Episode 13: A Duel to Remember | Lance's Comparisons

For those interested, 5D’s Episode 13′s comparison is now up and loaded! Featuring the infamous “Mr. Amnesia Man” subplot that had no reason to be added. I wish I could forget it, though… Enjoy!

Also, I’ll be giving the previous ones a slight makeover in terms of screencap size, and adding a spot to credit who’s responsible for adapting the script in each episode (that I’ll fill in once I get more of the DVD/Webrips). Just so we know who to blame for the cringe-worthy episodes.

This is Japanese!BBT after tons of audio editing and a rescored soundtrack to include more tunes from GX and DM that the official version didn’t include, opting instead for more 5D’s music than anything (which, while I love the 5D’s tunes, considering it’s a crossover/anniversary movie, sharing the love would’ve been cool). Sparked by the disappointment most fans felt over at Janime/NeoArkCradle over that, suggestions were brought up, GoldenUmi from GX_ST gave me audio tracks to work with, I worked some editing magic to get rid of most of the leftover music, timed the new songs, leveled them out volume-wise and added some SFX where needed, and BOOM goes the dynamite. It’s not entirely perfect, though, given said editing and having lost the original tracks to try and fix it with, but it’s at least watchable.

Tracklist/Dubbed version

(I did tweak the dialogue a bit to match the original more, moreso in the beginning by switching some lines around or muting others (and just realized I missed a good chance with Jaden’s “about to get closer!” line in the first scene), and I added back monster sounds for the most part. Some parts might sound like they’re missing SFX; I really just put more effort into making the Japanese version sound good, lol.)

What was Yliaster actually supposed to be ( before they had to drastically change the 5Ds story and yliaster to robots ) ? Who was the mysterious yliaster man that appeared before Rudger Goodwin , another mysterious man also talked to rex and jaeger sometimes ... I feel like 5Ds would have been so god-tier without those unnecesarry changes ...

Well, with Rex’s exposition in episode 7, we were led to think Yliaster was this super-secret organization responsible for the big phenomena in the world like wars, droughts, economic turmoil, etc. Then suddenly, time-warping robots. We also never found out who mystery man is, either, and he’s seen also talking to Yaeger in a scene or two. Pretty sure he’s the voice that talks as the Dark Signers are taken over against their will, too.

What could’ve been, if either Tomioka got to keep head-writing for the show, or the story didn’t have to get changed so much…

Glad to see the site back up and running! I missed seeing you go in depth into all the changes, big and small. I wish you luck as you tread through the minefield that was the 1st 5D’s dub arc.

Good to be back there, finally! Just working through some weird html in some of the pages I saved so it looks presentable haha. But yeah, I’m glad you’ve been enjoying them; I’ve had some ~~possibly sadistic~~ fun going in so deep, and I do plan to keep on going to the end, maybe finally throw on a GX comparison or five at some point once I get up to 64 back up. But man, dub!5D’s Arc 1 is one hell of a minefield… I’d need magic glue to get myself back together!

Hey, does anyone have a spliced-together picture of the pan in OZONE of all the Signers without text? I want to try adding it to the textless video I have, but I also want to add it to my site to show how the two pans are different. silivagalaxy posted this video a while back to show it in action, but I’d like the actual image to rework the pan with.

So my old 110mb GX/5D’s comparison site is being reincarnated! Slowly.

I signed up on Bluehost to pay $3.50-ish/month for it, and it’s being powered by Wordpress. I’ll be spending some time getting the hang of it as I copy over the html from my old site’s pages and then reformat things, so hang tight. As of now, I have 5D’s’ Season and OP/EN pages up and linked to each other (though I didn’t save the more recent copy of the OP/EN page so I’ll have to add to it), and 5D’s 1′s comparison is the only one actually up for now. I’ll slowly add the rest this week.

Finished up 5D’s!DBZKai #2 last night, and figured I’d show a quick preview using that scene I talked about last week that works really well with “Mind Games,” for anyone who’s interested. I’ll probably have the thing uploaded tonight after work, since I don’t think I have any more volume-tweaking to do. Enjoy! I really like how this part came out haha.

All right, so if anyone else out there is at all familiar with Dragon Ball Z Kai, and have been since the onset, you’ll know that the show went through a sort of soundtrack hell ever since Kenji Yamamoto, the guy who originally composed the OST, was found to have plagiarized a bunch of tunes from big-budget films like Avatar and Terminator. In Japan, this was discovered just as the Gohan VS Cell finale was airing, which prompted a rushed last-minute replacement of his OST for 96-98 with some of Shunsuke Kikuchi’s old soundtrack for DBZ. Which isn’t terrible, though if you followed DBZ:K early and got into Yamamoto’s music like I did, it was disappointing. They were also apparently only working with a certain amount of tunes, since a lot of them played repeatedly (also Cell-arc stuff during the Saiyan arc wat).

As a result, the episodes released with Yamamoto’s score began to disappear as they were replaced with re-releases featuring Kikuchi’s, which happened here in the US, too; the original Nicktoons airing got as far as the early Android Arc before switching to Kikuchi, and we got up to near the end of Goku VS Freeza on DVD with Yamamoto before subsequent Parts and Season Sets were released with Kikuchi. And now there’s a new composer for the Buu arc, Norihito Sumitomo. A lot more info about this can be found here, if you’re interested.

But anywho (since I’m sure I’m digressing a bit haha), ever since, fans have manually reinserted the Yamamoto score into later episodes, but for a while there was a slight “meme” going on where people would use the OST from other shows on DBZ:K, with music-less clips thrown out onto the web. So I got the idea (while working on YGO Bonds Beyond Time’s rescoring) to try DBZ:K with YGO tunes, and I thought 5D’s would fit well. I’d also done a video a while back with Goku’s SS Transformation to JACK Battle and “Light and Dark” that came out awesomely lol. I finished this a while ago, but haven’t had a chance to work it into the video file haha.

So here you go! Feel free to give it a look and tell me what you think. I might be tempted to try this some more lol. The idea behind the music was to treat it the same way 5D’s/the Sound Duel CDs treated it, mirroring the tune selections 5D’s had going in the Fortune Cup arc, for the most part. The title theme’s a WIP, though; did want to slow down the 5D’s title card theme to fit it but it sounded weird, and I think I tried using the end of “Yusei Fudo” for it but it didn’t work too well, so I just looped the TC theme a bit. I tried haha.

I really wonder what more I can do to try getting more people to notice my GX/5D’s Unreleased BGM petition. I mean, it’s posted on here, I’ve given it the occasional reblog, it has a decent amount of reblogs and–as a result–a good bit of word-spreading behind it, I’ve posted about it on my Twitter (albeit once, but also once in Japanese), and yet it’s only gotten 53 signatures at this point–and while I definitely appreciate everyone who’s signed it so far, it’s been almost two months since I started it. Which is why I kinda hoped there’d be more support than that from the fandom lol. And I don’t know where else to post about it. ~~Or maybe I’m just not using social media properly OTL~~

I mean, hey, aren’t there a lot of GX and 5D’s fans out there who liked/loved a lot of the music that didn’t get released? ZeXal’s unexpected Sound Duel 5, made thanks to fan outcry, came out last week and put a huge dent in the “unreleased music” list, and getting the same done for GX and 5D’s (but especially GX since it has a ton more) would be great! Don’t you want that tune playing when Ryou goes all Hell Kaiser? Or that tune when Ryou’s starting his game strong against Johan? OR that tune when Yusei gives Rudger his “WHY DO MY FRIENDS LIKE ME” speech? OR THAT tune when RALLY SACRIFICES HIMSELF? OR THAT TUNE WHEN JACK ATLAS MUSTERED ALL THE BADASSITY HE COULD DESPITE ALL HIS MAJOR FLESH WOUNDS TO PUSH HIS D-WHEEL? All among many others, all in absolutely flawless quality?! ~~or most if they do make it onto a CD~~ I mean, hey, GX’s 10th Anniversary is a better time than any!

Then, if you haven’t already (and again, thanks if you have!), consider signing that petition and spreading my post about it around. :) Because as much as I’m willing to rip these, there are some that are impossible to get perfectly (example) and it’d be nice to get the tracks as originally intended. Or at least some explanation as to why they were never released. I’m also working on a video in Japanese to boost the petition over on Nicovideo, so hopefully that helps, too.

To Marvelous Entertainment: Release Yu-Gi-Oh! GX and 5D's Unreleased Music

I’ve finally gotten this petition online! I’ll probably touch it up at some point (and if anyone wants me to add anything, let me know!), but there it is, and it’d be great if this got spread around like wildfire. I’ll also try to plug this to Japanese fans by making a video on my Nicovideo account, but hey, let’s get ourselves a GX Sound Duel 3 and/or 5D’s Sound Duel 4! Or at least some kind of statement, because skipping 40+ awesome songs in GX and 20+ in 5D’s for no reason really makes no sense. Yu-Gi-Oh! series always have great soundtracks, and it’d be nice to appreciate both GX’s and 5D’s’ in full.
