So it was GX’s 10th Anniversary this week (10/6), and I figured I should finally getting around to reuploading this AMV I made ages ago as a tribute to GX. The song’s a self-cover of “Shuffle” (DM OP 2) by Okui Masami, and I made this during my “make a GX AMV out of DM songs” phase way back (a project I still want to get back to lol; I’m up to Rakuen!). Of course, a lot’s changed since then; I have better-quality raws and working knowledge of Vegas, so as a result, expect this thing to get remade in the near future with more stuff I couldn’t throw in because I didn’t have the episodes at the time (like Fubuki VS Fujiwara or Kenzan meeting Judai, etc). Enjoy, folks!
Also, in other GX stuff, in case you haven’t seen it, I started up a petition to convince Marvelous Entertainment (the guys who released GX’s measly two soundtracks) to release another Sound Duel to cover GX’s unreleased music, as well as one to cover 5D’s’ missing stuff. We’re only up to 40 sigs, though, so if you haven’t signed it, and you love GX and 5D’s and the music that made them as much as we all do, please do so here if you can! The goal’s to eventually forward it to them, and see if we can get this done (since fan outcry was one of the forces that got ZeXal a Sound Duel 5), so any boost would help (here’s the Tumblr post for it if you’re wanting to signal boost it).
4/18/2000 - 9/29/2004
“This isn’t a story about a great Pharaoh. Everyone has their own story. And… my story has just begun.”
Ten years ago, Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters ended its run in Japan back in 2004. This is rather significant as even though the story of Yugi and his friends has ended, it opened up the door for the adventures of Judai, Yusei, Yuma, and Yuya and their group of irreplaceable comrades. Because of Duel Monsters and its success, we wouldn’t all be here today in this close-knit community. Yu-Gi-Oh really has brightened up my day with its dynamic storylines and its message of friendship and never giving up. So thank you, Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters—without you, we wouldn’t have the successor series. Even though ten years have passed, you are still loved and you will never be forgotten no matter how many series follow after. You are what started this journey and we will never forget that… Thank you once more from the bottom of my heart.

I’ve finally gotten this petition online! I’ll probably touch it up at some point (and if anyone wants me to add anything, let me know!), but there it is, and it’d be great if this got spread around like wildfire. I’ll also try to plug this to Japanese fans by making a video on my Nicovideo account, but hey, let’s get ourselves a GX Sound Duel 3 and/or 5D’s Sound Duel 4! Or at least some kind of statement, because skipping 40+ awesome songs in GX and 20+ in 5D’s for no reason really makes no sense. Yu-Gi-Oh! series always have great soundtracks, and it’d be nice to appreciate both GX’s and 5D’s’ in full.
EDIT (10/13): Up to 40 signatures! Thanks to anyone who signed, and if you haven’t, please help out if you can! WE CAN WIN, WE FEEL GREAT, WE. CAN. DO. THIS. UGH.
Is anyone familiar with petition sites and whatnot? I really do want to try and get this “release GX’s unreleased music” petition going, and it’d be good to try it on a more well-known site (unless they don’t matter as long as the petition gets forwarded to the company eventually, probably). I’ll have to take a crack at trying to word it well too haha.
Okay, does anyone want to help me get a petition going to get Marvelous Entertainment over in Japan to release another Sound Duel for GX? Because as much as I like working on these rips, these tracks that are impossible to keep with the original instruments would sound disappointing (I’m up to my favorite part of “A Duel Frenzy/An All-Out Duel”–the chill downtempo part of it–and it’s hard as hell to get much of it clean from its limited 15 uses in the show, and it sounds awkward without that one instrument coming in toward the middle in the vocal-removed version [hear it in action here]).
And hey, it worked for ZeXal fans: they’ve got a Sound Duel 5 coming in November thanks to a lot of fan outcry…
放送終了後も未収録音源のCD化を望むお声を多数頂きましたことを受け、今回の発売が決定致しました。
*quick translation by me*
“Many of you voiced your wishes for CDs of the soundtracks that went unreleased even after [ZeXal]’s broadcast concluded, and that led us to this next release.”
…so if anything, it can only help! GX’s 10th Anniversary is also coming up soon, so there’s our special occasion!
Or worst-case scenario, someone has some audio-editing knowhow to tell me how to remove the vocals but keep those instruments (probably something involving frequencies if I had to guess), or someone can maybe help recreate the instruments or something idk
Yutaka Minobe - A Touching Moment
And here’s the last short track for this release! This thing only played twice in the series (in a flashback with Judai/Hayato in 9 and as Shou leaves Red in 56), so it’s definitely the least-used unreleased track, and interestingly enough, it’s also tied with a piece I’m calling “Resolution” (plays only when Chronos looks at all the grad pictures in 167, and when Shou’s by Judai’s bed in 109; that’ll be done after I get these tracks done). As a result, the beginning lead-in was hard to get intact, so I had to remove the vocals for it. Then the sample from ep.9 gets most of the song, and it would’ve gotten it all if it hadn’t been for Kuzuo’s “HMM…” towards the end; that’s where I switched to the ending bit from 56 to cover it up, keeping the footsteps for a second or two, and then going back to the 9 sample for the end. Because it’s not an ideal fade-out there (with birds chirping near the end and all), I cut it short just before the chirps and crossfaded with silence, and then added some reverb in Cool Edit to give it a fade-out.
Enjoy! I’ll be cracking my knuckles for the first longer theme, “A Duel Frenzy” (aka Tanya’s Theme) next.
Yutaka Minobe - Suspenseful Encounter
Rip #6 all done! Here’s Suspenseful Encounter (working title, since I feel it could use a better name but I have no ideas lol), played about 25-26 times in the series, putting it up there with A Close Call. This track wasn’t too hard to work with, minus the “why can’t I get this ONE second clearly” thing. The beginning comes from 29 after some static-removal, and then most of the track is a re-reverb’d vocal-removed version of the sample from 103 and then 93–the latter of which gives us the fade back in towards the end. I was debating whether or not that was either a new part or part of the opening fade, but the fade goes on to keep fading in as the new piano part kicks in, so I kept it.
Enjoy; one more short track left!
Yutaka Minobe - Standby
Here’s rip #4, “Standby,” which is probably the least-played unreleased track in the series (at seven times, and usually before a duel), second only to “Amnael’s Theme” (four times). Unfortunately, even 7 uses weren’t enough to get the theme as originally heard, and while I resorted to just vocal-ripping the sample from 106, I did want to intersperse parts of the un-ripped samples to restore that one “strummy” instrument that comes in every few seconds; but doing that and going back to the ripped sample seemed a bit jarring. 106’s sample doesn’t give a clear fade at the very end because of the transition to the Cobra scene and the background noise but it was the only one that I could use, so once I vocal-removed it, I had it crossfade with a few seconds of silence, and then added some reverb in Cool Edit to give it a fade.
Enjoy! Two more short tracks to work on, and then it’s on to the longer ones.
Yutaka Minobe - Contemplation
Here’s rip #3, pretty much done: Contemplation! A nice piece that played about 21 times in GX, first at the start of 46, and finally in 179 as Yugi and Judai prepare to duel. Left in only 2 pieces of SFX (that footstep and Judai sighing), thanks to its use in 47 getting me the beginning (before Ojama Yellow has to–pardon the pun–butt in and cut it off) and its use in 164 (where Judai sighing comes from) getting me most of the end. Enjoy!
(EDIT: Fixed up the track to get rid of those bits of SFX by using samples from 78 and 159 [after restoring it to its original B note, since it was higher-pitched].)
Another one fresh off the presses! Presenting “A Sprung Trap”, first played at the start of episode 28, last played in 149 (when Amon attacks Yubel!Johan); all together, it played about 31 times in GX. Had to leave in a grunt or two to keep it flowing (that mid part was hard to get intact), and I removed the vocals from 60’s sample (when Judai can’t see his cards) to get us that clear end. Enjoy!
Also, as I post these on my Soundcloud, I’ll have downloads enabled for the week I post them, and then disabled after, since I want to release these all together. :P
(EDIT: Updated the track to get rid of what was left of the title card music in the beginning, and inserted some of the vocal-removed track [with some restored reverb] to replace the parts with said grunts)
Yutaka Minobe - A Close Call
Makin’ some headway on things!
So I finished my little unreleased-BGM spreadsheet and nabbed a few samples venomas6 hadn’t already sent me for this song, and got to work in Vegas today trying to snip the best parts I could use to get it with as little SFX as possible (rather than just vocal-remove and lose some of the instruments). Thankfully, its clips in 51 and 143 helped with the ending (51 in particular chipped in for the very end), 93 for the beginning, and the other clips here and there. This’ll probably be the final version I’ll use, having bumped up/lowered the volume here and there to make it sound more even, though it sucks that I can’t get those footsteps out of there. D:
[About the “Sound Duel 1.5” thing, that’s how I’ll eventually be releasing these rips (EDIT: I said this thinking Tumblr would show the album title lol). Originally, I was going to make that and a 1.75 for the Season 3+ stuff, but making it a 2-disc thing would probably work better lol. I’m also planning to include a bunch of the extended tracks I’ve made for stuff that’s been released, and some I’ll whip up for more of them and for these unreleased tunes. Now, I do want to start working on GX Season 1 soon, so once things get a bit more stable IRL, I may do a tune or two in between each episode; we’ll see how it goes.]
This one played 24 times throughout GX (and yet none of them gave me a solid way to get the first few seconds completely dialogue-free lol). One of my favorites, too. Enjoy!
Wanted to share this WIP manga panel redraw I’ve been working on during my commutes to/from downtown this past week!
Chose to draw Season-4!Judai here instead since I’ve drawn his hair a lot more, and I just started Misawa tonight lol. Also, I love drawing the Duel Disks haha. I’ll probably touch Judai up some more, though, and fix his right leg a bit.
The Biggest Dreamer - A GX MAD
So, I was surfing through some old Vegas projects when I saw this. I think I started it for a fandub I wanted to do, but I picked it back up over the last few days out of boredom and finished it (also DAMN is this song [and Tamers in general, mind you] good). And here’s the result! My first time really working with the chroma keyer effect, as seen with those shots of the logos and Kenzan/co’s hands from Teardrop and The Sun respectively, and I do like how that came out! Also made those PIPs of Kenzan and Manjoume’s clips so they wouldn’t stick out with just one clip each lol. And then I figured I’d add the JP credits, which wasn’t too hard to do since I’d just done Endless Dream’s credits in Japanese, and timed them as close to the original Tamers opening as I could, given the extra stuff that GX opening credits get. All in all, fun to work on.
Hope you guys enjoy it! If this gets a lot of notes, I’ll post a textless version over on NAC haha.
so i tried to gif a thing
