GX 25 Edit: Explosive Bravery

So, I finally have a new laptop, and I’ve settled back in for the most part (still need to see if I can format my 1TB secondary drive or if I need to get a new one to fully resettle), so back to working on GX! For this first edit in 25, I just had to recycle the translation edit @aneroticporkcutletbowl worked on back in episode 12, masking the smoke of this random explosion over the shot. Because Manjoume isn’t the only drama king in his family.

I have maybe 3-4 card fixes I’ll do, plus one shot of Burstlady to add a strap back to, so we’ll see how I can schedule those to get this one out quicker.

Wow, I haven’t updated the script I use to slap the English titles onto the GX title cards since SEPTEMBER 9TH I DIDN’T THINK IT’S BEEN THAT LONG 😅

GX 24 - Manjoume’s Coming Back (FIN!)

But phew, it’s been a good few months since my GX finalizing was stalled while giving this clip the textless treatment, lol. This extra clip of Manjoume on his way from the North Campus to Academia Island was TV-only, unused in episodes 24 and 25 [the logical placement since the ending sponsor bits recap the episode proper in S1]. I wanted to include this clip with the DVDRip as I work on my hardsub for 24, but with how all the recreated sponsor clips I use have no text on them, it’d have bugged me to include it as-is. Enter @alicethedragonvalkyrie, who was a lifesaver in editing 200 of these frames (the original island shot in the clip was impossible to accurately de-text, so I substituted a shot from… ep9, I think? Just tweaked so it matched the rest of the clip a bit more in coloring), so between her and my tweaking her results into the video in Vegas/doing additional touching up in Photoshop, we get all this. I think I’ve spent the last 1-2 months editing in the frames off and on, but focused more on it in the last few weeks to get it finally done. Thanks again for all your help!

It’s still sorta imperfect in spots, but hey, you can only do so much with how QUALITY the TV raws could be back then~ I might post up the finished shot without the side text as an extra over on NAC.

So, now that this is done, I can start finalizing GX 24′s script! But first I’m going to get a few episodes’ worth of prepwork ready so I can knock out some more episodes in a shorter time-span; I do have a lot of time to make up for here!

Finally, a quick update on this! So through the magic of Photoshop, I finally figured out how to stitch together this pan weeks ago (lots of transforming), and started blanking the boards to add the translated text later; think it’s been 3-ish weeks off/on? Some bits I had to redraw (like Jinzo Lord-or-whatever’s belt and Dian Keto’s arms and Disk), others were just a clean cover-up; for the gradients, I just recreated the gradients and then cut out Dian Keto and the Mystic Swordsmen to put over them. I’m liking the results so far!

Just have Key Mace’s and the one next to it to clean, then I’ll be adding the text–after I get back to GX 24 to work on adding @alicethedragonvalkyrie‘s edited!textless Manjoume frames into that sponsor clip for the episode! Once I do, I’ll be doing my best to make up for time.

Also, if anyone happens to have reference screenshots I could use from other episodes that are more close-up on any of these, feel free to shoot ‘em my way!

GX 24 - Manjoume’s Coming Back (WIP)

So I think I should finally give you guys a progress report on this, haha.

First off, huge thanks to @alicethedragonvalkyrie for all her hard work wiping off the text on soon-to-be all 239-or-so frames in this sponsor clip over the last couple of months! Her working on it gave me a great chance to get my stuff ready for subbing ARC-V, and now that she’s almost done, I thought I’d start working her edits into the footage off-and-on over the last few weeks, with a real buckling-down happening in the last week. While I did, I worked with the original footage to make things look smooth overall–like moving the clouds in one frame across the whole “Manjoume’s back” shot and masking in Manjoume on top as needed–and I like how it looks so far. Then I just slapped on the banner text and audio so you’d get a glimpse at how it’d look in-episode!

The second clip isn’t fully done yet, which is why it looks messy; I’ll go back into it soon as Alice finishes the rest of the frames. While I wait, I’ll look into prepping the GX 24-26 scripts so I’ll be able to knock them out relatively quickly once we’re good to go there, with another prepwork dive into ARC-V sprinkled here/there. I’ve also been tapped to help out with another project that might make waves soon, so stay tuned~

ARC-V Ep. 01 - A Strong Foreboding (WIP #4… I think. ~~i lost count~~)

And after 84 years, it’s finally alive! I really wish I knew that all I needed to do to make that “Strong Ishijima” text curve along the banner was free transform + click the “warp” button, haha. So yeah, the poster’s now fully translated; all that’s left is to recreate the pan, then mask the translations into the video through Vegas. Which should be a cakewalk compared to this, haha. But hey, learning experiences are fun!

After that, I’ll translate the Yusho poster on the wall a bit earlier on, then the shot of the building behind crying Yuya to translate later. Since stitching this pan together in Photoshop did go well, I might try the billboards in the beginning one more time, too. But first, @alicethedragonvalkyrie has given me some frames to work with in GX 24 (for that Manjoume post-credit scene), so I’ll go back and get some more work on that done first. Apologies for things being slow on the GX front, guys! Once I start prepping things with that clip, I’m going to go ahead and start prepping things for the next few episodes–that way, when I get back to it, I can churn more episodes out a bit quicker to make up for time, lol.

…So Crunchyroll throwing ARC-V out seriously threw me for a loop, haha. So far from what I’ve seen, their translations still seem a little stiff (especially in the BxB subs), so it’ll likely be like their GX subs in terms of quality: decent but could probably use a little more personality (I mean I see Yuya using “simultaneously” where I’d use “at the same time”). Since I’ve already done this editing work to start subbing episode 1, I think I’ll still just finish it and see what everyone thinks of my translations, but I may just make it a bit lower priority and refocus more on finalizing my GX stuff… Unless people like and want to see more?

I dunno, I was hoping I’d get to give it my own translation take, and then Crunchyroll drops the big one, haha. Totally cool though and it might lead to a simulcast by the time we get to the finale, but I really thought they’d go after ZeXal first…

ARC-V #01 - A Strong Foreboding (WIP #3)

So, got back to this today after translating the text a week or two ago, and managed to slap on all the text I needed! I was able to transcribe much of it thanks to Yami’s 1080p upload of episode 1, which had the text much clearer, and figured out what little was left after some Googling for similar terms. Guessing was involved for the bottom left ad for the Fan-Mingle Match, where I guessed at the gist of it to word the lower sentence ends to make sense. Also had an interesting time trying to pick different fonts to go with the different ads, haha. But it looks pretty good to me (and hopefully you guys; open the image in a new tab to see all the text!), so now, it’s just a matter of working it into the video…

…after I figure out how I can make that “Strong Ishijima Fan Appreciation Day” line curve the way I need it to. I could still use some tips there, if any Photoshoppers have any, lol. Applying a warp doesn’t work too well because getting the curve right on one end ruins it on the other. Maybe if I could somehow pin the text to each end of the curve somehow…

Can you make a warp and then rotate the text so it fits?

Nope, rotating the text to make it fit on one end makes it fit less on the other. :/

Now, to figure out how to warp “Strong Ishijima Fan Appreciation Day” along this curve… When the banner’s top curve is deeper than the lower… And I have a good warp but it’s too low on the edges, and if I could pin it higher by the edges, it’d work… If that’s even a thing… 🤔

Don’t suppose anyone might know a trick? Google’s not helping for this scenario, lol.

So… I’m agreeing with seungmi-jongiie and fyuriosa; I do think posters like this wouldn’t have commas, and leaning more on that side, but agreeing with shadowskiel and aneroticporkcutletbowl (EDIT: and I didn’t realize you’d changed your URL, Kay, haha) because grammar (though I just had his name in red to match the original, with the comma in the dark purple).

Hmm… yeah, I think I’ll go without the commas, since I do think it reads better. Now, I just need to figure out how to center those text lines relative to the box they’re in…

Just a little update to show off how editing this poster’s going; I used content-aware filling to try wiping off the text off the banner up top, which gave me a start on the gradient there, but I might need some help to get it perfect, lol. Blanked the Maiami Stadium ad by redrawing the ocean and parts of the Stadium on the left; the redraw on the upper left shouldn’t be too noticeable once there’s English text on there, I hope. Working on the purple box one next~
