet how serious the situation is, both from the threat of interdimensional war from the Fusion Dimension, nor the horrible classism and stigma the Commons face. I mean, he did go to Card Game Prison, but he didn’t change much in terms of character development. He helped in the ‘cheering up the inmates’ duel/the distraction and the jailbreak, but not much had changed about him. Even seeing the conditions Crow, Shinji, and the kids were living in didn’t do much to garner sympathy for him. He was, and currently is, still the spoiled rich kid that’s used to getting what he wants, when he wants. He doesn’t have the same stakes in the Commons’ struggle, nor in the inevitable upcoming interdimensional war.
But, I do think, if/when he’s sent to the Underground City and is forced to work like a Common, it might actually hit him, the reality of the situation. His dad isn’t here to protect or coddle him from danger anymore. He’ll hear about the personal stories of people being forced to work until they die, even though there is no reason for it, other than to support the lavish lifestyles of the Tops. And I’m pretty sure, tho there are likely to be some really nasty criminals down there, I’m sure the majority of the people are going to be innocent, perfectly normal people, just struck with the misfortune of being a Common.
I think this might be the moment Shingo learns to have compassion, have sympathy for others. Because he knows what it’s really like now for these people, being forced to work for a cause he didn’t want to support in the first place.
Or, at the very least, we can see what the Underground City is like and see Shingo being forced to work, refusing, and Gongenzaka stepping up to protect him/tell him to shut his mouth. God knows Gong going to be a little short on patience after having to babysit Dennis, then Shun, and now pissbaby Shingo. There’s only so many pissbabies Gong can deal with in this dimension.
