Like most of what I do in Photoshop I just kind of throw random shit at the canvas and see what sticks, but generally I use Add Noise set to a very low amount, with uniform distribution and the monochromatic box ticked,and then apply a very slight gaussian blur.

here’s a comparison of the edited and unedited versions, zoomed in a little to make the changes more obvious because they’re really subtle. But that’s what you want!

It’s kind of weird to try and intentionally add compression artifacts to something but I do think it helps edits blend in when you’re working with less than pristine video. If you had nice Blu-ray rips to work with I don’t think any of this would be necessary, but with DVD quality it helps.

(as for the actual edits you want from me, I’ll get them done tonight or tomorrow morning!)

Yeah, it totally helped; I applied your settings to the text layer and got these; the noise/blur’d one should be the one on top, lol.  You’re right, it’s definitely very subtle, but it does look a bit more blended in, so I’ll be sure to do the same for other text tweaks like this.  What does the monochromatic box do for it?

Yeah, especially since there’s a low amount of compression artifacts around already; I would love it if GX got a blu-ray release to make all these easier haha. (Sounds good, thanks again! I’ll start on the script meanwhile, lol.)

I’m really tired and can’t words so here’s a visual explanation lmao. bottom half is monochromatic noise, top half… isn’t.

Here are the edited frames for you! They don’t look fantastic on a dark background, but those rough edges aren’t visible on the light pink background you’re going to be putting them on and the parts that’ll actually be going over text are neater.

Ahhh haha, I see! So monochromatic is basically a bit sharper, and it’s a lot of the same color; hence… monochromatic.  D’oh. ^^; That would be the better noise to use for this, definitely, instead of noise that’s all over color-wise.  Thanks for that!

And thanks for the edits! I just threw them in, and yeah, the rough edges were fine in the video, lol.  Her hair did jump a bit more noticeably up by the top than it originally did from how it was cut, but I just masked in the top of her head and feathered it so it blended into the slightly tweaked background, so we’re good to go there. Great work! :)

GX 20 - She’s a WHAT?! (WIP)

Getting some work done on 20, finally! The script’s ready to time, so I’m just getting my edits ready, and I wanted to translate this as it comes up behind Rei.  I was going to try using Aegisub for the text, after making the full pan and having it blanked, but with how the background pans behind her, there’s no way to extend the text past the standard frame there, lol.  So, that second pic is the full pan without Rei in the way, after a lot of splicing.  I cleaned it up and blanked it in Photoshop (bless u content-aware), then added the text and figured out how to add borders to it haha (look at me, I’m lerning, @akameniseis!).  And I thought Comic Sans would be appropriate here. :P Didn’t make the border as think as it originally so the text spacing wasn’t too wonky.

Just have to recreate the pan and mask Rei over the text, and this should be good to go!

Realized I missed an instance or two of Burstlady’s strap missing in GX 18, so I thought I’d see how the dub handled it.

I am not disappoint.

And here’s the fix I just whipped up; I’d appreciate people letting me know whether or not it’s too noticeable, haha.

I’d darken the outline on her wrist where it crosses over your edit, and maybe make it a little thinner? That outline is super visible right now, but the strap looks great!

Thanks for the pointers! You’re right, that outline did look a bit thick haha.  Here’s an update! I had to try messing with it by putting the new wrist outline on a new layer since I was smart enough to put the entire outline on one layer. ^^; What do you think?

GX 19 - A Strapping Issue (WIP)

This, uh, doesn’t look too badly edited, does it? XD; Trying to get the hang of drawing things like her missing shoulder strap in Photoshop so I can do some of the work with these fixes. @xjudai, tagging you in case you might be able to critique or help a bit! lol

GX 19: A Few Cards Short (WIP #1)

Spent most of the day editing away my anxiety for primary results, lol. onto next week it is I’m knocking out my fixes before starting on the script, and between the three fixes I had already done while working on 18′s preview (two shown in the first and last caps) and the ones I just knocked out today, I singled out 15 fixes to work on, 90% card-related because I’m a detailed dork. I love that he has a Magic Card in his Monster Zone just ‘cause (and that he doesn’t fall off his cliff during that ACTION SCENE), but I still don’t get how Winged Kuriboh’s card was just cut off there.  gg card guys!

GX 18 - Update!

So, I finally wrapped it up, and I’m now encoding the episode.  Main reason why I’ve been quiet the last few days, since I actually spent most of my time on it this week doing fixes/throwing in translation edits (my thanks as always to @akameniseis for taking the time to help; the text on that Yugi flier up there is their handiwork!), while I knocked out the script over the last day-and-a-half, then did a few more fixes I thought I should handle lol (notably, another “card in ATK mode when it should be DEF” one).  I’ll detail the fixes when I post the episode’s link (all together, about 6), but here, have this sneak peek! I should have it up tomorrow. :)

Prepping to work on subbing 18 when

At least they bothered to redraw his hair where they erased the text, I guess. I think maybe it would have been better if they hadn’t, though, if that’s the best they can do.

Yeahh, they probably could’ve made the outline less thick, but it was a good start lol.  I couldn’t tell what they were going for elsewhere, it’s like they were changing the background, but then also blurring the text; as it pans up, the motion blur goes everywhere in the poster.

I’m surprised they didn’t just change the background and maybe use some stock art of him, lol.
