5D’s Dub-Uncut Episode 28 WIP #1: On Thin Ice
Finally have enough work done on 5D’s 28 to start showing it off a bit! I’d gotten started on it about 2-3 weeks ago and drafted up most of the dialogue, so now I’ve gone back to add the music and all. The effect applied to the video later is to get through the Content ID system, which kept blocking that section (managed to edit the early parts enough to avoid it there, and then the ending bit wasn’t blocked because 4Kids didn’t dub that Carly scene)
Here, along with showing off the Card Showcase bit–where I used Duel Links lines again to cover for Rua and Ruka’s lines–I also have the recap tweak to the end of episode 27, where the “Dark Tuning” track was pitched up and sped up a bit.
In the episode proper, you have the scene with the Dark Signers talking about Yusei–where I moved Roman’s “new champion” line to play where Demak originally said it after the rapid zoom-out, mixed with a laugh to space his lines out a bit–and then back at the duel, when possessed!Dick uses Dark Tuner Catastrogue’s effect, which I had to stitch together a proper explanation for, since an annoying Card Interruption did it in the dub; I recycled bits from episode 27 when he activated Blizzard Lizard’s and Call of the Haunted’s effects, then moved his line about the shadows to later when I redid his declaring Frozen Fitzgerald’s attack and explaining its effect to take out a ton of fluff. I moved Carly’s lines about “what we’re seeing” and real damage to play during the scene here where she sneezes that was cut from the dub, using Japanese Carly’s sneezing, and then I recycled Dick ending his turn from 27 to take out his fluff about Goodwin and just stick to the JP script.
Special thanks to yugidmx5 again for isolating the vocals for Roman’s “new champion” and some of Dick’s lines; the latter let me also stitch together a “Blizzard Strike!!” shout for Frozen Fitzgerald’s attack. Their help with that will also be helping with Turret Warrior later and other lines I’ll be trying to work in. (Preliminarily, I may have to keep the scenes with Yusei at the end of the episode talking about having to see Goodwin and “hiring” Ushio as a bodyguard because I don’t have enough dialogue from either of them to make it totally more accurate to the Japanese version, but I might be able to edit it enough so that it’s not so blatantly obvious the latter was an added thing… Be nice if I knew folks who could re-record the dialogue, lol.)
Stay tuned for more WIPs as I get work done on this!
TIL just browsing Spotify out of curiosity that Alice Nine A9(?) re-recorded CROSS GAME in their 15th Anniversary special release in 2019 👀
👀
👀
Also, ALvino also re-recorded Close to You in 2013 along with some of the other songs in that single and it sounds amazing how am I just hearing this now
Kaiser Ryou and Ed Phoenix are set to duel in the Pro Dueling League. While Ed’s deck is an E-Hero deck, it contains different cards and strategies than Judai’s, and so he Fusion-Summons “Phoenixguy.” The Kaiser strikes back with his Cyber Dragon cards, and Judai and the others, knowing it’s a deck he’s faced before, assume Ed to be weak. At last, the Kaiser closes in on him with Cyber End Dragon, strengthened by his Power Bond, but…
And a newly finalized 57 is all done! Only took 2.5 weeks, so not too shabby, lol. It’s a neat episode, establishes what the Pro League Ryou’s moved onto is like, we get some fated insight into our mysterious new freshman, and… Ryou’s spiral into Hell Kaiser is set into motion. Also, Judai learns something new about his deck, which… c’mon, ya dork. Overall, a good episode.
(Also, did want to note that, for Ed’s Heroes, I decided to use “[x]guy” as opposed to “[x] Guy” as I’d done before (ie, “Phoenixguy” vs “Phoenix Guy”); given that it’s a riff off of Judai’s “[x]man/lady” Heroes, and it’s written that way in Japanese without a space between “[x]” and “guy”, I figured it’d make sense. Means it’ll be “Diamondguy,” “Diehardguy,” etc when we get to Ed’s D-Heroes reveal next time.)
On the fixes/edits side: had a few card fixes to do, but the big ones were adding Burstlady’s oft-forgotten shoulder strap and taking a crack at fixing the signs Ryou walks past in Domino City that were mirrored for some reason, though I’d handled this latter one as I prepared 56. Details below the cut~
Enjoy, folks! After a little downtime (we do apparently have something happening tomorrow in the US which, however you go about it, you should consider taking part in if you haven’t yet [wake me up when dueling to settle world issues is being debated]), I’ll be looking more into working on 5D’s 28′s Dub-Uncut edit, mixed with preparing for finalizing both GX 58 and 59; as it’s the first real Judai VS Ed duel, and one of my favorites, I’ll be trying to release them together, so stay tuned!
I knew there was a reason 5D’s spoke to me… Enjoyed it a lot when watching it as it aired while in my late-teens/early-20s at college, but now that I’m more politically aware, including re: Marx/Debs/etc, I can appreciate it a bit more, lol.
And Yusei’s whole philosophy of placing the bonds he has with his friends over all else is a lot like Eugene Debs’s philosophy of “when I rise, it will be among the ranks, not from the ranks.”
5D’s is such a good show, despite the chaos later. A+ analysis here
🌹
(his analysis on Judai’s development in GX was also a great 10-12min summary, though I like some of the longer ones out there lol).
GX 57 (WIP) - A Strapping Issue #69 [probably]
Getting work done on GX 57′s video fixes before getting started on the script proper, and this one came up–it seems Burstlady can’t catch a break no matter who’s using her… The animators forgot to give her her shoulder strap and her arm cuff there; in my edit for it, I referenced Burstlady’s look as Ed fuses her with Featherman in the next shot (where the strap and cuff are drawn on) for consistency. I included the dub for comparison’s sake, because they actually thought to fill out her censored look while still giving her a strap and cuff (usually they’d add a strap for the “jumpsuit” and just connect it to the main “jumpsuit” without consideration for the cuff lol)–though because they had to fill out her whole “jumpsuit,” I see they tried to recreate that light shining as she appears, lol.
For my edit, once I worked on the one frame in Photoshop and added the strap and cuff, I went into Sony Vegas and first worked backwards to move her down to cover her moving upwards, then masked just the strap and cuff out and keyframed a brightness filter from bright to normal by the end. After that, I masked in some of the beams of light over Burstlady as she moves for several frames, making the opacity 50% and fading it near the end such that as the light dies down, you don’t suddenly see spots of skin over the strap and cuff (oddly, the dub editors seemed to just apply their new light over her; they didn’t brighten her “jumpsuit” which would logically be bright there). For only having edited the one frame with the strap and cuff, I think it came out well! I remember when I’d have a shot like this and I’d ask for help to edit multiple frames, but this way the look on her stays consistent throughout.
Also, BONUS:

YOU MISSED A SPOT GUYS
Just to spitball, but does anyone know an episode of 5D’s post-65 where Yusei had to deal with a monster that kept reviving itself in a duel? I’m checking some on the Wikia, but thought I should ask if someone remembered, lol. I’m trying to see if I can recreate an “Even if Frozen Fitzgerald [his monster] is destroyed in battle, it’ll keep coming back, and I’ll keep losing monsters” line for “dub-uncut” 28 and I’m looking for lines I could vocal-isolate to make it happen 🤔
Shou VS the Bug Girl! Insect Princess (The Gang Witnesses an Evolution (ft. Misawa)
A promotion for Shou to the Yellow dorm has come up, and the condition Chronos has prepared for him is to defeat Ran Kochou, a young woman from the Blue dorm, in a duel. Shou’s frightened about it, but words from Judai and the others begin to motivate him. Shou uses his Vehicroid deck to battle, while Ran uses her Insect deck. Ran spreads ants onto Shou’s field, raising her Insect Princess’s ATK to 2900 by destroying them. Shou battles on, deliberately not using Power Bond, and combines three of his Vehicroids to summon his Jumbo Drill…
rip misawa
Here’s finalized!56, folks! Overall, one of my favorite episodes because it starts off a thread of character development for Shou that we touch back on here/there in Season 2 (when we don’t meander too far from the plot) but really comes through more in Seasons 3 and 4. I love how he takes issue with Ran’s calling him just a “flunky” and acknowledges that, yeah, he’s chased after people out of admiration, but as of now he’s choosing to walk with them instead. It’s a neat moment, and Judai watching his evolution is the cherry on top. i end up having big Shou/Ryou feels by Season 4′s end Also, Manjoume’s new room is finally ready after two episodes, and Asuka’s crashing at Red for now because of Chronos/Napoleon antics. So, Red’s kind of the place to be, it seems.
The only gripe I have here is that this episode starts off the season’s trend of forgetting about Misawa. Which, that it happens in-series, is probably the writers acknowledging that they’ve forgotten him, but… no wonder the dude ends up trying to join the Society of Light later.
Thankfully, there weren’t any card fixes to handle here, but I did do some quick quality-of-watching fixes, including one big one at the end that… lifted me off my seat when I saw it, haha. Also, quick translation note included. List below the cut, as usual.
Enjoy, folks! I’ll be getting started on prepping for 57 soon to make up a bit for the gap between 55 and 56, with some occasional work on 5D’s “Dub-Uncut” #28 splashed in for variety (I actually managed to whip something up for the beginning Rua/Ruka bit with Turret Warrior, lol). Once I do 57 and knock out 5D’s 28, I’m thinking I’ll try to handle 58 and 59 together; it’s the first serious duel between Judai and Ed, and it was the first series of episodes from the Japanese version that I ever saw way back when–so, needless to say, they’re some of my favorites.
GX 56 (WIP) - Undue Credit (crunchyroll wut)
Okay, so Shou first mentions his “oniisan” here–“big brother” Ryou–as obviously teaching him about respect, but in pic #3 he’s audibly talking about his “aniki”–“Big Bro” Judai–teaching him not to give up, which somehow Crunchyroll missed? I just hit this scene as I’m finalizing my subs for 56, so I included my WIP finalized subs there, but… lol
The Official Yugioh channel uploaded creditless versions of the second Zexal opening and ending today. Could official Zexal subs be coming soon? 👀
I noticed that too, and I just noticed they uploaded GX OP1 textless this morning, too. Possible, since they’re almost done with the DM subs, right? Seems odd of them to be uploading the textless videos, but hey, I guess it’s something lol. Be nice if they uploaded some of those alternate versions we never got textless 🤔
(They’ve turned off comments tho, the cowards)
[EDIT: Been informed by @authoratmidnight and @chancellorxofxtrash that the comment thing is likely due to YouTube being dumb with its “for kids” setting due to COPPA. Come to think of it, I think I do remember noticing comments first being turned off on their videos around the time that happened…]
“A World Without Light – The Dark Synchro Frozen Fitzgerald!”/”A Web of Deceit (Part 1)″
Everybody listen!
Took long enough to finish up and polish (partly because of work and activism life actually picking up a bit), but here’s a brand-new “dub-uncut” episode! With my first few takes in episodes 23-26 newly revised, I was looking forward to working on 27 and starting fresh again, lol. In case this is the first you’re hearing about my mini-project here, let’s get you up to speed:
So, the official Spanish YGO channel on YouTube flubbed a few uploads of the 5D’s dub such that they ended up uploading a few episodes of the English dub instead of the Latin American dub (21-29)–but with none of 4Kids’s background music! Which meant that I could swoop in and re-insert the original Japanese soundtrack (which I did by matching each track to how it was looped in the episode), but I wanted to do more by also tweaking the dub itself so that not only was it matching the original footage, but the dialogue was more in line with the original dialogue timing-wise (since I couldn’t salvage much of what they changed). Hence, the “dubbed uncut” gimmick here. To this end, I’ve also used dialogue from Duel Links where applicable, or even borrowed audio from other episodes with the vocals isolated to lend to that effect.
Check out the masterpost of episodes I’ve done here!
So, this one was fun to do particularly because overall, save for the, er… butchering that happened on explaining the Dark Synchro mechanic (4Kids wut) and the rewrite of Carly’s interaction with her Editor-in-Chief (and making Carly a “blogger” lol), the dialogue was already more or less in line with the Japanese version, which meant that I was more or less just removing a lot of the fluff as I added back the OST. As I did in 22, 24, and 26, I added subs for the scenes where 4Kids rewrote things a bit too much for my taste (so, the scenes I mentioned above, but also the occasional line or a few), but of course these subs will be optional in the MKV I release on NAC for this. I also added back some SFX and tried to remove the dub’s replacement SFX in most cases, though I had to swap out the SFX as Speed Warrior was tuning with Junk Synchron since 4Kids had a tendency to add some new one over the original SFX and made it too loud to work with the Yusei chant I put there. And I translated the OP/ED credits in Last Train and CROSS GAME, revamping my singable lyrics a bit for Last Train while drafting new ones for CROSS GAME which I’ll post soon; you can see my Last Train translation in the second WIP video and CROSS GAME’s here. Full process breakdown below the cut.
Also, major thanks to yugidmx5 for providing A+ rips of the “The Day Begins/Tenpei” theme in the Carly/Angela scene, the “Vision of Tragedy” theme as Yusei and Ruka talk about the Satellite’s future, and the alternate “Dark Signers” tune which plays as we first see them and then again between the Dark Signer drones recruiting and Yusei chasing Dark-Signer!Dick down (before it transitions to the OST-released version once Yusei gets to the building under construction); I know that since these came out well, he’s working on better rips for some or most of the unreleased OST, so stay tuned there (I also drafted up a full version of the alternate DS theme, but had to get creative since they didn’t play all of it in this alternate style; will post soon). And thanks to Tiny Spider Productions, who provided the “shock” SFX playing as Carly sees Yusei’s arm actually glowing in her car, some inspo here/there for dialogue fixes, and provided CurtisH from CastingCallClub’s recording he did voicing a line from Tanner translating the original line about the four Signers they know which 4Kids cut short.
I hope folks enjoy! Just breezing through 28 often for lines to use here, I can tell it’s going to be a headache because they did throw in a lot more jankiness in the dialogue… So, fun. 🙃 Once I handle finalizing my subs for GX 56 (and possibly 57 due to how long this took), I’ll start drafting it out; stay tuned~
(And if you’re able to reblog for visibility, it’d be appreciated given Tumblr’s suckage with links 🙏🏽)
5D’s Dub-Uncut Episode 27 WIP #4: The Dark Signers Appear
(Don’t mind the extra effects, YouTube being YouTube and all they were needed to get past the Content ID match)
Been a bit eager to show this one off, haha. So, in the last WIP, we left off with Carly’s intro; here, I show off the near-final product of the scenes with the Dark Signers making their first appearance, along with Yusei and co discussing their birthmarks (including my attempt to fix the dub’s dumb mistake calling Yusei’s the “Head” mark, but since I didn’t have a clip of him saying “tail” handy, I combined a clip of him saying “T[ake]” with another one to give me the “ail” sound, along with tweaking Leo’s line after; if someone knows an episode in which dub!Yusei might have said “tail,” lemme know lol), and then possessed Dick showing up to duel Yusei.
GX 56 - Fixin’ to Take a Seat (WIP)
Have been getting ready to work on finalizing GX 56 as I get nearly done with 5D’s Dub-Uncut 27 (would’ve probably been done sooner but this has been a busy week lol), and this was something I thought I’d take a crack at; this scene near the end of the episode as Shou pops back up at Red after his Yellow promotion happens to have Judai, Manjoume, and Kenzan sitting–but not one of those long benches to sit on! Bit of a… questionable oversight from the animation staff (there were two other small fixes to make with lip-flaps earlier on, but oof), which I wanted to see if I could fix, and so far, it’s not looking bad. I just added a bench for Kenzan so far, taking inspiration from the bench the Reds on the right in the background are sitting on and using his legs as a perspective guide, and then masking Kenzan’s butt on top while adding a bit of shading (lemme know if the shading looks off lol). I tried to make the bench half-light and half-dark (third image) with the dark half visually under the table, but it kinda looked off to me compared to the all darker look which the background bench seemed to have, but let me know what you think!
I’ll be doing the same with Manjoume and then trying to get one under Judai and his legs there, but I think I’ll be putting one behind Shou instead of in front since you’d assume he jumped over it to get Kenzan’s plate of shrimp, lol.
Also, don’t mind Shou glitching out here; this is a stitched-together image of the panning shot, and the idea’s to re-pan the shot to get the new benches in position and then just mask them out so they’re all that’s layered over the video. Just an editing quirk, lol.
Stay tuned!
5D’s Dub-Uncut Episode 27 WIP #3 - A Foreboding/Carly on the Scene
New WIP video! Would’ve uploaded one sooner, but I was working on a footage fix for finalized!GX 56 (fixed the backwards store signs as Ryou’s walking in 57!). (Fourth upload now, and thought I’d just go back to the effect I used in my second WIP video… dangit YouTube)
Anywho, showing off the scene with Yusei and Ruka discussing the vision they saw, and then Carly’s interrupting Angela to ask Godwin a question to lead into her driving scene. First, major thanks again to yugidmx5 for the great-quality rip they were able to provide for the “Vision” theme playing in the former scene; I tweaked the dialogue a bit near the end to remove Yusei’s commercial-break-inducing monologue by looping footsteps and recycling an earlier gasp along with a “Hmm” sound he makes. For the first Carly/Angela scene, I was able to shorten Carly’s dialogue over her fortune card to match the JP lines a bit more by slightly slowing the relevant parts and using those, while I removed Goodwin’s “sheen/sunshine” line by getting “still” from episode 23 and keeping the line at “I’m afraid I didn’t see that.”
As Carly’s driving scene comes up, I had to shorten her line to remove “that means I’m onto something” (for recycling later) and keep it at “Goodwin dodged my question! Better not let it slip…”, then as she’s driving, the Editor’s last line to her was shortened a bit given it was fluffed up in the dub, while I let Carly’s line play on a different audio track so that as his line finished Carly’s line starts as she starts lip-flapping (unfortunately, with the limited audio, I couldn’t do away with the Editor’s junk lines about what interns are supposed to do). Then, as she sees Yusei’s arm glowing, I had to shorten her line a bit because the dub held it on Yusei to give her extra dialogue; I grabbed “wait” and “there it is” from somewhere, shortened her line about Goodwin to just “Goodwin tried to feed me that bit,” and borrowed “The whole world will know…” from later on (as it’ll go unused; thanks to Tiny Spider Productions for the inspiration with his take on a Dub-Uncut #27). Also, Veronica Taylor does make a great Carly, which is nice to hear with the original OST.
(BTW, don’t suppose anyone has that one SFX handy that plays when Carly sees Yusei’s birthmark? I’d like to have it to play in full instead of having it cut off the way it is now because of how I spliced the line, lol.)
Lemme know what you think! This should be how these scenes sound in the final product, which I’m still going over, but I’ll likely be able to wrap up by the end of the week; I’ll likely have another WIP or two coming!
5D’s Dub-Uncut Episode 27 WIP #2 - Enter Stutter-Stammer Carly
Wow, this new arc looks brilliantly flashy!
nah, it’s just me making sure YouTube doesn’t block, don’t mind it lol
Getting into episode 27 proper after the first WIP weeks ago, here’s another preview of what I’ve been working on! Work’s been gradually coming along on this; I’ve drafted the music and dialogue for much of the episode, so now I’m tweaking things and adding SFX where needed. I wanted to show off this clip, but wanted to also retranslate the Last Train OP and actually translate the ED, which I just finished up (I’d already translated Last Train for myself a while back, while I’d never done CROSS GAME, which also had me write up some singable translated lyrics for it that I’ll flesh out and post sometime).
Here, for Carly’s debut scene, first off: major thanks to yugidmx5; they provided a cleaner rip of the in-hindsight-poorly-named “Tenpei” theme for me to work with, along with some other help later in the episode. Dialogue-wise, I cut out some of Angela’s offscreen fluff dialogue by throwing in the Japanese audio as Carly got herself ready, then cut Carly’s “from one journalist to another” bit as she walks over after Angela shoves her and gets Yusei’s name wrong (which I’d have edited out, but not much to work with lol; I also edited Angela’s line a bit to remove her last name since, well, she never had one originally). Wish they kept Angela calling her “Stutter-Stammer Carly…” Then, I looped some of the crowd chanting “Yusei!” at the end to edit out Yusei’s unneeded internal monologue. And then, we get into the fully translated OP, which speaks for itself, lol.
Stay tuned for more WIPs!
My Old VS Revised Subs (GX 55) - 😏😏
