5D’s 23 - Dub-Uncut Edition (Ft. Japanese OST?! WIP #1)
So… a neat little find happened where one of the official YGO channels–the Latin America one?–had uploaded the 4Kids-dubbed episodes, except that there were a few without the dub’s music–and in GX’s case, some without sound effects, too! (which led to this bit of gold by @yamimario fsejfklsdfjksdl)
5D’s 22-26 were part of it, and since I love #23, I thought I’d give restoring the Japanese OST a try first, like my project with ARC-V #10 but much cleaner. And like it, it’s becoming a dub-uncut deal where I’m tweaking the dialogue some to make it match the Japanese script more–not so much in accuracy (though in 23′s case, it helps it’s already somewhat accurately dubbed) as in timing, so people aren’t talking when they shouldn’t be.
For this part, I spliced in the respective audio from 22 to go over the quick recap (save for some of Koda’s whimpering, for which I just resorted to the Japanese version for a bit because I hate Akiza’s line there she’s so insufferable this early in the dub; also recycled a later line for “This might hurt!”), and recycled some lines from 22 over the new footage that the dub cut out here. And I’m tweaking the OST as released on the Sound Duels to recreate the soundtrack; you might hear a weird thing around where Yaeger walks out, and that’s from how they pitched-down the track there, which I tried to recreate but Vegas couldn’t make it so fine-tunedly. So far, it’s turning out great (I’m up to after the Aki/Divine scene), and this part isn’t final yet (want to see if I can get a Jack grunt or Godwin “heh” somewhere), but let me know what you think!
Special thanks to @stardustdragon123 for sharing their findings over on NAC, and @skelenator-rainbow for giving me a heads-up! :D
So I said before I’ll be going ahead on this side-project, replacing Yamamoto’s music with Yutaka Minobe/Wall 5 Project’s work from Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s’ awesome soundtrack–just so there’s a consistent soundtrack I can watch the show with, and also just messing around for some fun–and I’ll be sharing it for whoever’s interested in seeing how it pans out. I downloaded some 320kbps rips of the first two Sound Duels to get some good quality in here, too. The goal’s to make it to The Final Chapters to give the show a full consistent soundtrack, ideally without any placements rivaling that disco theme (you know the one) in terms of awkwardness.
After months of delaying it, here’s episode 4! I did a new sort of tweak with the scene where I had Godwin’s Theme play for the scene with Yemma, having it cut out as Goku’s all “Yo!” at him (as opposed to my earlier idea of a disc-scratch). Personal favorite scenes include “The City” over Goku being ridden towards Snake Way, “Showdown” over the Raditz flashback, and one of the twins’ themes over Goku worrying about eating/asking about Baba, since the Yamamoto track had a cutesy track there. Let me know what you think!
I might include song lists too, as I get these done; I plan to work on these a little quicker, so hopefully episode 5′ll be done sooner.
Curious, anyone ever get to cut out everyone here individually from that V-Jump 777 Calendar way back, or reblog someone who did? @kurivolt managed to get Yuma and Judai, but I don’t remember seeing/reblogging the other three. Asking for a friend~
5D’s!DBZKai Episode 4 (WIP) - Respect your Satanic Gatekeeper, kids!
So I’m getting back to finally doing some more work on my YGO5D’s!DBZKai side-project as I get episode 4 underway, and I hit this scene. Originally, Yamamoto’s cover of Bolero was playing, and I debated between using Legend of the Signers and Rex Godwin’s theme here before settling on Godwin’s theme (since I felt like Legend of the Saiyans Signers might be best to first use when Vegeta’s doing his death monologue to Goku later). But then Goku does his “Yo!” and I got the idea to record-scratch the music for the shot before picking it back up, haha.
I’ll either do this or just play the song through, but I was wondering what people might think of it! :P
#tbt to when I made a presentation in my Japanese 202 class back in college on the Tanabata festival (which starts today in Japan), which was inspired by -OZONE-, a song used in a show about card games–how about that? I also just really loved this song back then, haha. And it was cool how it tied into the legends about it. And apparently Yusei’s birthday falls on it? Oddly fitting.
(Bonus: Live)
Hey!
So, I’ve slowly been working on this project in between my fansubbing YGO GX; Dragon Ball is sorta my secondary fandom–though I’m less active in it, I’ll occasionally reblog a thing or two here–and the Kai dub has been insanely fun to watch. However, a lot of fans likely know how Kai’s composer, Kenji Yamamoto, was canned over a music scandal where a lot of his tracks were plagiarized–three episodes away from ending after Cell. Toei rushed to replace his tracks with Z Kikuchi stuff, then went back to the rest of the series, which wouldn’t be a bad thing–if they used more tracks to work with. I loved the Yamamoto score despite that, and while I like the Kikuchi score, I felt the music gets repetitive too easily given the limited tracklist. (Also, a Cell arc theme playing in the Saiyan arc wut)
Now, I love consistency (as anyone who knows how I go about subbing knows), and I’m also a big YGO fan. Way back, I got the idea to time the vocal tracks for clips with 5D’s’ soundtrack (Wall 5 Project/Yutaka Minobe; YGO series generally have great music, and 5D’s is up there); one of my favorites was Goku’s Super Saiyan transformation to “Light & Dark.” And then, I decided I’d try to make a consistent soundtrack for Kai using that soundtrack. It’s amazing how well it works in spots, haha.
So, enter this. As I’m only up to episode 4 (which I just finished and am adding here!), I’ll update this post as I get more done and reblog it/post the new ones separately and linking to this, so keep an eye out! Feel free to send me feedback, as I’d love to hear what people think of these, haha. I’m going by the soundtracks’ release order, spacing things out to fit the arcs, unless I feel a track in a later release fits better (saving most of SD3 Disc 1 for likely the Buu arc now that the dub’s finally a thing), and also trying to use some unreleased tracks if able. I’ll figure out a way to release the audio files; either I’ll post them here/NAC, or maybe on Kanzenshuu now that my account’s active there. Stay tuned, lol; enjoy!
(Also, the vocal audio for the Narrator on episode 3′s recap is wonky because the way I extracted the center vocal channel still kept the Yamamoto recap track there; I recreated it from the soundtrack and used some noise reduction to get as much out as I could out; hopefully I’ll get to fix that with better audio.)
Dub!5D’s AU where everything is better the same except Yusei’s voice is Greg Abbey’s Taizan/Damon caveman voice from GX.
Had some time this week, so I finalized my comparison for 5D’s 18! A bunch of dialogue edits in this one, as well as the first edit-Japanese-text-into-Latin-but-not-really edits. Happy reading!
So with my laptop back up and running, I finally got back to finalizing these! Here’s 15′s, all reuploaded. And since I was just bored at work, I also finalizedeth the comparison I had writteneth for episode 16-eth! (Guess what got annoying there…) Also tackling some brief thoughts on Bella Hudson as Akiza, who thankfully sounds much better in about… 50 episodes. D:
Happy reading!
For those interested, I’ve added back my comparison for 5D’s episode 14! Not the best adapted episode, but at least it’s pretty to look at thanks to Haranimation.
Yours would be too if you ever feared being hit by a random ATLAS PUNCH
For those interested, 5D’s Episode 13′s comparison is now up and loaded! Featuring the infamous “Mr. Amnesia Man” subplot that had no reason to be added. I wish I could forget it, though… Enjoy!
Also, I’ll be giving the previous ones a slight makeover in terms of screencap size, and adding a spot to credit who’s responsible for adapting the script in each episode (that I’ll fill in once I get more of the DVD/Webrips). Just so we know who to blame for the cringe-worthy episodes.
And finally got the subbed version re-uploaded!
This is Japanese!BBT after tons of audio editing and a rescored soundtrack to include more tunes from GX and DM that the official version didn’t include, opting instead for more 5D’s music than anything (which, while I love the 5D’s tunes, considering it’s a crossover/anniversary movie, sharing the love would’ve been cool). Sparked by the disappointment most fans felt over at Janime/NeoArkCradle over that, suggestions were brought up, GoldenUmi from GX_ST gave me audio tracks to work with, I worked some editing magic to get rid of most of the leftover music, timed the new songs, leveled them out volume-wise and added some SFX where needed, and BOOM goes the dynamite. It’s not entirely perfect, though, given said editing and having lost the original tracks to try and fix it with, but it’s at least watchable.
(I did tweak the dialogue a bit to match the original more, moreso in the beginning by switching some lines around or muting others (and just realized I missed a good chance with Jaden’s “about to get closer!” line in the first scene), and I added back monster sounds for the most part. Some parts might sound like they’re missing SFX; I really just put more effort into making the Japanese version sound good, lol.)
Subs originally by GX_ST/TnKP, edited by me.
Enjoy! Hope that helps, neoxyzero! :)
(You can also download this over at NAC!)
So, I’ve been working on and failing to get the subbed version of BBT up with the new score on Cloudy for who knows what reason, yet the dubbed version I made somehow works. :S
So, here’s this for the time being, while I work on getting the subbed version to upload. I did tweak the dialogue a bit to match the original more, moreso in the beginning by switching some lines around or muting others (and just realized I missed a good chance with Jaden’s “about to get closer!” line in the first scene), and I added back monster sounds for the most part. neoxyzero, if you’d like, you can check this out for the time being!
