GX 19: A Few Cards Short (WIP #1)
Spent most of the day editing away my anxiety for primary results, lol. onto next week it is I’m knocking out my fixes before starting on the script, and between the three fixes I had already done while working on 18′s preview (two shown in the first and last caps) and the ones I just knocked out today, I singled out 15 fixes to work on, 90% card-related because I’m a detailed dork. I love that he has a Magic Card in his Monster Zone just ‘cause (and that he doesn’t fall off his cliff during that ACTION SCENE), but I still don’t get how Winged Kuriboh’s card was just cut off there. gg card guys!
The One With the Copycat (Part Uno)
Yugi Mutou’s deck will be on display at the academy. But the night before, the deck is stolen by Kagurazaka, a Yellow. Kagurazaka defeats Shou in seconds and appears before Judai. Judai and Kagurazaka duel–in what is also Judai dueling Yugi’s deck. Kagurazaka studies all there is to the techniques of the top duelists–he flawlessly masters Yugi’s deck, and finally even summons the Black Magician.
What better way to tie into Darkside of Dimensions coming out in Japan than to finalize this duel? :D
This is one of my favorites; you have an interesting idea in Kagurazaka as a copycat duelist, some nostalgia as he uses Yugi’s deck (and one point to the dub here for using some DM music), and Judai trying to hold his own against it. And Chronos somehow knocks down four people, nbd.
And as with the last 5 episodes, there were a bunch of fixes I worked into the episode, because you’ve got to love it when the staff gets lazy–list below the cut! (EDIT, 2021: Two new fixes applied, listed in bold under the cut!)
And special thanks to @akameniseis for swearing at Photoshop translating the Yugi poster in the beginning and the flier in Kagurazaka’s room a few minutes later! :)
Enjoy, guys; I’ll try to get the next episode done by next week in time for/just after DSOD’s release! (But there’s a bunch of fixes already to take care of, so we’ll see… XD;)
So, I finally wrapped it up, and I’m now encoding the episode. Main reason why I’ve been quiet the last few days, since I actually spent most of my time on it this week doing fixes/throwing in translation edits (my thanks as always to @akameniseis for taking the time to help; the text on that Yugi flier up there is their handiwork!), while I knocked out the script over the last day-and-a-half, then did a few more fixes I thought I should handle lol (notably, another “card in ATK mode when it should be DEF” one). I’ll detail the fixes when I post the episode’s link (all together, about 6), but here, have this sneak peek! I should have it up tomorrow. :)
Prepping to work on subbing 18 when
The One Where They Draw Things
Judai tries to buy a rare Golden Eggwich, but he learns that they’ve been stolen by someone for a few days now and are all gone. The culprit seems to be one who’s really good at drawing, stealing only the Golden Eggwich out of the other sandwiches that look alike on the outside. He captures the former Blue-student-turned-half-wild, Taizan–one who’d devoted a year to Mother Nature. The duel’s Judai VS Taizan, and Taizan’s deck is a recklessly bold deck relying only on drawing.
And it’s all done! I kinda like this episode more than 16, especially since Mrs. Tome gets a role to play. Taizan’s an interesting “filler” character with his whole nature sabbatical who probably should’ve gotten more appearances, but he at least returns in Season 2 which is cool. And Judai uses Rampart Gunner for the third episode in a row, lol.
On the technical side, I got to fix a line I was mostly unsure about the first time around, and fixing it now, it was an easy line to type out haha (”When you stole them, I could never get them.”->”Until you went and stole ’em, I was never off, either.”; keep learning, kids!). And as with this mini-”filler” arc, there were a bunch of fixes I did to the footage; mostly card edits for consistency, but notably trying to fix a huge error in the episode–how do you forget part of a Duel Disk? Full list of the fixes below the cut, as always. Also, decided to go with “Drawiches” and “Eggwich/etc” over “Drawbreads” and “Egg Bread/etc” since, despite it being more of a dub thing, I think it does work better.
I also set myself up with a few episodes’ worth of Preview/Thanks For Watching clips to help move between episodes quicker. I’ll prep some more for a few more batches when I’m able to. Enjoy, guys; next time’ll be the Yugi’s Deck episodes, and I should have 18 ready in the next week or two!
Getting In the Zones
I’m actually surprised I pulled this off haha. So the animators forgot to draw the rest of Taizan’s Disk in those frames, and I thought I’d try to fix that. In the first frame, the Disk was Judai’s and the “wing” part was from Kagurazaka’s–masked in from episode 18–while in the second frame, the Disk was from a later Judai shot, and the “wing” was from a Judai shot in 16. Then I just made a Drone proxy to put on his Disk along with a Drawler one I’d already made for a different edit, and bingo! Added the gif so you see how it’d look in action compared to the original.
One fix down, eight more to go!
Getting In the Zones (WIP)
Just a look for you guys at how this edit’s starting off! I’m splicing in Judai’s Disk here from a shot in 18, edited to get rid of Burstlady’s card in that second zone in Photoshop and zoomed in to make it bigger (added some sharpening as a result), and then splicing in the “wing” part of Kagurazaka’s Disk from a different shot in 18 to detail that part of Taizan’s disk here. I’d worry about the shading (it’s from when Judai’s surrounded by the Sealing Swords of Light, and there’s no real light source here, except for the moon maybe), but it’s only three frames, so. *shrug* I’ll see about detailing his deck’s top card too.
The next frame might be a bit harder, since it’s a view from under the Disk. I have some shots in mind to help, but if anyone happens to have some good reference shots I could use, lemme know! Odds are I may just leave that one alone since the zones could easily be offscreen, though, lol.
Today in “How Did You Forget That?” and “Well, That Escalated Quickly”…
Dub!5D’s AU where everything is better the same except Yusei’s voice is Greg Abbey’s Taizan/Damon caveman voice from GX.
This is a really cool shot.
The One With the Steakout–at Night!
There’s been a frequent case of Obelisk Blue students being forced into a duel with a mysterious man late at night, and–upon losing–having their rare cards stolen; Chronos appoints Judai to find the culprit. We meet Ohara–a huge Ra Yellow who doesn’t have much in the way of dueling skills–and his best friend Kohara, who seems to be skilled at dueling but is timid and has only lost his bouts; even when mocked by the Obelisk Blues, he can’t say a thing. That night, as Judai pursues the culprit, he comes across Ohara, but… Judai and Ohara then duel.
First off, if you haven’t seen the YGO GX Abridged version of this episode, please treat yourself! One of the best ones haha.
Now, this episode’s not too bad, and makes a hell of a lot more sense than the dubbed version (surprise surprise). Nice moment at the end with Judai and Kohara, too.
I also did a few minor-ish card consistency fixes to the episode–full list below the cut. Enjoy! I’ll work on 17 for the next week or two.
The One With All the Rackets
Well, this one was an adventure… But not because of the episode itself, lol–all things considered, this episode’s not a bad one, save for Ayanokouji’s grand exit. And it’s also a fitting one for Valentine’s Day!
Judai ends up in a duel against Mitsuru Ayanokouji, a Third-Year Obelisk Blue student who’s enamored with Asuka and mistakes Judai and her for a couple.
This one also saw me working the most fixes into an episode since starting to look into it. If you’ve been following my subs for a while, you know I love consistency. Unfortunately, the animators didn’t seem to share that same love, at least so far. D: So, with help from @saveyuzu and @akameniseis, as well as @silivagalaxy teaching me how to card-edit in AfterEffects, I got to work. All together, there were 14 different fixes done, 4 being Burstlady fixes–because the poor girl can’t catch a break. On top of those, I also translated the hit counters that show up once Ayanokouji uses Deuce to screw the rules–a full list of all the fixes done lies below the cut. It was fun, though, aside from all the keyframing; “It was quite educational!”, as Halil in ARC-V would say!
I’ll just be going back to 14 for a quick bit to update the Mega Thunderball fix I added to the preview, and updating the script for the “Captain Cheery” line (inspired by “President Peppy” in the CR subs). I also dug up some things worth fixing in 1-2 earlier episodes that I’ll use my new skills on at some point. Then, it’s off to episode 16! I’d put the ETA at maybe early next week; I already partly did one fix there for 15’s preview, so hopefully that’s the only one. Enjoy, guys! And hopefully, you had a nice Valentine’s Day, if you celebrated it. :)

GX Finalized!15 Progress Report - Those Short-Shorts Tho
Phew, almost done with the script–just have the preview to do tomorrow. Once it’s done, I have a few more very minor fixes to work on, then I’ll be working @saveyuzu’s Burstlady touch-ups into the episode before I finally encode it. Will Friday be a good ETA? Stay tuned.
