  • GX 79->80 Original Preview Clip: Enter Despairland (FINAL)

    After 84 years… it’s finally done 😤

As mentioned in this post, I’ve spent most of the past month-and-a-half (in between work and other things) on editing this preview clip shown at the end of episode 79′s original TV airing in 2006 for ep. 80 (the Alice in Despairland episode, which turns out different from what this clip would have you believe) to remove the Sponsor text in the middle of the screen to make it textless for use in my finalized subbed episode. (I wanted to remove the “Today’s Best Card Just After This!” side bars as well, but given the low quality of the original clip in the panning shot of Alice at the window and how her hair blends into the night sky behind her, I felt it’d have been too hard to pull off.) I wanted to preserve this for my subs rather than creating a new preview clip, since it’s an interesting look at how the concept for episode 80 was seemingly changed within weeks of 79′s production (I’m a bit surprised it aired without this preview clip being changed lol).

And with the editing all done, I wanted to throw up this quick comparison video with a breakdown under the cut here–this video first shows the original clip as aired on TV (with my subs there for the sponsor bit), then my edit retaining the side bars but blanking the middle (for use with the Japanese DVDRip I’ll be releasing), and then my edit with solid-blue bars overlaid on the originals so I could slap my English “Just After This!” text on (for use with the hardsub).  Enjoy your Alice nightmare

And a huge thanks to @popflythesky for their help in making this happen 🙌🏽–more on that below.

  • GX 79->80 (WIP #2): Enter Despairland

Following up on this post, I wanted to drop a quick update now that I’ve been editing this for about 2-3 weeks so far with Sony Vegas and Photoshop. (Original video here for comparison.) Off the top, because of how hard it seemed to me to try and edit the sides of Alice’s hair in the later panning shot at the window to remove the blue sidebars (her hair blends too much into the night sky behind her given the video quality), I opted to just focus on the TV sponsor text in the middle; may as well keep the sidebars for the Japanese-text clip I’ll include with 79′s DVDRip upon release, while I’ve added these solid sidebars so I could add the English text for the final product.  Special thanks to @popflythesky who very graciously offered to help with this (🙏🏽🙂)–more on that down below.

  • GX 80 (WIP): Enter Despairland

Really would love to one day know the backstory behind why the clip we’re shown in the TV airing of GX episode 79 as a preview to 80 (Misawa researching the Alice in Despairland card to find this Alice [remarkably different from the Alice we’d ultimately get] right outside his window) was never actually included in episode 80 proper…

…but until then, as I’m working on finalizing my 77-79 subs, I did want to try and retain this clip during the “Just After This!” bit before 79′s card showcase, and to do so, I’m cleaning it up to remove the Japanese sponsor text along the middle of the shot–I originally wanted to try to remove the side “Just After This!” bars as well to make it fully textless (as was done with some help back with the Manjoume clip featured at the end of episode 24 that wasn’t in 25), but even if I asked for some help on that, I felt that–given the way Alice’s hair waves in the pan shot here, the lack of detail as the pan goes on and the hair blends into the night sky a bit, and the way the sky still moves a little behind her–that’d be near impossible.  Alas.  So, rather than giving up and just making a new “Just After This!” clip, I’m doing the next best thing to try and preserve this by just focusing on the Sponsor text and using solid bars on the side instead of the usual transparent ones.  Looks okay so far!

  • My Subbed!GX Stream Link Masterpost!

    kaiowut99:

    image

All right, so with everything up-and-loaded over on Cloudy Videa, the downside is that they don’t have a playlist function to organize everything like on Dailymotion.  Enter this post, where you’ll find all the links sorted out by seasons! I’ll be updating it as I upload my finalized Season 1+ episodes in the coming weeks, so check the original post periodically or keep an eye on the notes for any reblogs of it I do so you’re aware of any updates.  Also, keep in mind that you can download these from NAC, since I post all my downloads there!

If you would rather download, you can also use this torrent set up by rhodanum with all of my subbed episodes, including my updated Season 3 subs (which you won’t find in other torrents; does not include my finalized Season 1+ stuff, which you can find on NAC’s download forum): [removed because Kickass has been sent to the stars]

Also, Crunchyroll has begun to roll out official GX subs as of 8/1/15! This is excellent news for the fandom, and while you’re more than welcome to continue watching my subs, be sure to give their subs at least one watch to show support for the official release.  You can also just have their video playing on a muted tab while you watch my version!

To keep the html’d list consistent, season breaks are denoted like this; arc breaks are in italics.

UPDATE (04/15 & 17/2022): Finalized!Episodes 1-76 now on the list, with 75 and 76 newly finalized; finalizing Season 2′s now underway, so stay tuned as we revisit these! As of 4/15, I’ve also re-re-finalized episodes 1-76 so that they’re actually final now (you can read my previous re-finalizing details here if you’re curious)–this last hopefully re-finalizing run involved me deciding to use “tribute” over “sacrifice” for the dueling term and replacing it accordingly while also correcting an Ending Credits typo with the name of Chronos’s Seiyuu, though I did revise a line or two here and there. (Also slowed down the gif below since I’ve seen folks tag it due to the flashing; thanks again to ynminor for providing it a while back! Also removed the torrent link because the site’s now dead; may upload a new one at some point.)

(Also, I’ve created a supplement to this post linking to the finalized episodes’ release posts on my blog–these will contain Translation Notes that it’d be worth knowing [also on-screen translations that were done] or Animation Fixes I’ve worked on; if none were done, I didn’t link them. Just in case you’re curious about any episode release notes!)

If you see any busted links, shoot me an ask or DM and I’ll fix it up! Make sure you check the original post first, though; I may have already fixed it. :P

UPDATE (4/17/22): Casually reblogged the revised list a few days ago (see previous reblog notes under the cut below), and since then, I’ve also created a supplement to the original list that links to the finalized episodes’ ongoing release posts–since these list out any Translation Notes [also on-screen translations that were done] or Animation Fixes that I did, I figure they’d be nice for folks to have direct links to, rather than going through my blog’s “my subs” tag with the posts in reverse chronological order.

So, all the new 1-76 links in the OP should work, but as always, drop me an ask or DM if one doesn’t work! 🙏🏽 (If you’ve previously reblogged the masterpost for reference, I’d reblog the updated original post now, since I’ve deleted the older encodes from my Videa account.)

  • My Subbed!GX Stream Link Masterpost! (Release Post Links)

Due to a limit in the amount of links I can apparently have in text posts [news to me], I’m creating this post as a supplement to my Subbed!GX Masterpost to allow for folks to look at the release posts for my finalized episodes as I work on them, instead of loading my “my subs” blog tag and having to scroll through things in reverse chronological order.  This should allow you to read any Translation Notes that it’d be worth knowing [also on-screen translations that were done], or lists of Animation Fixes I’ve worked on, just in case you’re curious about any episode release notes, and I’ll be updating this as I finalize the rest of my episodes.

The release posts are linked in [ ]s next to each episode’s title, with the brackets noting if Animation Fixes or Translation Notes (or both) are included.  Episodes where neither apply will still have their release post linked anyway.

As with the main list, to keep the html’d list consistent, season breaks are denoted like this; arc breaks are in italics.

Current Update (7/4/23): Realizing I’ve kinda neglected this, lol; finalized episodes 1-98′s Release Posts now linked, with 93-98′s newly added.  As of 93, I split out the Animation Fixes breakdowns from the Release Posts, so I’ll be linking both for folks.

Previous Update (4/2/23): Finalized episodes 1-92′s Release Posts now linked, with 91 and 92′s newly added.

GX Finalized-Subs!52 (Revisited): Gotta Replace Your Cards… Right?

So I just re-finalized my episode 52 subs because CamsterdamSPguy on YouTube tipped me off to missing this error in my last pass-through.  After Ryou’s Treasure from a Different Dimension makes them draw, Judai originally draws Fusion Undone/De-Fusion with Miracle Fusion, but 1) he used it a turn before, and 2) on his next turn, in a move that exhausts his hand, it’s Fusion Recovery that he uses.

The shots from the Japanese version above are from my fix of the error, where I made a Fusion Recovery proxy and applied it in AfterEffects, masking back the original card’s black border around it to blend it in and Judai’s thumb above it.  The dub, meanwhile, misses this and dubifies De-Fusion, but… they do so a bit too awkwardly that I’m surprised it hasn’t been touched up at all with how this episode’s been re-released now multiple times lol (TV airing, original DVD release, Cinedigm DVD, now Crunchyroll upload, by my count [and probably missing some]).

GX Finalized-Subs!75 - Field Trip Sights (Final)

For my finalized episode 75 subs, I translated the front cover of the town guidebooks held by Shou and Kenzan in the eight scenes it’s visible in.  I first blanked it and applied the translations in the second-to-last shot it’s in–the closeup as the two show them to Sugoroku, which I also used for 75′s preview in ep. 74–then isolated it to manipulate into the other scenes, mainly using AfterEffects’s CC Power Pin effect and then masking in the right side of the original cover (with the landmark photos, but above the bottom “Legendary Duelists’ Stomping Grounds” text) on top to make it blend in.

(Bonus: little tidbit I noticed with those first two scenes)

(Had this in my drafts to post up over a week ago, but things coming up and all, lol.)

So, in 75, there’s a scene after Sugoroku goes missing and Judai and co split up to find him where we pan over to the mountains Mizuchi is based in, and she’s chanting something that leads to the Monarch barrier around Domino Town that Air Hummingbird clues Judai into shortly after.

When I originally handled the ep years ago, I forget where I’d read it–a Janime summary or a forum post at the time, possibly–but it had seemed to be old Chinese, so I included this in the episode:

(Something I like to avoid with my subs unless I have to, like I thought I did here, lol.)

Working on a fix to this error with the red orb on Kenzan’s Disk not being lit up as Shou worries about his summoning Element Saurus; the first is the original frame (the orb being drawn as unlit happens over three zoom-out frames of Kenzan’s movement, held for three frames each [so nine total–what I did is I just edited the third zoomed-out frames then re-zoomed them]), second image is my edit (done by just screen-layering a lit-up red layer around the orb [color-dropped from the third image]), and the third image [unedited] is his Disk as it appears once it’s lit up properly.

But really just sharing this because

[Also, just an update: both episodes 75 and 76′s scripts are fully revised; just doing a couple quick-ish fixes for errors I picked up on as I worked on 76, then I’ll quality-check ‘em.  Should probably be ready this weekend, if not sooner; depends how much I do on this week off from work, lol.]

  • Little thing I noticed while editing in the translated Domino guidebooks that Shou and Kenzan have early in GX 75:

These two frames are from two different scenes–the first is as Ed first approaches the group and Misawa asks him about Saiou, while the second is Misawa noticing the others up and left him behind [poor guy]–and while it’s a recycled shot, you’ll notice that everyone’s in the same spot on both frames; the only difference is that the background was shifted a little in the second shot.  Maybe to differentiate it a little as a recycled shot, but hard to tell, lol.

Did make it easier for me to slip my edit into the second shot, though–all it took was first masking the ground behind Kenzan from after he’s invisible and then layering my edit on top of it.  This makes it so as I fiddled with the transparency/opacity of the edit to blend it in as he blinks in and out of the frame, it was “fading” into the background, versus “fading” into the Japanese shot and having the Japanese text on the guidebooks slip through.

Altogether, I’ll be editing it into eight different scenes, and with this one, I’ve done the first two; should knock out the others, and probably the handful of card errors I picked up on during the Tag Duel, this weekend~

GX Finalized-Subs!74 Preview: The Spirit of It All

    [73′s Preview]

(Quick little preview since it’s taken a bit long to get 73 and 74 finished up; both episodes are all done and uploaded, just have to post ‘em up tomorrow! But did want to show this scene off just because I liked how Judai makes a pure case for Rose seeing her Prince “Spirits,” and also seeing that Manjoume still has his Spirit senses [I know in 82 after his duel with Misawa is when he seems to lose that power, so I’m curious to revisit that].

Also, the art throughout this episode is great–it’s a Kyoung Soo Lee animation team episode–but love those side shots of Judai.  Think this is around the point where their art-directed episodes start to look really good, too [the last one before this was 69 and 63 before that].)

Just finished working on the animation fixes I picked up on for 73 and 74, so as I’m working on 74′s preview for 75, I wanted to take a crack at translating these guidebooks Shou and Kenzan carry in a few scenes early in the episode, since one of the clips comes up in the preview (as they and Judai come up on Sugoroku’s Game Shop).  Thought I’d start here as it’s the clearest shot of them and then I’ll retroactively add it into the other shots they show up in.

  • Final title I’m using for episode 74 in my finalized subs–I remember reading that this title’s layout is a callback to another anime, but the name escapes me now, lol.

The three lines are referencing the cards that Princess Rose uses, but the puns aren’t quite as easy to get across in English while trying to stick close to the Japanese card names as I like to–that’s why I opted for the TCG’s “Treeborn Frog” over “Reborn Frog” like I did before, since the “tree” and “reborn” pun is there (though the kanji in its name make it a pun on “underworld” (yomi) and “to be reborn” (yomigaeru) while “gaeru” is a reference to the Frog archetype).

Ikikaeru (punning off イキカエル “ikikaeru”/”to restore to life”) is the one Magic Card she uses to summon a Tadpole in her Cemetery, which the TCG/Crunchy name “Frog Resurrection,” but 1) it has “kaeru” and not “gaeru” in its name so it’s not part of the Frog archetype but the supporting “Toad” one, and 2) it stands out not being named “x frog/toad,” lol.  I had “Living Frog” before but went with “Living Toad” given the Toad archetype thing.

Death Frog is just referencing her Death/Des Frog, so that’s easy.

And so, you get this title that’s a bit of a life cycle thing, haha.
