There are probably a million different reasons that this would never happen but imagine. Imagine if the original series of YGO ever got another English dub, done properly. Like an uncut dub, with a new voice cast (as much as I love Dan Green and Eric Stuart I could live with that if it meant an uncut dub and proper DVD release).
And it could be released in like remastered high def dual audio DVD/Blurays. Oh my god. I would buy the crap out of that.
Like what Sailor Moon is getting now. With it being the 20th anniversary of YGO and them announcing a new movie with Yugi and Kaiba, and apparently they’re going to be playing remastered episodes of the original series in February in Japan…
Siiiigh. I can dream.
Actually they do have one uncut version that is with the same voice cast but it’s really hard to find. Funimation stepped in to do it and it has the correct translations, uneditted scenes and Japanese music. I think they did a few seasons even but 4Kids choose to stop it because they said there “wasn’t a high enough demand.” And then pulled it off shelves and stopped selling it saying it would be temporary but ended up doing it permanently all because they didn’t want it competing with and outselling their dub.
You can probably find it online somewhere but I tried awhile back and could only find like the first episode.
They actually barely managed to get nine episodes done, let alone a few seasons lol. Especially since these DVDs only had 3 episodes a disc. They did plan out a fourth release, but it got scrapped and that’s the excuse that came in. I still wish they went up to DOMA; it would’ve been nice to hear Wayne Grayson’s Dartz speaking his original lines. Dude acted the part nicely.
Thing is, the uncut DVDs were nice and all, but the acting in them was really stilted at times. "Yoooou muuuust haaaave cheated!“ in episode 1 comes to mind. The voiceover for the intro narration was also inconsistent, which bugged the hell outta me lol. I think they really got themselves ready and steady to go (shot) by episode 9; that one was a great watch. With more time, it would’ve been a solid production.
It’s a shame it hasn’t been picked back up in the… what, 8-9 years since? It’d be great if Konami used the DM remaster as a bonus reason to get the series redubbed, like the chance presented itself for DBZ:Kai. Bonus points if they used an LA cast, just so we’d get Megan Hollingshead back as Mai (or if she can come back otherwise, by all means; I’d still like Dunstan as Pegasus lol). I’m still holding out a lot of extra hope for DM to get the FMA:Brotherhood treatment, though. The manga should really be accurately readapted one day. Who knows when it’ll be…
If anyone does want to check out those episodes, I have them on my laptop at home; I wouldn’t mind uploading them to my Cloudy channel. :)
