Looking for a little help on an animation edit I’d like to work on for my finalized episode 65 subs–I’m trying to correct an error where they showed Mad Dog Inukai’s Multiple Slime in Defense Mode despite it being in Attack Mode, entailing a few frames’ worth of editing to remove the Slime (as I’ve already masked it out to slap onto the fixed frames), so you’d just need to replicate the floor and cage bars over it.

I was in talks with someone who I hoped would be able to help, but unfortunately between their work schedule and maintaining their YouTube channel, that’s fallen through.
Details here; if you’re good at Photoshop/etc and might be able to help with this, it would be much appreciated–I’d credit you in the episode’s end credits, but can also commission the help if need be. Shoot me a DM if interested; would be great to make this fix happen if possible. There wouldn’t be a huge rush, though if you’d be able to work on it within the month or sooner, that’d be great, as the wait trying to work with my contact has delayed this episode for over three months now, lol. (The wait hasn’t been too bad, since I’ve been able to get a jump on giving my finalized episodes thus far a final revision [and I’m up to the Seven Stars episodes now], but yeah)
Thanks in advance! 🙏🏽
(Reblogs for visibility would be appreciated~)
Little detail I noticed just re-refinalizing a few episodes’ subs (per my post last night):
Judai loses to Ryou in episode 8 after challenging him knowing he was #1 at the Academia, and part of the Kaiser’s strategy was using De-Fusion/Fusion Undone to split his Cyber Twin to go into Cyber End.
A few episodes later, Judai seems to have made it a learning experience as he debuts his first use of De-Fusion on poor Ayanokouji (Harrington).
Did he pick it up as a sign of his respect for Ryou after their duel? Possibly? 🤔
UTSUKUSHII
KENN really doesn’t sound like he’s missed a beat as Supreme King Judai which is awesome (I still remember the chills I felt when I first heard him in GX 138, and I feel like I have a lot of his taunt lines memorized from the show
😅), though it does sound like he slips into his Judai voice a little explaining Dark Gaia’s effect, haha. chOOOOUYUUUUGOOOOUUUU!!!! Also, I like his losing lines since we never did hear him react to O’Brien actually defeating him, outside of a few gasps and yells, and it’s neat that they gave him so many lines for cards he didn’t use but Judai did like Mirror Gate or even Skyscraper 2, and even the manga Heroes, at that.
Matt Charles sounds like he’s putting in a better performance here than in Season 3′s dub (the lack of the voice filter helps, which felt like it was added to compensate for his lackluster performance there; he sounds a bit more convincing as Jaden’s “evil” side), aside from the awkward pauses before calling out some of the Monsters (though that’s kind of a universal thing). I like hearing the lines for all those other cards in his English voice, too. Weird that they used “Feel the power of the shadows” at his Duel Links line when SK Judai said “Show me the darkness in your heart” there…
One of my main gripes is still there, though, in how Konami skimps out on the extra detail to the effect explanations that’s there in the Japanese dialogue (Malicious Bane lowers my Monster’s ATK, but what’s it do with that difference? Oh, Supreme King Judai mentioned it gets powered up). I feel like they could get away with it, lol. Also, did they really need to give his Sparkman line the “Light ‘em up!” bit, or use “Centrifugal Cyclone Slash!!” for Wild Cyclone’s “Cyclone Slash…?” (Also, still weird that they’re using the dub’s attack names for Avian/Burstlady/Sparkman when the TCG cards and the JP dialogue reference Featherbreak/Burstfire/Spark Flash.)
I do appreciate that maybe 50-70% of his English lines are more accurate to the Japanese dialogue, like the “you’re no hero you’re one of my victims” line (though “you brought this upon yourself” not matching his “all is powerless against my ultimate power” line is a bummer since it’s so iconic lol); maybe that’ll come in handy for a thing later…
(Also, his theme isn’t bad, even if it’s hard to top Sad Duel)

GX Finalized-Subs!65 (WIP #2)
(EDIT 6/26/21: Never mind, lol; managed to get a good fix for this [see my last reblog on this post])
Hey, everyone! Wanted to throw this out there and see if someone would be able to help out a little with an animation-fixing edit I’m trying to do for GX 66:
So, I’m trying to add back an animation fix that the dub did with Ryou below in the episode 8 flashback–they had his Duel Disk move into place as he plays his Cyber Dragon in the right Monster Zone, since originally, he places a Monster in Defense Mode on his second one, which turns out to be the Cyber Dragon shown in Attack Mode on his third Monster Zone a few seconds later as he uses Revival of the Dead/Monster Reborn to bring back his earlier one. Oddly, the dub edit looks like it could’ve been an animation fix you’d expect on the DVDs which usually handle these, yet it’s not on the Astral_Union DVD rip I’m working with.
(Original Japanese version of the shot)
(What the fix looks like in episode 8; I edited in Japanese Cyber Dragon over the dubified card, along with restoring detail to Ryou’s arm and hand and his Disk that 4Kids didn’t really pay attention to.)
I have most of it restored in 66 already, but to put on the finishing touches, I’d need the sky behind his Disk to be redone so I can mask the moving disk on top of it–I didn’t want to just use the dub’s footage because all the flashbacked-to clips in the Japanese version of 66 are touched up a bit in brightness, so it’d be inconsistent since the dub footage is a bit darker (since they added back a ton of shots they didn’t need to in the dub, they seemingly just used the episode 8 footage throughout). And just masking in the disk and the part of the sky that I’d need behind it from the darker dub footage jars in spots with the rest of the frame as a result, since I couldn’t figure out how to exactly replicate the brightness of the Japanese 66 clip so it’s smoother.
I imagine it’s some clever use of the Clone Stamp tool in Photoshop, but I can’t figure out how to get a good edit, lol. Would someone more capable be able to take a crack at it? Since it’s mostly a still shot of Ryou, I’d just need the one frame below edited so there’s sky where Ryou’s Disk is:

Thanks in advance! (And of course, would shout you out in the episode’s ending credits 🙂)
Yusei Summons Shooting Quasar Dragon - Custom English Dub
kkjf;djfd;jfklfjk;lfj;sljf;skjf;klincredible
So, I want to shout out yugidmx5 over on YouTube/NAC because they’ve been pumping out some fantastic content and I want to pay it forward after they helped me before with the 5D’s “Dub-Uncut” episode edits. They went ahead and used a lot of different audio–maybe like 60/40 Duel Links lines/episode audio–to stitch together an English “dub” for the scene where Yusei summons Shooting Quasar against Z-ONE and did a phenomenal job with what was available, even ENG-ifying the cards while they were at it (I’ve asked for tips and kinda want to go back to some 5D’s clips to see if I could take a crack at it).
(My one sliiight critique was that Yusei has a Quasar chant line in Duel Links, so Shooting Star’s didn’t need to be recycled, but otherwise it’s fantastic.)
Some other highlights they’ve worked on, in no chronological order:
1) The Ceremonial Battle’s end in DM Episode 224:
2) The end to Judai VS Chronos in GX 1:
3) Yusei summons Junk Warrior in 5D’s 1:
4) The end to Judai VS Ryou in GX 52:
5) Yusei’s WAN TAAN SUREE KIIRU in 5D’s 87:
And a few others like Yugi beating the Exodia Ghoul in DM 56, Kaiba first using Fang of Critias in DM 150, Yusei’s first Shooting Star summon VS Placido in 5D’s 109, and Dark Yugi telepathically telling Pegasus to watch his back in DM 10. It’s impressive how they get better at isolating the vocals and music/SFX to make these happen!
GX Finalized-Subs!65 (WIP)
GX 65 (WIP) - Shameless Plugs (2), Ryou News Bulletin, and Monkey Mountain
Sorry for the lack of updates on GX 65! While work has been hectic the past few weeks (lovely when a new system for doing some things gets thrown onto you…), I’d been focusing heavily on trying to knock out the translation edits I wanted to work on, notably the ad for the Shadow of Infinity pack featuring the three Phantasms on the back cover of the magazine that both Judai and Shou look at–and I just finished them up after maybe a week/week-and-a-half of work! Though I’d worked on the edits for the Ryou article and Monkey’s business card first before I felt a second wind to try the ad edits, lol. More details on the process for each of these below the cut, for the curious.
But now that these are all done, and I’ve also already finished the animation/card fixes during the Ryou/Mad Dog duel I’d been working on (save for one, which I’m currently seeing about fixing if possible [though it’s likely I’ll just have to leave it, unless anyone might have some ideas?]), I’m finally ready to get started on the episode proper! Going to start editing the script soon, and pending that last edit, I may be able to have this done by mid-next week. Once I do, I’m planning to add back the fixes I did in episodes 1, 4, 8, and 22 to 66′s flashbacks and try to get that out soon after, since clipshow and all. Stay tuned!
GX 65 (WIP?) - A Card Not Played Right
So, I’ve been working on some of the other edits I’m doing for GX 65, and for one of them, I hoped to fix the animation error that happens here as Multiple Slime is attacked by Ryou’s Chimeratech Overdragon; it’s in Attack Mode (and Mad Dog Inukai takes damage after it’s destroyed accordingly), yet has its card under it as if it were in Defense Mode. I figured this would entail redrawing the tiles under it, clone-stamping some of the gate behind it, applying a little drop shadow, and working it back into the footage as I mask Multiple Slime back in over my edits (see photo #2). Problem is, as the beam of light comes closer, the tiles light up, and I hoped to light up the edited tile I did, but I can’t seem to figure out a good way to do it (since the frame and my tile edit move to the upper right as the beam comes in, my edit would have a hard stop at its edge unless I also tried to apply it in a later frame, but then comes the lighting issue)–let alone the explosion happening and trying to figure out how to light the tiles up there accordingly…
I don’t suppose anyone might have some tips on trying to do this in Photoshop? Or would someone who’s skilled enough and has some time on their hands be able to take a crack at removing the card themselves if I offered the frames to edit? I would probably just need the tiles redrawn and blended in, a drop shadow to be put under Multiple Slime like I’ve done above, and the gate recreated behind it, but you’d be welcome to do your own thing; I’ve already masked out Multiple Slime to add back onto the edit, so no need to worry about that. And because the shot only moves to the upper right (no zoom or anything), it should be easy to just duplicate whatever edit is done earlier into the later frames and move it accordingly. Worst-case, I’d probably just have to leave this error as-is, but it’d be nice to fix it if doable (especially since the dub didn’t catch this and also put their dubified card in Defense Mode under it 🙃).
(It’s funny because I did the reverse of this back in GX 30 with adding a Defense-Mode card under Judai’s erroneously-in-Attack-Mode Tempester, though I didn’t also have an explosion to deal with then, lol.)
GX 65 (WIP) - Read All About Ryou! (1)
Thanks to @paradoxi-kay’s fantastic work typesetting my translation for this magazine onto the cover, I was able to start working on getting it into the footage; first up was fitting it into the first shot it shows up in as Judai approaches the stack of magazines on the ground, which I managed to do last night.
First I took the translated cover and cropped it out into its own image, then I actually had to go in and remove some of the ghosting that happened as Judai’s shadow crept in by duplicating a few frames here/there. I then Power-Pin’d the translated cover into place in AfterEffects, applying a mask of the original cover on top along Judai’s thumbs and the general border of the cover. After that, I masked in the tied-up string on top, loops and all, and then I keyframed a mask along the shadow of Judai’s hair as it goes over the cover, the keyframes of which I then applied to a new layer of solid gray coloring–this made it so I had the general shape of Judai’s hair shadow there as it moves, which I then tweaked the opacity of, and I topped it off with a new mask on top of that of Judai’s original hair shadow outside the bounds of the cover to make it blend in more. Really like how it came out!
I’ll be getting some more editing done while I wait to hear from another editing helper on how we’ll tackle the back cover with the three Phantasms and the Shadow of Infinity pack ad (we were leaning towards just recreating it, as redrawing the beasts might be a bit hard [and the dub’s inconsistency with their edit made it sorta hard to work with too], and were looking for some help getting a solid render of Uria’s anime card artwork to then extend like a full-art render–if someone may be able to help here, it would definitely be appreciated!); stay tuned!
GX 65 (WIP) - Shameless Plugs
I thought I’d work on this magazine’s back cover a bit, and I managed to get a good look for this! Photo #2 is my current translation of this magazine’s back cover (which is an ad for the Shadow of Infinity booster pack as it was coming out), and #3 is the dub’s blanking of it–I tried to work on repainting Uria and Raviel a little yesterday, but wasn’t really getting anywhere, so ultimately I decided to work with the dub’s blank’d back cover for now* and worked it properly into this shot (the way the dub edited it, they enlarged the back cover image and kinda rotated it oddly, so I resized it and rotated it back to fit into the Japanese frame; their edit also sorta overstepped the “bounds” of the magazine and overlapped with the pages).
I’d first worked in a color gradient to the “Phantasms” text up top, but as I rotated the text into place, the gradient kept shifting from how I wanted–eventually, I realized I just needed to make it a Smart Object to keep it in place, lol. Added a drop shadow to the text as well using a Color Overlay on a duplicate layer, and did the same for the Uria and Raviel names before masking Judai’s fingers over the Raviel text (which I may polish up as I add it to the footage).
The challenge will be working with the back cover as it moves while Judai flips some pages; I may try to split the cover into its own image so I can do a corner pin in AfterEffects to keep the look consistent, but I’ll see what works; may take editing the four moving frames, though, since Judai’s hand moves but hmm…
*Out of curiosity, would someone skilled enough in Photoshop/etc be available and able to help with blanking the cover here (and as it’s shown in a later shot where Shou’s reading his copy of the magazine)? I kinda want to do my own blanking if possible so I don’t need to use the dub’s work, and I’d be happy to commission it if need be (would definitely be crediting in the ending credits). It’d be much appreciated!
