Yeah, the dub would kinda give that impression (despite how often they got the cards wrong pre-ARC-V [don’t quote me on ZeXal]), but 8/10 times, the animators get lazy and just either use a blank card-type-colored card or just literally put a card-sized block there. It’s an adventure. XD
Thought I should finally fill you guys in, lol.
Sorry for the lack of updates! I’ve had a hectic last two weeks with some personal stuff and starting a new job this week that I haven’t had much time to knock out the rest of the edits I’m doing, lol. Currently at 13 of 20; I’m planning to spend at least half the weekend finishing them (because I’ve been out of my house every day in the last week and I could use a break and some sleep). Then I’ll get to editing the script next week.
On the bright side, having my work commutes happening means I’ve had time to work on some more song translations! I’m almost done with a full!Light of Hope for ARC-V, and I’m going to work on Vision next. I really do dig the gradually hopeful vibe the song has in the second half, especially at the break; I think you’ll like it!
GX 22 - Holdin’ ‘Em Out (WIP)
Current edit I’m working on; I was visiting this scene (when he explains his Mirage of Nightmare draw) to add forgotten Bubbleman onto his Disk before it gets to this shot, and figured I’d touch it up while I’m here. Also adjusting the cards to match the way he’s holding them later; hopefully the perspective still works, lol. I’ve masked out his thumb for the shot, so now I just need to move the cards.
Added the dub because … hOW
Tomorrow. After some more egao. *sleeps*
I just realized the monster zone arm should be on the other side of the disc otherwise they’d be going into his chest when held out properly. This whole thing seems like a cluster-F of quality.
Yeahhh, I noticed that too, but that’d be much harder to fix than just drawing in an extra Zone, haha. I mean, I could just flip the Zone arm, but the problem would be redrawing Water Dragon’s animatedly flowing body, which would be a bit tougher. why u do this jiwoo animation
GX 22 Edits - Zoning Out (WIP)
So, up to this point, Misawa’s had Mathematician on his Disk’s second Monster Zone and Water Dragon on his fourth, but the animators forgot to draw an extra zone here after Water Dragon. I originally planned to just move Water Dragon down for an easy way out (you could blame the center part for covering Zone #3 lol). but thought just adding the extra zone would work better. Originally, I was going to try just copying Mathematician’s zone up by the top and rotate it/empty it accordingly, but it was much easier to just draw up an extension and move the tip of the Disk above it.
So, this is my attempt, lol. Does it look good to you guys? Now, it’s just a matter of masking it into the footage and moving it for the panning going on here, but that should be a cinch!
selvaria-official replied to your photoset “Prepping for GX 22′s card fixes when What even was this 4Kids”
Is that supposed to be Mathmatician?
Yep, they were just awful about placing the dubified card over the Japanese card, haha. Which is weird since I’d expect they’d have the cards on a separate video layer to edit, but odds are that might not have been a thing until after, maybe by ARC-V (since the cards there are actually edited really well, black borders and all).
Think you mean “romaji?” :P
I get what you mean though, lol. Thing is, for the karaoke, I like to use the Japanese lyrics as they’re written; it’s why, for “Sunshine/Kaisei” in GX, you’d see “Sailing My Sea” in English–because it’s written out in English without any kana–but “ooshan rainaa” over “ocean liner”–because the lyrics use romaji for it. In that lyric, speed’s written out in romaji while game’s written out in English but with romaji above it, so that’s why I went that way. Which admittedly does make it slightly harder to time the syllables, but idk I feel it’d look weird if, in the line before (“kachimake ja nai saikyou no kaado”), it was “card” in there when they also still pronounce it “kaado.”
That said, he doesn’t actually pronounce the “o” in “maindo” but for consistency, I kept it as “maindo.”
Oh yeah I gotta finish those Manjoume screencaps for you lol
Haha, it’s all good! Life happens, and like I said before, there’s no big rush on it. :)
GX 21: Gotta Get Your Mode On!
Finally done with both finishing 21′s script and all the edits, now that I put Carboneddon into Defense as it should be! I’d expect Misawa would get his monster’s Mode right, though. :P
QC’ing the script now; should have it uploaded in a few hours!
GX 21: A Strapping Issue #42
(Not sure if I’ve actually picked up on this 42 times, but may as well have)
So, this is a quick shot as Burstlady destroys Carboneddon that I thought should be tackled for the sake of completeness, lol. This was my attempt at putting her strap and arm cuff on, connected to match her earlier shots, and the gif shows it in action. Tried to visualize how it’d look at this angle, imagining the strap would curve around her shoulder cup which her (QUALITY) face is hiding. Hopefully it doesn’t look too bad?
Meanwhile, I also did some card fixes (including a fun one to make work with ghosting frames and one with transparency~), so with those done, I’ll finally get to start on the script!
I don’t mind the text so much, but I agree it would look better without it. I’ve no experience with editing video files, but I am willing to help clean off the text since I have Photoshop handy!
Ah, awesome! Thanks for offering!
Yeah, like, the text doesn’t bug me too much, but if it’s at all possible to get rid of it, it’d be cool to do lol. I can definitely shoulder some of the burden too, since I know how to use content-aware a bit for fill cover-ups (though the way I’m using it, I’d need to redraw, unless there’s an easier way I don’t know yet haha). The problem would be the waves/sky, but some video masking might handle it once everything’s worked on; I can just extract the frames in Virtualdub and we’ll have them to work with! If anyone else ends up wanting to volunteer, we can definitely split the frames among us.
Maybe try blurring and reducing the amount of highlight on her left cuff and pulling it down her arm a bit? I think most of the problem is that it’s on her shoulder… I’m at the beach this weekend without my computer, tho! Sorry!! there’s also a pink line going thru it from that bubble overlaid on her, so maybe play with that? :0
At the beach? That’s awesome and i’m working this weekend pfft Definitely enjoy yourself out there! :)
I think you’re right, ‘cause I just trimmed it/moved it a bit further down, and it looks much better. Not sure how I can play with that pink line though lol; do you mean making the cuff a brighter red?

I’ll tweak it with a better finger mask in Vegas tomorrow, and we’ll see how it looks!
akameniseis replied to your photoset “GX 20 - A Strapping Issue #…42? I Forget (WIP) So, luckily, 20′s…”
You’re getting good at this! \o/ The shading on the cuff on our right looks a little… I can’t figure out what’s off about it, it just bothers me, which I know is pretty useless feedback. ;_; I think it’s because the highlight is so much more prominent than anything else on her in that shot?
I mean, I’ve had some good teachers between you and xjudai :D
Haha, no worries, that’s exactly the feeling I’m getting. It could be the highlight, but I tried to use the color of the highlight on her hand under the bubble and match it to where the highlight on her skin is, so iunno… I did try to use a slightly darker shade, too. :s
Also, here’s where I am with the skinned-down cuff on her right arm, just making a quick mask to trim it down:

I think at the very least, just skinning down the left cuff like I did that one might do it; I’ll move it down so it starts under her shoulder cup, and likely mask the shoulder and her fingers over it in Vegas so it looks better.
GX 20 - A Strapping Issue #…42? I Forget (WIP)
So, luckily, 20′s animators were mostly good about Burstlady’s strap, except for this scene (and another quick one when she’s fusing with Featherman near the end, but the dub helped with that one). Her right strap’s supposed to go into a cuff on her right arm, while she’s supposed to have a cuff on her left arm too. Here’s my attempt at fixing it, and I’d love to hear some feedback, lol. I think I got the “strap to cuff” part well enough, but I think the left cuff might need… something. I think the lighting from her fire/the love bubble is what’s doing it. For the fingers, I’m going to do some better masking when I throw it into Vegas, but here’s how it looks so far out of Photoshop. After some thinking just now, I kinda want to make the right strap a bit less connected to the cuff so it’s consistent with how she looks when summoned; that way I don’t have to tackle that one too! ^^;

@akameniseis @xjudai, what do you guys think? Worst-case, if you have some time, would you be able to take a crack at her left cuff, @xjudai?
GX Finalized!20 Progress Report - In Which What Even
Just a preview of my favorite thing about revisiting this episode, since it’s been over a week since my last update about 20. Enjoyed working with Burstlady’s sass, too haha. I finished the script earlier; I’ll quality-check it in the morning, do a few quick fixes, and then encode it to have it up by the end of this weekend!
Bonus:

[Also, stay tuned, ‘cause after 20′s done, I’ll finally get around to a fun announcement. :)]
