So I got to this part in the manga and I was like “Wait, how did the anime pull that off again?” Because this makes sense in the manga context–Yugi and Mokuba are just sitting at a regular table, and Mokuba can easily reach across and grab the star chips–but in the anime they’ve got those great big hologram arena things, where the duelists, like, scream at each other from opposite ends of a basketball court while standing on cherry pickers.
I was sitting there thinking “What ingenious choreography did they have to arrange to get Mokuba from his cherry picker all the way over to Yugi’s? :0″ And then I went back and checked,,, and it turns out
Joey gets confused about why defeating Yugi will save Kaibacorp…so the others all start trying to explain it to him…
and Atem finds their let’s-painstakingly-explain-this-plot-point-to-Joey-and-also-the-audience conversation so fascinating that he pauses in the middle of his duel to listen in on it…conveniently turning his back on Mokuba…
and then he finally turns back around after staring fixedly down at his friends for the past 30 seconds, his anime hair having apparently blocked his peripheral vision…
and at some point during those 30 seconds Mokuba apparently leaped off his platform, sprinted across the field as fast as his tiny eleven-year-old legs could carry him, scrambled up behind Atem (but quietly enough that Atem couldn’t hear him? a stealthy scramble?)
and then he yeets himself back down
anyway that’s the anime’s brilliant solution for How Mokuba Stole the Star Chips
