Question, has anyone ripped any SFX from ARC-V yet? Specifically the counter-goes-up/down sound, but if there’s more, I wouldn’t say no. Would be useful for this thing I’m doing!
Today in “How Did You Forget That?” and “Well, That Escalated Quickly”…
So I recorded the ARC-V Voice Meme posted by massuneko the other night because ping-pong, and it ended up being about 40+ minutes; did a bunch of editing to get rid of most of my stammering, then added music and clips because why not (I think it came out more like a mini-podcast haha i miss being on radio). I feel like I didn’t explain why I like Yuya that well, so here’s a post that puts it into better words! Enjoy!
(And now, with the spoilers announced for 100, there go my “return to Standard for a bit” hopes… Also, that trope I was thinking of was called “Soundtrack Dissonance” [though this example’s not listed there]. And I forgot to mention Yuri’s chasing Yuzu as another favorite moment, given how it establishes him a bit as a villain, or Yugo beating the Obelisk Force, or even the first Riding Duel in ARC-V [Yugo VS DC227], OR JACK’S ENTRANCE fail. I really do enjoy the series a lot, which is why it’s so hard to pick favorite moments or duels, lol [honorable mention also goes to the Yuya VS Reiji duel in 12/13, Gongenzaka VS Yaiba, Yuya VS Gongenzaka, and Yuya VS Sora I & II). If there’s something else that could be clarified, lemme know!)
Also, Australians are great. 😄)
The One With the Steakout–at Night!
There’s been a frequent case of Obelisk Blue students being forced into a duel with a mysterious man late at night, and–upon losing–having their rare cards stolen; Chronos appoints Judai to find the culprit. We meet Ohara–a huge Ra Yellow who doesn’t have much in the way of dueling skills–and his best friend Kohara, who seems to be skilled at dueling but is timid and has only lost his bouts; even when mocked by the Obelisk Blues, he can’t say a thing. That night, as Judai pursues the culprit, he comes across Ohara, but… Judai and Ohara then duel.
First off, if you haven’t seen the YGO GX Abridged version of this episode, please treat yourself! One of the best ones haha.
Now, this episode’s not too bad, and makes a hell of a lot more sense than the dubbed version (surprise surprise). Nice moment at the end with Judai and Kohara, too.
I also did a few minor-ish card consistency fixes to the episode–full list below the cut. Enjoy! I’ll work on 17 for the next week or two.
The Darkside of Dimensions - Full Movie Trailer (Subbed!) (Original)
A slight rushjob since I’m rushing off, but I’ll polish it later if I find I should, lol. Enjoy, and grab a seat on the HYPE TRAIN!
No, that usually falls to our stand-in Duel Composer, Masahiro Hikokubo (who was also wrote the 5D’s manga). As I’d guess, he’d generally write the duels with what the scriptwriter and/or series composer (or others involved that I dunno about) want to get out of it (like symbolism and whatnot), while also likely working out how to mix in Konami’s wants well. I’ll tag @ygoanimation again in case he knows anything he wants to add, but I think that’s about the gist of it.
Favorite deck in the show: Kind of a tie between Elemental Heroes and Yuya’s Entermates, but I also like Masumi’s Gem-Knights, Johan’s Gem Beasts, and Reiji’s D/D/Ds! I’ve been trying to get enough DP in Tag Force Special to build a D/D/D deck (or minimal one, since not all the cards are there), and it’s suffering getting multiple copies of some of the cards. May shoot for EMs…
Favorite generation: original (what arc?)/GX/5Ds/Zexal/Arc-V: In terms of the show, I’d say 5D’s is still a favorite (despite the shortcomings after the DS arc) because Riding Duels are fun to watch, but I’m really enjoying ARC-V so far (the music definitely helps that), and of course GX will always be a favorite. DM does get a shout-out, but now that I’ve been reading the manga, it’d get more points if it was a closer adaptation of it. I do enjoy it, though, and I’m looking forward to DSOD.
Merchandise you own: Hah, not a lot of it, I’m afraid! Aside from cards, which I’m sure I still have 1000+ of from high school, lol. I also do have my WC2007 and 08 games lying around, and GX Spirit Caller should be somewhere too. I’ve been meaning to buy that DA pin I saw around, though…
Thanks for the ask! :) (x)
Favorite villain: Hmm… Dartz in DM is a favorite because–unpopular opinion time!–I’ve always liked Season 4 and the whole thing with the Orichalcos. He also had a neat design to him. Also, Saiou in GX; I enjoyed writing his lines, lol.
Favorite dialogue line(s) in the manga or show: Ryou’s speech to Judai in their Graduation Match comes to mind. “In a way, being perfect means you won’t chase your limits… Judai Yuki, you have infinite potential.” Also, Shou’s flashbacks to Judai in 137 and following up with “Why? Why’s his face all I can think of?!” with the sad music in the background. :’(
Favorite episodes and/or duels: I hate this question because it’s always hard to choose haha. In DM, Yugi VS Jou and Yugi/Kaiba VS Dartz are favorites, as is episode 217 because of how pretty it is. GX: Ed and Judai VS Saiou, along with Judai VS Cobra. 5D’s: Yusei VS JACK in the Fortune Cup, Jack VS Carly, and Yusei VS Antinomy, though plot-twist aside, I also enjoyed Yusei VS Z-ONE. Can’t choose from ZeXal as I’ve yet to see 90% of it, and for ARC-V, I’ve got a bunch haha. In no particular order, Yuya VS Shuzou, Yuzu VS Masumi (both), Gonny VS Yaiba, episode 21, LDS Trio VS Shun, Shun VS Sora, Shun VS Dennis (FC), Yugo VS Sawatari, Yuzu/Gonny VS Halil and Olga… And a good few more. ARC-V’s been way too enjoyable, and I must’ve rewatched the pre-50 era about 4-5 times by now lol.
Favorite OP/End theme: Teardrop and The Sun have a special place in my heart, since S3 was where I started subbing GX. So does Warriors, since it was one of the first OP/ENs I discovered before that. Otherwise, I also hate this question because I really dig everything. ^^; ARC-V’s themes have also been on-point; I love Unleash (I also like 9mm Parabellum Bullet, so their guitarist being involved definitely helps), Burn!, Future Fighters, and Speaking, but everything’s good! Elsewhere, Last Train - A New Morning, Shuffle (really dig the newer version, too), Unstoppable Overflowing Feelings (Afureru Kanjou…), Overlap, EYE’S, -OZONE-, START… There really is a lot, lol.
Thanks for the ask!
Had some time this week, so I finalized my comparison for 5D’s 18! A bunch of dialogue edits in this one, as well as the first edit-Japanese-text-into-Latin-but-not-really edits. Happy reading!
The One With All the Rackets
Well, this one was an adventure… But not because of the episode itself, lol–all things considered, this episode’s not a bad one, save for Ayanokouji’s grand exit. And it’s also a fitting one for Valentine’s Day!
Judai ends up in a duel against Mitsuru Ayanokouji, a Third-Year Obelisk Blue student who’s enamored with Asuka and mistakes Judai and her for a couple.
This one also saw me working the most fixes into an episode since starting to look into it. If you’ve been following my subs for a while, you know I love consistency. Unfortunately, the animators didn’t seem to share that same love, at least so far. D: So, with help from @saveyuzu and @akameniseis, as well as @silivagalaxy teaching me how to card-edit in AfterEffects, I got to work. All together, there were 14 different fixes done, 4 being Burstlady fixes–because the poor girl can’t catch a break. On top of those, I also translated the hit counters that show up once Ayanokouji uses Deuce to screw the rules–a full list of all the fixes done lies below the cut. It was fun, though, aside from all the keyframing; “It was quite educational!”, as Halil in ARC-V would say!
I’ll just be going back to 14 for a quick bit to update the Mega Thunderball fix I added to the preview, and updating the script for the “Captain Cheery” line (inspired by “President Peppy” in the CR subs). I also dug up some things worth fixing in 1-2 earlier episodes that I’ll use my new skills on at some point. Then, it’s off to episode 16! I’d put the ETA at maybe early next week; I already partly did one fix there for 15’s preview, so hopefully that’s the only one. Enjoy, guys! And hopefully, you had a nice Valentine’s Day, if you celebrated it. :)
The One Where I Start Doing a Thing (WIP)
Just a little thing I’ve been wanting to do for a while; the ARC-V dub is at least decent and has some decent/great actors involved, but I’ve felt that the one thing hurting the dub the most is the change in music. That, and fluffy dialogue. and awful dialogue
So, to that end, I finally got around to tweaking a plugin in Cool Edit a bit and worked with the audio to get it sounding decent enough to be able to mess around and add the original score back, and here’s a preview! I started here since episode 10’s a personal favorite, and the dub was also surprisingly good for it. I made the dialogue match up a lot more with the Japanese script when possible, meaning some lines were shortened (like with Henrietta scolding Dipper) or muted (and with scoffs/whatnot, I might recycle them in spots). And because the isolator isn’t perfect, I’ll be adding back SFX to make it sound a bit more natural, along with tweaking the audio some more. Thankfully, the dub uses some more moments of silence where there originally was music, lol.
I’ll probably revise this part/the audio as I go along, but here’s this to look at. More of a side project (especially since I still do want to work some more on my 5D’s!DBZKai thing), but one I would like to work some more on. Enjoy!
(Check out my dub/sub comparison for episode 10 here!)
The One With the Psycho Kill–er, Shocker
A group of three students manage to summon the spirit of “Psycho Shocker,” who attempts to gather souls for his own resurrection as Duel Academia’s winter break is underway. One seeks Judai and Professor Daitokuji’s help, but…
Here it is! Sorry to keep you guys waiting, lol. This episode was good to revisit; it’s Judai’s first “experience” with a Game of Darkness, and it also happens at another spot that becomes important in Season 3.
Did a few edits in this episode–listed below the cut chronologically–some through the awesome Jedi Edit Tricks™ of the people mentioned. Enjoy, guys; I’ll begin work on 15 over the next few days!
Heyo!
So, GX episode 14 is pretty much done at this point; I just wanted some help with one edit to fix an animation error, if anyone graphic-editing-savvy’s up to it?
The animators goofed with their consistency drawing Burstlady, and @se-to-oh did whip up a fix for the first frame it happens in.

The mission, should someone choose to accept it, would be to add the missing strap on her arm/shoulder in this and the other two frames (here), with her edit as a guide. Redrawing isn’t my resident editor’s forte, unfortunately, so I was hoping someone would be able to give it a shot? You’ll of course be thanked for it in the episode’s ending credits. :)
Lemme know if you can!
This is an interview with Katsumi Ono and Shinpei Takagi, ARC-V’s (and 5D’s’) Director and Yugo’s Japanese voice-actor respectively, posted over on NAC. Translated it while bored at work, and here are the results, copied over from there! There were some scans of articles about characters like Reiji and young Rin and Yugo, which I’ll also tackle.
