GX Finalized-Subs!70 (WIP): Manjoume’s Calling?
It’s about time they gave him an official birthday! ;u;
It was two days ago but I’m late with everything.
“Thanks Hank you really taught me a lot about propane and propane accessories!”
“And I tell you hwat, young man. I don’t think I know hwat a ‘heart of the cards’ is, but I know for certain you’ve got the heart of a Texan.”

jou’s redemption story is nice and all but when i think about how kaiba pretty much did the same thing as him, i wonder if jou stealing the final piece of the millennium puzzle actually saved his (and honda’s?) life/sanity
like kaiba steals yugi’s grandpa’s treasure and gets tortured for it. jounouchi steals yugi’s treasure and gets redemption and friendship. is the only difference here that the millenium puzzle wasn’t finished for jou? if the puzzle was finished earlier, would he have been subject to a shadow game if he did something similar (or just for bullying yugi)? with what we know about him afterwards, would we still think he’d deserve it, or would he still deserve to be redeemed? what does that say about every other victim of the shadow games?

So I’ve started reading the Yu-Gi-Oh manga and absolutely no one warned me about how truly insane this story is. Up until now, my knowledge of Yu-Gi-Oh consisted solely of a couple of facts pulled from cultural osmosis. Kid has a weird necklace with Egyptian-related powers. There’s some other version of him that takes over. He duels people with real monsters from a card game. Blue Eyes White Dragon. That’s all I got, with the added, crucial detail that it seemed like it had the generally peppy, love-saves-the-day atmosphere of most shonen stuff.
So you can imagine my immense surprise when I started reading a story that (from what I’ve gathered) was originally meant to be a horror manga and the art style just…. never got the memo about changing:
And yeah, love does save the day a lot, but Other Yugi also tends towards a Russian Roulette version of “justice.” Will he let your own sins be your undoing? Play what’s arguably a rigged game from the start? Give you a single, nightmarish vision for 24 hours and then let you go? Drive you permanently out of your mind? Straight up set you on fire? Who can say!
Thus far (I’m on Volume 4), stories range wildly from “Mean teacher tries to embarrass and expel student with a crush, so Other Yugi has her makeup flake off to reveal her ugliness inside and out” to “Archeologist – whose sins are up in the air by modern standards – has his mind rearranged so that he’s forced to become a puppet who attacks his friends and is beaten repeatedly in an effort to keep him from killing them. Anzu likewise has her mind invaded and becomes a living doll without feelings or conscious thought, forced to stand on a precipice while Other Yugi desperately tries to rescue her by combating horrific visions.”
But don’t worry, Shadi crumbles under the knowledge that he has no friends and the day is saved!
I feel like this post might make it sound like I’m not enjoying the manga. I’m enjoying it a whole lot. But I’m also endlessly amused by how much this is not what I expected. At any given time will I be reading about the group dealing with a con man selling sneakers, or the traumatized, billionaire high schooler who built a death amusement park solely to get revenge on Other Yugi by killing him and his friends? Hell if I know, but it’s a good bet they’ll probably mention hamburgers at some point.

GX Finalized-Subs!69 (WIP): Napoleon Toying Around
Just got to the halfway point with 69′s script and thought I’d show this little scene off. It’s interesting because of how Napoleon throws the phrase “がってん承知の助" into his line above–while looking it up, I got the gist that the phrase basically makes a name out of its “understood!/leave it to me!” meaning (sorta in a “no way Jose” kinda way?), as well as it being a more Edo-era saying in Japan. I saw the Crunchy team went with “eventual lemon tea” which… I don’t quite get how they got there; maybe going for a slight “lemon tea”/”leave it to me” pun, but seems like a slight stretch, and nothing in the kanji sticks out as tea-related, lol. (My original line here was more played-straight and just translated to “I’m already aware of that,” but it doesn’t quite work with the confused/groaning looks on Kenzan et al’s faces.)
Because of that “name-ification” of the phrase and its semi-dated reference, I thought the nod to LITB (as a show I’m sure most of us millennials/Gen-Xers might know from childhood) might be a good way to get it across, lol; for those more Japanese-savvy, would that be a good adaptation? I kinda like it myself, but it’s not too final yet. (The dub didn’t bother with it, really–Bonaparte talks about his “master plan” which confuses everyone, and when asked for thoughts, Jaden’s just all “this duel’s sweet!” which, okay sure lol.)
Also went with “the VP’s got jokes!” for Judai’s “he’s funny” line since he’s in a jovial/”just wanna have fun” mood most of the episode despite the stakes for the Red dorm lol (and “VP” as “Vice-Principal” shorthand lets the line register well while onscreen, imo, along with being a nod to the “VP Napoleon” shorthand I use in the credits).
au where the dub tried to keep this going and the big 5 all had last names like “Biggs” and “McHuge”
- Biggs
- McHuge
- Grant
- Grande
- Stacks
That’s five. Easy peasy. You’re welcome, 4Kids TV.
