JC, aka GymLeaderLance99 or GLL99 or Lance99. 32|He/Him|NYC. I fansub GX, work on dub/sub comparisons for 5D's (and GX eventually), and have various other projects going. Expect a mix of YGO stuff (and a little ZeXal and SEVENS [which I'm slowly watching]), with some occasional randomness.Duel Links ID: 537-542-930 | Master Duel ID: 999-767-712

  • Swoldier_X out here doing the Egyptian Gods’ work with their Duel Links Anime-OST replacement mods; check out the Antinomy Theme/Clear Mind use near the end! I also love that they snuck in the unreleased “First Move” theme from GX for O’Brien.

There’s a link in the Description for you to apply the mod to your Duel Links on PC, and I’m not sure if it’s cumulative with their other music mods, but if not, the ones he did for 5D’s and GX World are there, too.  Also recommend their mods using the OCG Card Artwork!

  • So, while I’m doing my 99% editing to gear up to finalize my GX Season 2 subs, I thought I’d finally work on watching through ZeXal properly (I only ever really saw up to like episode 17 or something like every other week when it first aired, and with all the politics content I watch I could use some variety in these times lol).  So far I’m liking it better than I thought I would, though maybe because it’s years out from 5D’s airing right before it, and because I already had ARC-V to settle me into the idea of a younger cast if a show’s done well (last episode aside).  Yuma’s not a bad main, has his moments but when contextualized as his being 13, it makes sense. Kotori and Tetsuo are okay so far, I actually felt something for Ura-boy’s backstory, Cathy’s was a fun episode, and the Yuma/Shark dynamic is getting good; just finished episode 12 and their tag duel.  Yuma empathizing with Shark about being afraid to lose and fail was nice, and they both came out knowing more about the other and being more friendly with each other–as we know happens with dueling being a way to learn more about each other in anime world.  Next up’s my proper Kite intro, so looking forward to the refresher there, but I’m eager to get to when the plot beats pick up later on (in due time).

That said… I was always a fan of the theory that ZeXal happened in a parallelverse to 5D’s, where 5D’s was GX’s sequel where Synchro led to the future Z-ONE sought to stop and ZeXal was the sequel where Xyz was the norm instead, to explain why, say, that episode with the legendary monster statues didn’t have a Stardust Dragon one featured.  But then, this happened:

  • To Marvelous Entertainment: Release Yu-Gi-Oh! GX and 5D's' Unreleased Music

Yo guys, just wanted to repost this link in a newer post (thanks to everyone who reblogged my original post and follow-up for it) so more people would be aware of this petition.

As most GX and 5D’s fans know, a lot of music from the Japanese versions of those shows went unreleased, despite two (for GX; 3 for 5D’s, two of which were 2-CD releases) Sound Duel soundtracks, and they were a lot of the good ones.  In GX’s case, there was an incredibly huge delay with Sound Duel 2’s release, and in that time, we basically got two CDs’ worth of new music during the Seven Stars/Shadow Riders arc and Season 2 (notably A Powerful Threat, All-Out Duel, Reconciliation, Camula’s Theme, Saiou’s Theme, Standstill, Enjoying the Duel and a few here), as well as Season 3 (notably A Strong Force, Johan’s Theme and his Gem Beasts’ Theme); none of the new tracks during the former were released, and most of the Season 3 songs were released with tracks from Season 4 on Sound Duel 2 when it did come out. Also of note: Sound Duel 2’s only TV-Size OP/EN were Precious Time and Endless Dream (while 5D’s had all of its TV-size OP/ENs released).  I’d say that leaves 60% or so of GX’s soundtrack unreleased.

With 5D’s, while maybe 80% of the soundtrack was released, there were 10-15 tracks during the Fortune Cup/Dark Signers arcs that weren’t released yet they were used during memorable moments (among them JACK Battle 2, Yusei’s original battle theme, Hopeless Battle, and Lamentation), and the WRGP/Ark Cradle arc saw another 15 or so go unreleased (like this remixed Speed World, Sherry Battle, and Tactics).  A smaller pool of unreleased stuff compared to GX, but it still would be nice to have them in perfect quality.

Sure, ripping the tracks is a solution, but unfortunately, it can be hard to keep a lot of what defines the tracks intact, and it wouldn’t be the same as listening to it during an episode (example here).

Thing is, I started this petition back in October, and there are only 60-ish signatures! The goal’s set at the default 1000 on the site, but I suppose more realistically, getting 200 might be a good start (right?).  Now, this is the YGO fandom, and I know there are a bunch of GX/5D’s fans who liked/loved the series and a lot of the music that didn’t get released.  There were also a lot of ZeXal fans out there who were pleasantly surprised when an unexpected Sound Duel 5 was announced, made thanks to fan outcry:

    放送終了後も未収録音源のCD化を望むお声を多数頂きましたことを受け、今回の発売が決定致しました。

    *quick translation by me*

“Many of you voiced your wishes for CDs of the soundtracks that went unreleased even after [ZeXal]’s broadcast concluded, and that led us to this next release.”

It came out a few weeks back and put a huge dent in ZeXal’s “unreleased music” list.  Getting the same done for GX and 5D’s (but especially GX since it has a ton more) would be great, and is the general goal here.  I mean, YGO series in general have awesome soundtracks, and it’d be nice to appreciate GX’s and 5D’s in full.  GX especially has a great pitch going for it: this year was its 10th Anniversary!

If fans’ voices helped ZeXal, it can help GX and 5D’s.  If you’ve already signed, thanks so much! If not, well, help us out, fandom! It only takes a minute or two to sign. We can do it!

Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL - The Other English Dub

(AV Sync is off; treat it as a podcast if you will)

“Among the guests of the live stream was Kristi Reed, a veteran of the anime and video game industries for over 10 years and who directed and wrote Durarara!! and Persona 4: The Animation. Reed provided some insight into the much whispered-about Los Angeles dub of Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal, clips of which have only been shown at Armageddon Expo 2012 in Melbourne and Auckland.

Prior to the conclusion of the Yu-Gi-Oh! lawsuit last year, the Japanese licensors of Yu-Gi-Oh! were confident of their chances at triumphing in court and taking back the rights to the franchise. Ignoring the court’s warnings not to exercise the rights to a product that it hadn’t yet secured, ADK proceeded to produce its own version of Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal. ADK tapped Reed to direct the series with an L.A.-based cast, including Johnny Yong Bosch (Yuma), Vic Mignogna (Shark), Richard Cansino (Bronk), Cassandra Morris, Sam Riegel, and Liam O’Brien. After nine months, the result was a full-fledged product that was ready for the airwaves.

“We cast it, we recorded up to 26 episodes of it, we stripped out the music, completely recomposed to picture with two amazing composers, re-sound designed it, reanimated some sequences, and it was one of the most big-budgeted things I’ve ever worked on as far as anime goes,” Reed explained. Oh, and Yuma actually says “Kattobing” in this version, haha.

Dissatisfied with 4Kids’ work and not wanting to do business with it any more, ADK bent over backwards to make sure the L.A. team did well and were happy working on Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal. Reed described how ADK sent the L.A. team hard drives full of all of the animation layers and After Effect files, giving the American producers full rein to easily edit the video as they needed. Did they want to fix the mouth flaps to better fit the English dialogue? No problem! Did they need to edit an image so the network censors didn’t get on their case? Simple!

Within the American anime production industry, obtaining such resources from the Japanese studios is completely unheard of. The studios are very protective of their properties (and who wouldn’t be?) and licensees regularly need to adapt within the confines of the animation as it is presented.

Of course, we know how the lawsuit ultimately turned out. The Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal anime by 4Kids and Konami with the New York-based cast remains the de facto version of the show, while the version with the L.A.-based cast gathers dust inside a box.”

I NEED MORE OF THIS IN MY LIFE

I’m still trying to get over the fact that ZeXal’s apparently going to be 300 episodes long…

    image

But this would’ve been really cool to see if 4Kids hadn’t won that trial.  Not so fond of the “rescoring” thing, but based on how she described it, it would’ve probably been better done.

Still, ADK prooobably shouldn’t have ignored those warnings.  Would’ve probably saved them a crapload of money.

Also, Yuma sounding like Lelouch would’ve been… interesting…
