Getting work started on 73 and spotted this animation error where… for some reason they forgot to draw the Zone parts on Saiou’s Disk, lol. That part is admittedly in view for only a few frames, as it’s at the start of the upward-panning shot where he orders The Chariot to attack Kenzan’s Dark Tyranno (about 11m42s into the A_U DVDrip). I’ve fixed some Disk errors before–the one with Taizan’s in episode 17 comes to mind–so I figured this should be a bit in my wheelhouse. And… actually wasn’t that tough to pull off, lol.
There unfortunately wasn’t another shot in the episode with either Saiou or Kenzan holding their Disks in that position, so I went back to other episodes by this animation team (it’s a Chi Man Park-team episode) and then eventually just looked for similarly positioned Disks in other episodes regardless, stumbling onto one of Orgene/Ojin in 84:
So what I did in Photoshop was, I spliced out the two halves of this Disk and repositioned them to fit next to the middle orb on Saiou’s, erasing the background and rotating/slightly resizing as needed. After that, I had to draw on the rest of the fourth Monster Zone and M/T Zone that were offscreen, applying an outline to the Zone and then to that part of the Disk itself. Finally, in a layer I made Screen-blended, I painted over the middle of the Disk using the bright red of the orb, spreading it a bit over both Zones 2 and 3 and then erasing the middle (since the orb’s already there); I then did a big Gaussian Blur to make the light fade over those two Zones–that way, the brightness from the orb on Saiou’s Disk extends a little before fading.
Hopefully this looks good as a start–I think it came out well, though I may look it over and maybe tweak the left side, tweak the coloring to match a little better, or extend the orb light glow. Or maybe it might work for the quick couple of frames it’s visible in. 🤔 Then I just have to add Saiou’s two face-down cards in Zones 2 and 3 and The Chariot in Monster Zone 4.

I drew on the face-downs in Photoshop using one of the cards in his hand as reference (under the screen-light layer) and applying some Gaussian Blurring and Noise as needed to help them blend in, then made a Chariot proxy and applied it in AfterEffects. To work it into the footage, I threw it into Sony Vegas and re-panned it downward, masking in some of the middle orb’s edges back into the shot to restore some detail. All that added in, we get:
Like I said, it is just visible for a couple frames, but I thought it’d be better to have it fixed than not if I’m able to for the sake of completeness, lol.

Having just finished this episode up, wanted to briefly compare to the dub to see if anything was cut, and this exchange just… oof. Up to this point, I already re-heard (it’s been a while since I’d seen this stretch of episodes dubbed) the odd angle they went with framing the setup to the duel being a “date with Alexis at the planetarium” (when originally they were literally just randomly approached as they minded their business lol) which replaced the “sneeze superstition” and hypothetical flirty girl scenario from Shou, Judai’s worrying about Asuka/Manjoume/all the weird White guys turning into worry about just Alexis and then lack of dating experience…, Tyranno made to forget that Syrus used Cyber Summon Blaster against him (since Kenzan naturally recognizes it), and Jaden just having Burstinatrix use her attack on Tetran when Judai made a point to say it’s to take out one of its shield (I just really like the way they went about the BES cards’s shields thing like a game lol)–along with errors like Bastion saying Lorenzo can’t [Normal-]Summon due to Boss Rush… no longer being on the field (Boss Rush kept him from doing it, which is why he wanted MST/Cyclone lol)–but this was… groan
So, after the bit about saving the best aces for last from Judai/Jaden (which was kept; don’t mind me keeping in the Italian accent a bit),
Lorenzo: “Hey, I don’t need yer advice! No offense, kid, but I’ve met cannolis that are tougha dan you!”
Jaden: “Cannolis?! That’s not cool–now, you got me hungry! Now, how about we end this and get some lunch! In fact, I’ve got just the card to do it–so, good thing it’s my turn now!”
Lorenzo: *shocked gasp*

It’s more of Ryusei’s character there showing, playing into Judai’s belief that no card is worth calling a runt which works well to demonstrate why his comparing shooter games to dueling doesn’t work, and given Ryusei’s revelation earlier that he’s just in the cult to become a pro, it’s a good insight from Judai that Ryusei’s being a duplicitous “runt.” Which all gets replaced so we get the “let’s end this and lunch” line that hilariously doesn’t match Jaden’s face there, and Lorenzo also somehow being shocked that it’s Jaden’s turn, lol.
Judai’s thing is he’s more happy-go-lucky, but he also picks up on a lot and can offer some points of insight in moments like this (so much so that his using “profound” earlier catches everyone off guard, except Kenzan). Jaden’s written to be happy-go-lucky too, but it’s played up more, and while some of those insightful moments are kept well enough (like his heroic “save the best for last” thing here), we get things like this which feel like a real change in character and adds to the feeling that the dub can be a totally different show. Which on its own, sure, can be enjoyable–but coming in as someone who wants to see the original treated well because it’s so good, it just comes across as unneeded to me. (and he sounds like abridged!Goku here lol)
GX Finalized-Subs!71 (WIP) - To Confirm Fate… [ft newly-White Asuka]
Mainly posting this scene as a teaser while I prep my finalized subs because
while we really should have had an extra scene or two of Momoe and Junko (and Ayukawa) lamenting that Asuka’s been roped into the Society of Light, it’s nice they included the three here watching her.

GX Finalized-Subs!71 (WIP) - “The Former Shooter Game Champion”
Getting work on my finalized subs for episode 71 underway, and as part of it, something I wanted to do was translate the file Asuka–now with the Society of Light–pulls out about Ryusei (Lorenzo in the dub) here. Took me almost a week to do with a few hours after work here/there, a few hours yesterday, and then mostly finishing touches today. And this was kind of interesting, since I had to brush up a bit about older shooter/shooting games for context; 71 has some gaming references peppered in, between Ryusei using the BES cards based on the
Gradius game in his duel with Judai and even little things here like the references to Space Invaders with the Nagoya Shot/Attack (”名古屋打ち/nagoya uchi;” a bug in the 1978 game, so named because it was discovered in Nagoya, Japan, lol). So all told, Ryusei here has some credibility to back up the claim in the episode that he’s a game champ. (I’m assuming he won a shooter tournament Kaiba might’ve hosted at some point.) Just got to the halfway point with 69′s script and thought I’d show this little scene off. It’s interesting because of how Napoleon throws the phrase “がってん承知の助" into his line above–while looking it up, I got the gist that the phrase basically makes a name out of its “understood!/leave it to me!” meaning (sorta in a “no way Jose” kinda way?), as well as it being a more Edo-era saying in Japan. I saw the Crunchy team went with “eventual lemon tea” which… I don’t quite get how they got there; maybe going for a slight “lemon tea”/”leave it to me” pun, but seems like a slight stretch, and nothing in the kanji sticks out as tea-related, lol. (My original line here was more played-straight and just translated to “I’m already aware of that,” but it doesn’t quite work with the confused/groaning looks on Kenzan et al’s faces.)
Because of that “name-ification” of the phrase and its semi-dated reference, I thought the nod to LITB (as a show I’m sure most of us millennials/Gen-Xers might know from childhood) might be a good way to get it across, lol; for those more Japanese-savvy, would that be a good adaptation? I kinda like it myself, but it’s not too final yet. (The dub didn’t bother with it, really–Bonaparte talks about his “master plan” which confuses everyone, and when asked for thoughts, Jaden’s just all “this duel’s sweet!” which, okay sure lol.)
Also went with “the VP’s got jokes!” for Judai’s “he’s funny” line since he’s in a jovial/”just wanna have fun” mood most of the episode despite the stakes for the Red dorm lol (and “VP” as “Vice-Principal” shorthand lets the line register well while onscreen, imo, along with being a nod to the “VP Napoleon” shorthand I use in the credits).
Finishing up some work on the translated preview in 69 for episode 70, and… I’m remembering how much I hated the Japanese title placement for this episode when I went through it a while back, lol. I always try to replicate the original placement when I slap my translations on, but… kind of a tiny bit hard to make this one look perfect in English. The middle shot shows my attempt at it
(which on second thought as I post, I may stick with actually), while the latter is me messing around with a position similar to an older title for the Judai VS Misawa or Amnael duels in Season 1. (I thought about deviating and using one line for simplicity, but again, replication and all.)
Kind of amuses me how both versions of this scene don’t get away error-free, lol. In the original, you just have Hero Kid misidentified as a Normal Monster (odd, since 99%’s S1 OP shows it as an Effect Monster, as it was when used by Judai in 25 & 26 against Manjoume), while the dub keeps that error, but then also 1) reverts Edgeman from his OCG art back to his first anime artwork, 2) replaces Tempester with Fusion Failure/Mispolymerization, 3) thinks the Wind-Attribute Featherman/Avian coming in from the bottom left is another copy of Fire-Attribute Burstlady, and 4) of course in totally-out-of-left-field fashion replaces Dark Catapulter with Yellow Gadget???
This then gets flashbacked-to twice (that I’ve noticed so far) in episodes 67 and 105 (there, as part of a clipshow), and the errors are still there. Though at least as of the 67 version of the shot, the dub got Avian right, lol.
Phew, finally finished re-finalizing my finalized GX stuff so far!
Over the last few weeks well I guess months–initially while I waited for some potential editing help for 65, then [once I canned the last fix I’d planned; sorry to those I may have slightly annoyed with my casual reblogs about it] just to get it all done while in Rome before double-releasing 65 and 66–I’ve been giving my scripts one final look-through to fix any consistency or formatting issues with my newer stuff (things like my starting to use “Fusion Undone” as De-Fusion’s translated name before accidentally going back to “Fusion Cancel” or turning “Miss Asuka” back to “Asuka-san” since I’d meant to use that whenever “Asuka-sama” was used, or the way I’d italicize contractions or capitalize things), and also to sort of go and do things I should’ve done initially (like translating Daitokuji’s nyas into meows, the logic being that it’s what we’d hear in English anyway; hopefully this is one that goes over well?). Basically just to cross them off my list so I don’t go back to them at all. The plan is also to work on new finalized MKV softsubs that I’ll release on NAC for those who’d like ‘em, since Zeratul (who’d provided them before) hasn’t in a long while, and once I do them for 1-66, they’ll be a thing going forward.
While I was at it, I applied some other animation/footage fixes to things I hadn’t picked up on in my initial finalizing run-through as I started doing them, or polished a couple that I did. Some might wonder “why put in the effort for quick shots or at all no one cares,” but as I’ve mentioned before, as someone who loves GX with some [I think good?] skills using Photoshop/video editing and an eye for detail, I figured if I have time to improve it for people (especially those who might notice the same errors I did) where the staff didn’t take the chance to do so on the DVDs (where they usually would), then why not? (I was actually inspired to do it by KaiserNeko doing the same for DBZ during DBZ Abridged.) The fixes I work on are done for both my hardsubs and the DVDRips I release with the scripts over on NAC, and there’s a thread there with the original DVDRips I work off of as well, in case anyone doesn’t like them (most/all of my finalized Season 1 scripts were re-timed for them by someone there, but I’ll take some time out to do it myself too now that I’ve re-finalized them), along with the CR subs which I’ve said should be shown love too. I’ll list these new fixes out below by each episode, for anyone super curious about the details; some are kind of interesting, lol. (Did my best to format it so it’s readable, too, lol.)
So, yeah–keep an eye out for the links to actually-final 1-64 on my stream masterpost to be updated along with 65 and 66 once I post them (probably tomorrow), I’ll be updating the links in my NAC thread to the hardsubs and scripts I’ve re-finalized along with any DVDRips updated with the fixes below, and as I get work going on 67+ (which I’ve started a bit of) I’ll work on batches of the softsub MKVs for folks. For people looking forward to my 65 and 66, really appreciate the patience the past couple of months; hoping to work on some double-releases to make up some time.
Looking for a little help on an animation edit I’d like to work on for my finalized episode 65 subs–I’m trying to correct an error where they showed Mad Dog Inukai’s Multiple Slime in Defense Mode despite it being in Attack Mode, entailing a few frames’ worth of editing to remove the Slime (as I’ve already masked it out to slap onto the fixed frames), so you’d just need to replicate the floor and cage bars over it.
I was in talks with someone who I hoped would be able to help, but unfortunately between their work schedule and maintaining their YouTube channel, that’s fallen through.
Details here; if you’re good at Photoshop/etc and might be able to help with this, it would be much appreciated–I’d credit you in the episode’s end credits, but can also commission the help if need be. Shoot me a DM if interested; would be great to make this fix happen if possible. There wouldn’t be a huge rush, though if you’d be able to work on it within the month or sooner, that’d be great, as the wait trying to work with my contact has delayed this episode for over three months now, lol. (The wait hasn’t been too bad, since I’ve been able to get a jump on giving my finalized episodes thus far a final revision [and I’m up to the Seven Stars episodes now], but yeah)
So, I’ve been working on some of the other edits I’m doing for GX 65, and for one of them, I hoped to fix the animation error that happens here as Multiple Slime is attacked by Ryou’s Chimeratech Overdragon; it’s in Attack Mode (and Mad Dog Inukai takes damage after it’s destroyed accordingly), yet has its card under it as if it were in Defense Mode. I figured this would entail redrawing the tiles under it, clone-stamping some of the gate behind it, applying a little drop shadow, and working it back into the footage as I mask Multiple Slime back in over my edits (see photo #2). Problem is, as the beam of light comes closer, the tiles light up, and I hoped to light up the edited tile I did, but I can’t seem to figure out a good way to do it (since the frame and my tile edit move to the upper right as the beam comes in, my edit would have a hard stop at its edge unless I also tried to apply it in a later frame, but then comes the lighting issue)–let alone the explosion happening and trying to figure out how to light the tiles up there accordingly…
I don’t suppose anyone might have some tips on trying to do this in Photoshop? Or would someone who’s skilled enough and has some time on their hands be able to take a crack at removing the card themselves if I offered the frames to edit? I would probably just need the tiles redrawn and blended in, a drop shadow to be put under Multiple Slime like I’ve done above, and the gate recreated behind it, but you’d be welcome to do your own thing; I’ve already masked out Multiple Slime to add back onto the edit, so no need to worry about that. And because the shot only moves to the upper right (no zoom or anything), it should be easy to just duplicate whatever edit is done earlier into the later frames and move it accordingly. Worst-case, I’d probably just have to leave this error as-is, but it’d be nice to fix it if doable (especially since the dub didn’t catch this and also put their dubified card in Defense Mode under it 🙃).
(It’s funny because I did the reverse of this back in GX 30 with adding a Defense-Mode card under Judai’s erroneously-in-Attack-Mode Tempester, though I didn’t also have an explosion to deal with then, lol.)
Just bringing this back because unfortunately, my contact who I hoped would be able to work on this edit won’t be able to between work and managing his content on YouTube–would anyone be available to try and work on this? I really would like to get this edit applied to finish episode 65, but if no one’s able to, I suppose I’ll just leave it. As I mentioned above, I’d just need a handful of frames edited as noted. Please shoot me a DM if you might be able to and I can send you the frames so you’re able to decide if it’s doable; I’d be crediting you in the episode’s end credits, but I can also commission it if need be.
