So discord has reminded me of one of my least favourite Yu-Gi-Oh! GX dub changes.
Making Yubel female? Not the end of the world I can, live with it.
Weird accents for characters? I’ll suffer through them.
But this? This makes me straight up uncomfortable.
In season 2 Judai and co meet Solomon Muto while in Domino City and he basically tags along for the entirety of their trip. It’s revealed that he wrote and put together a guide book about the events of Battle City and published it and more or less takes the kids on a tour. He’s a man well into his late 70′s or even early 80′s, but he still keeps up with the kids and is actually sort of mentor-like and helpful.
So what did the dub do?
Lol he’s a senile old man.
That’s it, he’s reduced to a bumbling, perpetually confused old man who’s like ‘where am I?’ and ‘what’s happening’ half the time, is convinced that Yugi ‘went to the store 3 years ago and never came back’ (this line is not in the sub, he just says that Yugi’s ‘probably out having an adventure with his friends’) and really seems like someone who should probably be under the care and watch of someone rather than being left alone. Basically, he comes off as someone with severe dementia(which also has the side effect of making Yugi look like a neglectful grandson, just leaving his grandpa alone in such a state).
And as someone who had a grandparent with dementia, let me tell you, that is REALLY uncomfortable to watch. It’s not ‘lol funny’, it’s squirm in my seat because it’s uncomfortable and upsetting.
gotta complain here man i HATE this idea that any episode of a show that doesn’t obviously drive the main plot forward is “filler”
that isn’t filler. filler is goku clenching his asscheeks for one thousand episodes because they are unwilling to let the frieza arc fucking finish. filler is extending every action as long as possible or shoving in a bunch of extra crap because you need more time for some reason. sometimes filler is good enough to be a real arc of the show and the fact it was meant as filler is negligible (black rose arc of utena, anyone?), but it usually has a noticeable feeling of artificially lengthening running time.
filler is NOT planned character development through lower action episodes that don’t obviously move the plot forward. good episodic shows that were planned well don’t have a lot of filler. each episode has development for the characters, which is also VERY IMPORTANT for the story. episodes without a lot of action are not automatically filler. episodes without big plot points are not automatically skippable.
slow, steady character development is the reason that we build connections to characters. without good character development, big action scenes have like zero impact. a good action scene relies on investment in the characters involved, otherwise it’s just noise. filler and slower paced episodes are NOT!! the same thing!!
I honestly did not expect that from a shota character in ygo series.
Not only is he a capable duelist, he’s also one of the most athletic characters. He literally jumped from a helicopter onto a moving motorcycle. Survived an explosion. I mean he was TERRIFYING. Shun had complete faith that he survived the explosion because he’s faced against the tiny menace before and it was terrifying.
And his redemption? He doesn’t angst over guilt or his misdeeds as a child soldier. Instead he just keep his eyes firmly on the present, trying to protect Yuuya and Yuzu in any way he can.
He made up his mind about defying Academia and just went for it, no hesitation.
“I’m deeply sorry for killing your brother, I know apologies won’t mean anything. So if you want revenge, you can take it after we save Yuuya and Yuzu.” Like wow there.
Look at this “thanks, just leave it to me” face. This eager “let me be helpful” puppy face… Just… Wow Sora you need to chill down.
This kid is tiny and intense and terrifying and have the nerves of steel.
I can’t figure out what people like about Yuya’s entertainment dueling. The only time I’m interested in his dueling is when he’s in Berserk Mode–it’s the only time there’s any real emotion behind it.
Hon, that’s kinda the point. He’s trying to imitate his father’s dueling style for a good chunk of the season. Which might be why Berserk Mode is more “emotional”- because it basically says “fuck that shit” and runs entirely on emotions he’s been suppressing- because of the advice his father gave him.
Basically, the influence Yusho had on his kid is enormous. He wouldn’t even be a Dueltainer if it wasn’t for his dad. It’s all part of his character development arc. I think you see that in some way. Seeing Berserk Mode and having all his hidden emotions bubble to the surface would of course be more intense. His father’s advice to always smile covers that up most of the time.
I laugh every time I read people saying Yuzu is the biggest damsel in distress so far. Like did they watch the original? Mokuba Kaiba is ten times more a damsel in distress than Yuzu will ever be.
Hey anon! Why
would you start a fight? lol but since you asked, I decided to make a positivity post here, for this arc, since a lot of people are angry in the tags. This is pretty long so I’ll put it under a Keep Reading
